Default "GUY BORDELON F4U-5N"{1/4 scale, XXL Corsair Kit}.

Hi All,

I'm just about to start our new XXL Corsair build thread ,but I need your help!!!!!!!!

I have been trying to get as much info and pics of Guy Bordelon's F4U-5N Corsair,it is proving very hard to get good quality photos of the art work on this ship,so your help is needed.

If any of you have good pics of this great corsair could you please post them up,it would be very much appreciated.

Here is a pic of the Corsair I'm after, and one of the XXL out of the "Big Box"

Cheers Graham

Hi Graham ,I can Help you with this.Did a fair amount of research on these Planes, including Guy Bordelon's F4U-5N . Jason has put up a few pics, that I also have ,of The ACE and his plane. There`s a Thread that I have going, in the forum here somewhere.Somwhere near the last few pages I had started to put F4U-5 Info, including the F4U-5P,N, & NL versions.I have Instrument Diagrams, and cockpit layouts illustrated there..I don`t know if you are Making A Cockpit or not ,but there was a lot of variations ,and production changes for this Bird..The full scale Bird ,That Jason uploaded above is nice, but lots of things, not quite right ,for a Clone of BU# 124453..The Cartoon you have in your post is wrong in that Annie Mo is not on the left side, among other things ..Just the Right hand side had her, hand painted on the Cowl..I have some Documents that Show all the correct placement of the Navy markings , Squad Markings,etc..Panel lines are real accurate as well..The second antena on the Spine, was not used on this subject either ,you can see that in one of Jasons Photos..In Jasons Pics ,he has a couple of a small scale plastic model,,There is a problem with the color on the Radar on the right wing The cover was also a powder Blue like all the rest of the Markings,,I have Documentation for that as well, in the way of a color photo !! The wheels are supposed, to be The Fuselage color too.. Graham what Scale is this plane ,you are making ?? If you can give me a couple of Days I will look for all this info for you.My orginization is ,,well ,,NOT!!! I think I have good images of the important markings too..Only thing is ,I will post it all in the Corsair Buffs Thread ..ok?.I think I have patterns, for the Exhaust flame shields too, if you need them..I am going to assume that you want to model this plane in ACE trim ,and, Prior to the US Army Pilot doing his thing, to the plane by "Adjusting" all the Sheetmetal on this plane, all at the same time.I have a few photos of the Ruins somewhere too .You can Model the plane like that as well !! You still have to put all the Markings, in the Right places ,and then when you`re finished, just give it a good ,Ol Stomping..LOL PM me, if you don`t see anything posted from me, in the Early New Year..Sometimes I need a nudge. Dave

Hi Jason & Dave

Thank you ever so much with your help on the XXL.

Jason, thanks for the pics of the man him self,I will use those when I come to make the full bodied pilot,Got to get the helmet right as with the rest of the gear.

Dave, your valuable documentation will be ever so helpful as I want to get it as accurate as possible.
This bird I'm building for myself at last, so I want to go to town on her and will include all the gizmo's,she will also be our flag ship for Tiger, so I have to get her ready for the new season and hopefully take her into some competitions.

The XXL is made by my good friend Willi in Germany and are only made to Order.
The span is 120" so she is true 1/4 scale.
All I have done to her so far is mount the retracts and the 7" wheels!!!!so as you can see by the pics she comes very complete but the downside is ,she's a big old lump to ship.

Cheers Graham.

She will be a real Beauty, Graham !! I really do not want to be picky on your Model ,but If you are after accuracy ,I see 1 thing that Jumps out of the nice picture you posted, and maybe you are not Aware of this..I am thinking that your friend has designed the model on the F4U-1A ,thru, F4U-1D Platform.. The F4U-5 variations were a slightly Longer in the Fuselage from the Wing Forward, and The Exhaust were moved in to 4 exit locations. The upper Exhaust exits were similar to an F4U-4 but they were slightly Higher on the -5 series. The F4U-4 was the same overall length as previous Corsairs..With changes Mainly at the front of the Fuse..The F4u-5 has, at 4 & 8 O`clock positions, on the triangular egg shaped Cowl, induction (cheek) airscoops..It would not be very difficult for your friend to replicate these things,he could offer several Variations ,which would be nice options for a Customer

Graham Would you Give us all, a bit of a Review about your Friends Kit,is it all Built-up or Glass Etc..does he have a website,etc..??

When I have a chance I will post everythinng I have all at once( hopefully) on Bu No# 124453 all in one Posting..I`ll Pm.You where to find it..Yes Also the Pilots Gear is Completely different from anything Worn by the operator in WWII,,Jasons Pictures Proves it..The Korean War Era is what has my biggest Intrest Also. I am intrested in what you are doing so Maybe you can give us some more Photos,I`ll be watching when I can...Have a Happy New Year in 2007

Hi Dave & di n dave,

I hope you all had a good Christmas,

Dave, yes you are right,Willi has made the XXL as a mark 1-A ,and I'm aware of all the alterations I have to do to get her looking like a 5-N,the first one being the length of the noze,I'm still working out how much I have to extend it,Dave maybe you could help me on this as there seems to be alot of conflicting arguments on the size differences.
I will also have to chop the cowl about and add the two side intakes, and then cut off the spiller flaps and put them in the right position.

One of the other main differences on the 5-N is the canopy, this has to be higher and blown on the sides as well as having a flat screen,so I will do a new mold//form for that.
I'm now wishing I had opted for the 1-A. I do like a chalange.

Dave ,regrding this kit form Willi,he only makes them to order, and takes about 2-3 months once your order has be placed.

With thanks to Jasonp51d [The Webmaster]we have now got all the details up on the Tiger site,Willi himself has no site.

The XXL kit is true 1/4 scale with a span of 120",and is fully composite including all the separate flap, aileron, rudder and elevaitor sections.
Suits engines between 120-150cc or as it was designed for ,the Moki 215-250 Radial.

Yes Dave,I will be puting my 215 in her along with the Micro Cannons

Cheers Graham.

Hi Graham ..I can help you with your Questions ..The photos you`ve got up above, are of The Restoration ,"Annie Mo" Clone..I`ll be setting you up ,with pictures of the Actual "Annie Mo".. I started to put the Diagrams for ,Markings placement in the "Corsair Buffs" Thread..Look at the Last page there ..I`m a little Slow, and disorganized, so please Bare with me..Graham, you should turn this Thread into the Build/Modification thread ..You`ll have lots of, Lookers, Here..Me included..I`ll get measurments together for you too..They are from the original Navys` Pilot manual..Pretty hard to Debate that, I would think...I have lots of F4U-5 Diagrams of Various parts, of these Planes, so go have a look over there..I think they are mostly in the last few Pages..Dave

Hi All,

I know it's been a while, but I have been working on the Cowl, and exhaust cut outs for the 5N.

I have also been in touch with Jim Nicosia who has one of the first XXL in the US,he put me onto this great bit of kit from Darrell,my unit should be through soon, can't wait.

I'm hoping Jim comes on here and gives his opinion on the XXL.

Here are some pics of the cowl and tail retract.

Cheers Graham.

Hi All,

Just got my tail wheel retract from Darrell,I have not stopped playing with it,it's the bizz.

Here are some shots of the XXL up on her "3" pins for the first time,I have also made the arrestor hook for it and I was lucky in finding a good match for the wheel,it looks about right for the carrier style,it's also ball bearing run.

I will get some more pics of the unit as I have made it removable,so the two rams and servo is attached to the unit for ease of maintenance.

Cheers Graham.

Hi Speedaholic,

Yes you can get them bare, all the paint is done in the mould,a silver one would be nice,The guys over in Germany are just flying them as they get them, but if you are like me,they should be all rubbed back and then etch primed ready for paint.

Ok, for all you guys that are interested ,the price on just the Kit is $3400.00.

Cheers Graham.

Hi Speedaholic,

Sorry for the slow reply,I have just started another paint job, this is for Ali's Airworld 190, I will start a new thread on this.

I have been chatting With Ali on the shipping, and you are looking at about £ 500.00!!!! as this would be a rather large crate.

Hi ,Timothy T,

Have you any more info o Guy's plane, and your Dad's plane, this would be great if you have any more pics.

Cheers Graham.
