Nice Boats, and like I said sailing is the only thing I mis about not living on the left coast, we had a 21' swing keel boat, but I crewed on a 28' and a 35 but that was along time ago.
I tryed the hidden cowel screws using tubes to align the driver, but for me it just brought frustration, So hope you find a good way to do them so I can learn

Thanks Bob
I tend to be more of a fare weather sailor now........not much fun being hammered by 20 foot waves it you don't have to......if we can't have a laugh and enjoy an ale then there is no point in racing ....me thinks
This is the 38" Northshore I crew on, this was the start of the Melbourne to Hobart ocean race, 27th December 07. We had won our division four times in the last 8 years but did not do so well this time due to very light winds which does not favour our boat. (to heavy with all the beer on board)
The 27" looks basically the same, obviously smaller and is a day sailer we tool around the bay on, lots of fun as we can sail it two handed...........
We have a 36 deg (that be hot - celsius) day forcast for tomorrow so an even sail and swim will be on the cards
I'll have some more shots of the Tempest progress shortly
cheers

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Capitol idea, there has not been any activity on that build thread since early Jan but he may respond.
That bow-at not mine........I just "pull the strings" on that one
They say the best two dwo days of boat ownership is the day you buy it.............and the day you sell it.
At around $100+ per week just to have one sitting in a pen at the yacht club is a fairly expensive floating caravan
We have whole week of + 35 deg days here in Melbourne (of course.........the Grand Prix is on so it's alway stinking hot) .....so not a lot of building activity this week.

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Hi Guys
Long time between posts but the Vailley Tempest build is still in progress.
The fuselage is sheeted and glassed and I'm going thru the fill-sand-fill-sand process which is almost complete.
The next step is the addition of the panel lines and several thousand rivets.........ughhh.
Anyway I'll post some recent pics shortly
cheers

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
G'day Guys
After a two month hiatus work has recommenced on the Valliey Tempest.
The Fuse is primed and I'm now adding the panel lines and rivets...........whilst I'm not looking at exact scale surface detail, I do have the Bently drawings for reference and I'm adding the major panel lines and rivets to create a"semi" scale effect.
I think my rivets are a little large however after already applying serveral hundred with athe soldering iron I think they will do fine (I go by the 30/30 rule..........if it looks good from 30ft or at a 30 sec glance it will do just fine )
I shot the high fill primer over the chart tape, wet sanded and add the rivets then sand again .....then I will shoot another layer of primer over the tape and rivets and wet sand again, hopefully this should do the trick.
I will then spray some aluminium colour over the lines and rivets, shoot the cammo colour over the top and then use 1200 wet n dry to wet sand enough colour back to expose the silver lines and rivets
Anyways here are a few shots of work on progress, panel line rivets going on, next is the radial rivet lines around the fuse and the rest of the tail plane.
Application fo rivets is very tedious however I find a cheaky bottle of Shiraz the ideal companion on these cold nights in the shed
cheers

Thanks Pete
The challenge is sticking to just one bottle of "claret" ..........thirsty work applying all those rivets............keeping them straight does get a little challenging though
I should have all the rivets and panel lines done over the w/e (the WX is looking way too crap for flying or sailing), the next step is to fit the donk and align the cowl with the spinner installed, a bit of messing around here ......... and then fit the elevators and rudder.

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Pete is right .........I think the Vailley Tempest cowl will be way too big as it is around 96" (I can't remember which) but it is 1/5 scale ..........85" is around 1/6
You can get an idea how big this think is in this shot.span is 96" and it is over 85" long and the fuse is around 11" wide where the cowl meets the firewall

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
good set of 3 views and profile drawings would be my guess. Have you contacted any of the manufacuers of Tempests to see if any have a cowl in your size?
What about the KMP typhoon? Not exactly the right nose but you might get away with it.

Sepp Uiberlacher offers a cowl for his 82.5" Tempest V. Depending how far along you are on your Tempest, you may want to switch over to this one. Here's a link, although Sepp is out of Canada so you may be able to buy directly from him:

Glad to help. Here is a link to contact Sepp. You need to scroll down and click on "view committee members".

I could be wrong on this, but I thought I read somewhere that Jerry Bates had done a Mk. V conversion for his Tempest II plan. It hadn't been released yet but someone was building the prototype.
