Well, I just ordered Jerry Bates plans for the Hell Diver(1/6 scale).
Unfortunately, I just finished reading the history of the plane a few minutes ago. I hope the model flys/behaves better that it's real life counter part. I know that there is at least some 1/6 Hell Divers flying. Can anyone shed light on how these planes handle?
I'd like to know if the plane is worth building. If it's going to be a 8itch to fly....forget it. Right now I'm working on a PICA 190 D and was looking for my next project. Thanks for any help.

Later,

Mike

I have a glass and foam version done by Bert Baker. No word on flight difficulity but I would think that it may be a challange but very doable. After all it is a short coupled taildragger. I plane to use a Laser 300 in mine.

Thanks for the input Sparky. If nothing else, I'll see what Bates plans look like....I was also looking at the Tempest II plans....might go with it instead. Laser 300 eh....hope your saving your $$$ for it....but as the saying goes "you get what you pay for".

You should give Jerry a call, he should be able to tell you who is flying his Helldiver, and what their experiences have been.

Default Flight characterists / Canopy

Thanks all for your input. I just received a reply to an e-mail I sent to Jerry Bates:

"The problems experienced by the full size SB2C (Son of A ***** 2nd Class) were due to the airplane being over weight (high wing loading) and underpowered at low speed. The model does not exhibit these conditions. In fact, it is ultra stable at all speeds and exhibits superior low speed handling capabilities. With flaps and gear down, the ailerons are effective all the way to touch down.

The canopy female mold is finished. All I need do is have the time to pour the urethane vacuum forming tool and send it off to Lanier R/C. Hope to do that within a month."

I had hoped that this was the case.....no doubts left here. By the way, what did you think of the Hell Diver at the Toledo Show? Myself, I thought the guy (sorry don't remember his name) did an excellent job. Of course, now I really looking forward to building one of my own.

Later,

Mike
