I had the same question - what is a good first 80+ inch war bird?

Peter,

The top Flite Giant Scale Republic P-47 Thunderbolt would be a good giant scale plane to start with (84" wingspan). It's got a good wing on it and the landing gear are spaced far apart for stable ground handling.. I hear that they are very stable in flight. Good luck, Greg

Default hmmm

I hear the Hanger9 P51 mustang just rocks. And I have a PICA Focke Wulf 190D-9, 90 size.. very sweet airplane indeed. Good luck.....

for a first warbird i would recommend the great planes p51. its a sport version of the p51 and has a real easy to fly design- assuming you build it straight of course. the hangar 9 is ok too if you want to try an arf instead of a kit. but i would replace the retracts that come with the hangar 9 with spring air retracts as the hangar 9 are kind of wimpy.

for a second/more scale warbird i would do either the top flite p47 or the top flite fw190d9 (both 60 size). i have the top flite p47, the pica fw190d9, and the top flite p51 60 size planes, and they all fly fine, but the p47 and the fw190 are a little easier to fly for a first warbird. the mustang is a bit more scale and takes a little more care when flying, but its a great mustang. the pica fw190 is a great flyer- it just takes some rework at the front end as it was designed with engine mounting rails instead of a flat firewall mount, so i would redo this to mount the engione more easily.

Default 1 st warbird......

PETER.....Like Greg said ...I also like the Giant T/F ....P-47.....Has a wide landing gear for stable T/O's and landings....Nice long fuselage for good ground handling and pitch stability in flight....Is a better first choice than a P-51....once your comfortable flying your first warbird(Note: Get someone to help you with your first flights until you feel comfortable)....then you can move to a P-51 or something else...what makes the P-51 alittle more difficult is its more pitch sensative and gear is "short coupled" making ground handling more sensative as well....Good Luck....Bill...

I would go with the TF P47, a very forgiving, fine flying airframe.
