Moki and Spit Kit
#1
Hello
i have a Moki 1.8 that isn't being used and am looking for some advice on which Spitfire would be a good one to build. i don't want an ARF and would like to build it as close to scale as i can. it will be a new avenue as i haven't build a warbird before. should i go with a fiber fuse or all wood?
any advice would be great.

dave platt has or had one at one time too.

The yellow would be a good match. The pica would be to big for that engine WS 88". Even Better try: http://www.vicrc.com/product_spitfire.htm
This is a fiberglass fuse built off of the Brian taylor plans. WS is 83" wich would be perfect for that engine. He sell a wing kit for it also. I've got a nice Air Hobbies in cowl muffler/muffler mount for sale if your interested: http://www.aero-sports.com/airhobbies/mount.html

The Yellow spit is the same size as the Pica Spit but the Pica is lighter. NOTHING flies better than the Yellow Spitfire though. Pica has the rails for a glow motor. The radial mount on the Moki is perfect for the Yellow. The Yellow Spit comes in at around 25 to 27 pounds...

For a warbird the Spitfire is a delight to fly, the tricky part is the landing...
Both the PICA and Yellow Spitfire suffers from the omission of the rather characteristic "gull wing" in the rear centre section of the wing. This is a pet peeve of Spitfire aficionados, but most people won't notice. From a scale point of view Brian Taylor's Spitfires are the best, no doubt about it.
The Moki will provide scale like power for both the Yellow and PICA Spitfires if kept light. The Pica kit has a lot of potential for weight saving measures and could quite easily be built a couple of pounds lighter than the Yellow Spitfire.

Red b... you are right . Brian Talor Spit has the best scale looks. Will the Moki fit in it? I dont know what size it is.
That Yellow Spit is a real joy to fly. With a little modification, you could do the gull wing with the 4 slit flaps. The Pica would require alot of mods to make it more than standwayoffscale. Dave Platt is a real good prospect for that motor. Builds really light (fragile), and you can scale it out too. Rumor has it Yellow more or less copied Platt's
design, But that is for another forum.

swixtt,
One that hasn't been mentioned yet is the Dave Platt Spitfire Mk XII kit. Like the Yellow and the Pica, it is 1/5th scale and shares the 88" wingspan. It builds very light and, like the other Spits, is easy to fly. Just move the main gear axles just a tad forward to prevent nose-overs common to most Spitfires. Dave himself recommended the Moki 1.80 for this kit to me when I ordered it.
While the Dave Platt Spit can be hard to find, they do show up on eBay on occasion. In fact, one just sold there last week. But, I just happened to have one new in the box complete with everything.......and I do mean "everything".........needed to complete this plane. Just keep in mind that this was Dave's last complete Spitfire kit and with the gear, cockpit kit, pilot and Glennis wheels and tires, it won't be cheap. However, if you are interested I can send you photos of what I have and a price.
With whatever decision you make, good luck. You can't go wrong with a Spitfire!!!

I would recommend the Dave Platt design. I am real pleased with his Zero at 18 pounds, much lighter than the Yellow Zero but 1" less in WS. Excellent attention to detail. I would not recommend his retracts though, see if Sierra Precision makes them. I believe Platt still has short kits available. The Moki 1.8 is a great motor.

The Taylor/Vic spit is 82" ws. the Moki would fit nicely. Because of it's size the power to weight would be much better with this smaller 82" ws.

. The Taylor/Moki combo is very nice. Especially so with one of Vic's glass fuses....very high quality. Builds into such a nice scale plane.

hey guys,
thanks for all the great feedback on these kits. i'm trying to find some active threads for some Spitfires either Pica, DP, Vic's... if you have any bookmarked, let me know.

As others have stated, the 1.8 is the perfect match for the Brian Taylor Spit. Without a doubt the most accurate kit available, also flies like a pattern ship.
This is a MkVIII or MkXIX model so the full size used a 4 blade prop. I flew mine with a 18/10 two blade prop.

Hey guys,
Just curious, how did you mount the Moki? inverted or sideways? And if it was inverted what kind of muffler did you use? I have a Pitts style muffler but it will only work if I mount it sideways. I would rather mount it inverted but can't find a muffler that will work.
Please advise,
Mike

i haven't mounted mine yet... but the muffler that i have for it is a J'tec. it is a very small muffler meant for inverted use.
does that help?
i can post a pic if you want to see it.
