Default Paint question

Hi all,

I am building a GS Topflite P51 ARF. I cut out the wheel wells in the wing and ironed down about 3/8" of covering into the plastic wheel well inserts. Now I want to paint the wheel well interior green. Can I safely paint the plastic and ironed down covering without having a long term problem like the paint coming off in flakes or the covering coming away from the plastic? Or is there another technique to doing this?

BTW, the paint is acrylic paint. Is that OK?

TIA,
Jim

don't think acrylic is fuel proof. will need a clear top coat that is.

Thanks voyager. Is there some other paint I should be using for this? And does anyone know what the exact color is called for the interior surfaces of a WWII fighter?

Most likely the color would be green zinc-chromate. I have the color available in small 1/4 pint sizes, and it is FUEL PROOF, as is all of WarbirdColors. You can find it on the USA page of http://www.warbirdcolors.com Click on the stars & bars emblem on the main page to get to the USA page, then follow the "color palete (purchase)" menu option to display or purchase from the palete.

Thanks warbirdcolors. But I can't seem to figure out the navigation on the home page. Am I missing something? Will this paint be okay for the plastic wheel wells (ie: won't flake off)?

Thanks,
Jim

Simply click on the stars and bars at the middle top of the main page, which will take you to the next page that has nine links in the left pane. The top link (in yellow) is the "Color Pallet (Purchase) link. Move your cursor over it to reveal two more links: "Display Color Palet" and "Purchase from Color Palet". You can click on either one. I agree about page navigation being not too straight forward.

Actually, the link to warbirdcolors.com took me to the website for Roddan paints. Thats why I couldn't find the stars and bars!

Oh, there is a misplaced period in the link provided in post #4 above. Try this: [link]http://www.warbirdcolors.com/[/link]

You can also try the Poly Tone Avacado Green. Zinc Chromate unfortunately is no longer available (EPA and all) so we have to punt. try the website http://www.stits.com or email [email protected].

Green Zinc Chromate is widely available in hobby shops. Testors makes that color in both acrylics and enamels for plastic models. You can always clear coat it to make it fuel proof.

Oops. I didn't mean the color wasn't available. I meant "Zinc Chromate" the orginal protective coating is no longer available. It worked great for years as a corosion preventative then the EPA decided it had too many VOCs to apply safely. Sorry for the confusion.
