RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
A little more progress on the Tempest wing.
Inner gear doors trial fitted and servo linkages installed, I'm using a Jomar sequencer and servo's to operate the ineer doors
U/C trial fitted and cycled to ensure it all works as intended.
Next job is to shape the doors and tidy up the balsa edging between the doors and fuse, the doors are made from 2mm ply with 3mm laminated balsa on top, the top balsa sheet can them be sanded to match the curve of the underside of the wing........well that is the plan anyways.
The Robart air valve and retract servo are installed in the wing centre section next to the sequency and eventually the JR match box which will control all four flap servos.
Hmm .......all up the wing will have 11 servos installed (2 x Aileron, 4 x flap, 2 x iner gear doors, 1 x retract air valve and 2 x bomb release mechs) so with the sequency and Match box I will only have five servo leads to connect from the wing and the fuselarge............and one air line .

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Ok some significant progress in the last few days (the Bride was away so I could get to my shed)
Underside of wing now fully sheeted and tips installed and shaped, in the process now of fine tuning the fitment of the flaps and ailerons.
Inner gear doors trial fitted and operational ..............just need to clean up and shape properly with correct gaps
Alan

Hmmm............how observant of you Pete...........it's been rather warm down here over the weekend so the red has been swapped for cleansing ales...........and plenty were consumed
Although I may indulge in a splash or two of claret this evening whilst whittling more balsa !

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
quite partial to a nice drop of hunter valley red
or a nice marlbourgh sav blanc, suits our climate up here
on my seafury I'm only using 2 servos for the flaps,. hitec 645. There isa toungue type connector between the split flaps so that outer half is driven off inner
works very well. sing out f you want a photo of the setup.

Some pics of the servo set up would be good..........I thought I'd go for 4 x 645's through a match box for easier matching of throws etc

Al,
see if these are any use to you. The one of the servo is for the aileron but setup is about the same as for the flaps except the linkage is hidden.
The control horn I'm using for the flaps is exact same pattern as per the TF P47
cheers
Peter

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Thanks Pete............that is precisely what I have done with the flaps (alla P47) ..............but rather than have a sliding joiner that links the inner to the outer flap. I was going to use individual servos.
I have found that linking the two flaps always leaves one slightly out of alignment.............ie. slighly open........I might give it another go ......save some weight and a cople of servos.
cheers

Depends on how you do the link, on mine there is the tongue and from memory there is a rod as well. It works very well with no sag or gap at all and only the 2 HD servos to drive it.

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Ok .......some more progress
The wing has been glassed with 3/4 oz cloth applied with thinned epoxy resin, next step is to trim, sand off the high spots and runs and then apply the weave filling coat of resin.
The black stuff is carbon fibre tissue cloth applied between two layers of 3/4 oz f/g cloth..........to give added strength to the wing joins. This stuff is as hard as nails so should reduce wing flex and any long term possiblility of cracking around the wing panel joins.......I hope
stay tuned

Nice job Alan. Looks good and strong.
Would one be able to cover a whole wing with this 'Carbon Tissue'??
Let us know how it sands down and smooths.
Cheers,
Brad

Thanks Pete, your cloth is truly beautiful !
Dave ...........the c/f cloth sands easily ..............but for $20 for one square meter so it would be pricy to do a whole wing

Hey Allan,
Nice work so far! I am of the same school as yourself with having a servo per surface, but i have seen pete's sea fury tongue/grove setup and i remember thinking it was pretty good system... just a thought..

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
The C/F tissue cloth is super light weight however it is not a weave like f/g cloth, as such the C/F tissue tends to break apart if you work it too hard with a brush with thinned epoxy.
Once dry it is harder then f/g cloth (less flex in the surface sheeting betwen ribs)

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Hi guys
Wing now filled and primed...........next step is to install the flaps, ailerons and the inner gear doors. After that it will be time for the panel lines and rivets..........time to break out the red!
BTW.......the wing now has the correct washout of 1.5deg and is within 0.25 deg of incidence at the tips (much better than the previous wing that was out by over 3.5 deg)
cheers

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Thanks Pete............yes making some progress now............a little more hi fill primer on the top surface...........some more wet n dry work and it will be ready for lines and rivets.
I also need to make a plug for the cannon blisters, a mate has a vac forming machine so I'll carve a plug and get him to vac form four of the same (too hard to carve four identical blisters)
I found some 3M spray putty at my local Super Cheap auto store that is twice as thick as the normal Hi Fill primer I was using and much cheaper at only $12 a can. Much quicker to fill imperfections (and stuff ups)
Also - I remade the rudder using the clam shell method this time as the first attemp was rubbish, much easier to built and straight this time., I did not build in the trim tab..........I'll cheat and use panel line tape for the outline
cheers
