RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks Bob,
Already started making a new center section. I'm laminating 1/16 balsa with two outer sheets of 1/32 ply for strength. Also using 4 hinge points instead of three. I won't use the new laminated piece for the whole center section, but will taper it down to half-way down the shaped LE.

Gents,
I happy to report we put a maiden flight on my TF corsair tonight. Everytihng went really well. Plane flew great. Need to make some minor post maiden adjustments but no big deal. All in all I'm really happy.
Plane weighed in at 28lbs5ozs dry.
CG was set right on the mark per the plans.
I forgot to bring the camera to the field tonight so I'll get some pics this weekend.
I'm excited to get some flying time in now.

I don't venture away from home mutch as I have arteritus in my hands, which ltmits my flying ability flights are normaly under 6 min and most of the time cramps in the thumbs make landings a hazard so I have a buddy with me that I can hand off the xmitter to when it it gets to bad

Todd, glad to hear your maiden was a success. Please accept my apology for not getting back to you on the question you pm me about a few weeks ago. I just now realize I never did answer you. Good to know the recommended CG on the plan worked for you also.

Gary, No worries. I'm just really glad it all turned out well.
Thanks all for the nice responses and all the help in the thread everyone.
If you're local (WI, IA, MN, ILL, IND) or wherever you are from you may wnat to stop by FonDuLac for the Midwest Warbirds and Classics event August 14-16. It's an awesome event and there are over 100 pre-registered pilots, some international. It's a really good time!

I have been wondering how to glue the center sections LE onto the ribs and the dowel plate. I don't like the idea of only gluing the four R-1 & 2 ribs and ley it dry. If I do that how do I glue the dowel plate in place. It is slightly uneven and I was going to use triangular stock on th outside of each side and then glue and clamp it so the slight uneveness is corrected. I was planning on doing it last after everything else is glued so it doesn't twist the wing. Right now with it set in the center of the ribs each side is the same height from the table and it indicates it's level at the dowel plate. What would you do in my situation?
Please help,
Barry

If I understand your question, you have glued ribbs 1 & 2 each side and they are dry. now to glue the L/E to the dowel plate and the remaining ribbs, hear is one of the places I use good old tite-bond (water proff) I just flexed the L/E enough to get a piece of 3/32 ply in between smeard in the glue and clamped it, once this is dry just glue the ribbs (Don't try to do to much at a time hear) or just follow the book page 15 steps 13 thru 21

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hey everyone, I am in the last stages of completing my Corsair, and I just want to ask a few questions just give me some last minute ideas.
1. What is the best way to position a Futaba Faast reciever in order to have the best antenna placement? I am using Faast receivers in my heli's, but this is my first time in a big bird like this, so I do not want to take any chances with signal interference or problems.
2. I am using a Zenoah G-62. What oil and mixture you using for the fuel?
3. From experience, what throws are you using for the elev, ail, rudder, and how much flap throw for landing?
Simple questions, but I sometimes second guess myself when I have put in several hours of work trying to complete a project, I just like to get second opinions to make sure I haven't forgotten something.
Thanks!
Duane

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Duane, Mine has not flown yet, but here are some answers from my experience:
For mounting the 2.4 rx, I will either put it behind the pilot's head rest or where the plans show the air tank ( I moved mine to behind the wing mounting). In either case I'll use the fixture I made out of white plastic tubing to hold the antenna at 90 degrees to each other. I don't want them blocked by the engine.
For my two strokes I start them on Pennzoil for Aircooled Engines (now "Multipurpose Outdoor for Aircooled"), at 32:1, for a gallon and then go to 40:1. After a five or so gallons I'll switch to a semi-synthetic (Husqvarna HP is what I'm using but any good oil will do there is always a lively debate in the gas engine forum but too many folks like Pennzoil at 32:1 for it not to be good) at 50:1.
For the throws I'm going to go for about an inch and a half up and down on the elevator with about 50 % Expo (high rate) and then low rate will be about 3/4". The ailerons I've maxed my throw at about 1.25" up and down. Rudder as much as I can get. Flaps: Mine are between 40 and 50 degrees at full deflection.
I'll know more after my maiden but I feel sure that these throws will be in the ballpark.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I know you guys gotta be tired of me posting pics of bird. So how about this !!!!!!! How about a pic of your Corsair and you with it. I ve been on this thread for at least 18 months and only have two or three faces to go with all of that good info we exchange. I met Twistawrecka a few months ago, sold DaddySam an aerobat 6 or 7 years ago and Frisconick and I are in the same club. So here goes for a starter, a pic of my ugly mug with the Grey Corsair. Lets see some faces to go with all of those post.
And for any of you guys that are worried about your Corsair tipping the scales a little to hard, Mine is 31 lbs and still handles awesome even in 100 + heat.
