In response to your question, I am using CJ P-51 gear designed for the TF P-51 kit with four inch Robart scale warbird tires. With this set-up the inner gear doors will not be in the scale location. The distance from the wing centerline to the bottom of the inner gear is about one inch. If you move the gear mounting blocks inward then the pivot point for the gear strut will be in an incorrect location. When down, the gear leg should be outboard of the step on the leading edge of the wing. I've attached the pictures you asked for. One of the reasons I haven't glassed the wing yet is I'm still trying to decide how I will do the inner gear doors.
Thanks for posting pics of your plane. I'd like to hear more about how the plane flew with your engine. Also, if you have pictures of the cooling holes you had to cut in the bottom of the cowl I'd like to see those too, so post some if you can.

The cockpit panels have been done for months but I didn't get around to installing them until yesterday. I'm actually glad I procrastinated because the panels started to distort quite a bit around thier edges. I medium CA'd the panels to 1/16 balsa sheeting and now there are no problems. Some five-minute epoxy and CA and the panels are now permanent.
I made a cockpit floor out of 1/16 balsa with basswood stringers for strength and to keep the balsa from warping when I glassed the upper surface. I'll add the metal rudder kickplates later.

The seem from the fuselage mold was slightly noticable along the top of the cowling so I put some filler in it and primed it. Some light sanding later and it should be unnoticable after the FM goes on.
Also, I finished the seat armor and made a bracket for the seat out of balsa planks and a piece of ply. The seat will be removable with two bolts so it will be easier to strap the pilot in and out, so I made the bottom out of ply for strength.
All the extra crap on my workbench means my son has been building his planes and painting them; you can see the red and blue planes and all his mess all over my bench...I wouldn't have it any other way.

I like the cockpit,
I didnt have that option with my P-51 lol
I bought mine second hand and the canopy was
already glued on so I have left it, but If I were to order
another canopy I would like to do what you have done
there ... its nice looking.

Back on page three, post 65 I posted pictures of the cockpit kit. I got it from the same guy who sells FliteMetal. Its a basic kit and wasn't too expensive. I might still have the link to the website I ordered it from.

I made another part of the cockpit tonight. I looked at several pictures of the cockpit floor of a real P-51 and decided I had to make the metal track that goes down the center of the cockpit floor from the seat to the control panel.
I made a pattern out of paper, transferred it to a sheet of metal, cut it out then folded up the sides to form a lip. A little primer and paint, then light scuffing and it ought to do the trick.

I found this picture during a search of the threads for "Gear Doors." Obviously this is a P-47, but the builder here used a servo with a short linkage to actuate the door.

I'm not going to be worrying about the wing or gear doors for a little while. Instead of getting landing gear extensions you can probably talk directly to the guys at CJ and get them to make you slightly longer gear legs.
An Australian named Dave (goes by Ticketec on RCU) built a nice P-51 and came up with a good way to use a single servo to actuate his gear doors. He said it was a little bit of a pain to do and mentioned if he knew how hard it was going to be he'd probably have gone with an air system for the doors. I don't know what I'll use yet. Below are some pictures of Dave's method.

Thats a well known issue to P-51 builders. The picture I posted was a trial fit of the gear and Dave swapped them around after (see post 5 in http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_62...tm.htm#6269442 ). Minor issue, but some kits' wings are too narrow for the gear to fit the correct way, so they have to be reversed to get it all to go inside the wing.
If you want complete scale its probably better to start with a more expensive kit than the CMP one....you'll never be satisfied. I used that particular picture because it showed the connections to the gear doors well.

your right some Wings are not thick enough.
so why spend the time to get alot of other things
correct..and spend all that time when some things
are not correct... so there we have the FUN SCALE CLASS.
I have so many planes that fit into that catagory.
and honestly I have alot a fun building and flying those
planes.
When I bought my P-51 it was second hand. the nose had a
WHOLE in the top the guy was going to put a Gas motor in it.
so I had some body work to do.
one of the reasons that I bought it so cheap too lol..

My cowl is cut out for the SAITO 150 GK
not much was taken off.. only the area that was needed....
then on the side I copied the scale look.
in order to get the same size holes I used a Dremel tool bit. that size.

Okay, just inspecting my Mustang this afternoon. I'll strip off the covering on the wing and tail feathers and then clean up the building table. Now to only find time to work on my birds. I'll try late at night!!!!
Retracts - I know Oosiksmith is using CJ's and I have a set of CJ's that I had them put together for another kit, but didn't end up using, so I thought I might be able to contact them and see if I could get a credit toward the purchase of a new set! However, I think that will be a while off, as I will be making the gear legs longer and using a 4" wheels, so that actual dimension has still be determined!
This is nice looking Mustang and with some modifications, just like Oosiksmith, I can finally have my Mustang! I think if there was any real warbird, I could actually fly, it would have to be a Mustang! Unfortunately with the price of AV Gas, you'd have to be independently wealthy just put the gas tanks, let alone own one outright!

Tinkered with the cockpit a little more. Added the restraints to the seat, floor kick-plates, and the joystick. Like the rest of the cockpit, most of the detail parts are made from bit and pieces I have laying around my workbench.

With the extra weight I want to make sure I use a strong enough engine. I think this plane was designed around a YS 1.40, but with the mods I went to my LHS today and looked at the Saito 150 and 180. Impressive engines and they slid right in to the plane easily. Theres no question about Saito reliability or power, but glow fuel costs vs. gas made me check out the Evo 26GT. It also looks like it would go right in without too many major mods to the plane.
Will the Evo 26GT or the 26GX be enough engine to fly my plane with the mods I've done? Any help before I make an engine decision would be great.

Every one but me picked up the gear legs are the wrong way around when i took the pic's!!! your right, i was fixed straight after the pic's were taken..
As for the door actuation. i have an UP2 valve here on my bench for my Pica Mustang, but i am still tempted to use in the TF 'stang. the main reason is the robarts i have installed in that model sag a whole heap. so the gear door servo is working hard to try and keep the doors closed in flight. even though i set it up so that the doors in full up position centers the servo and so reduces the load, there is still a fair bit of load on it. the Jomar gear door sequencer is also a pain to setup but works fine once done.
So the short version of the story is, if your mains work fine and your gear doors sit comfortably in the up position then one servo is fine. if you mains sag, stear clear and go with air. I hope this info is helpful for you.

I built the radio bay this weekend. First, I built two balsa boxes and glassed them. Getting the right size was tricky...I couldn't find any good pictures of the radio bay on the internet. I added detail parts from plastic and metal, then primed, painted, and dry-brushed them. Next, the radio rack was made from brass angel-iron from a toy train store and some basswood. Primed and painted them too. Next, I guess, is to figure out how to make the canopy slides.
