I'm about done with the left wing tip panel and going to be starting the center section. Did anyone build the 2 small sections from ribs # 8 thru # 11 first or did you build it along with the center section as one big piece?

Well I am test fitting all the ribs for fit and there are several that have to have there notch cut deep so they are flush on the top. I also am kida in a wondering mode right now over how to ben the hardwood pars that Don calls for. Even with balsa they would have to be soaking wet and bent a little at a time to get the right shape. I have thought of either notching with a V shape where the hardwood spard have to bend like I did for the wing tip washout and then after it's bent and permanently glued in place just epoxy the notches for strengh. What ya think? Here are some pics before I cut the notches deeper and cut off the flaps in the TE of the ribs except for the two #1 ribs.

Try steaming them for an hour or longer clamp in place over night or longer remove the clamps and see if they hold there shape if they do then attach

Hi guys I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a Top Flite corsair .60 kit, that I have. I was planning on building it but now I am in college and can't deal with being in different places all the time. I live in chicago go to school in Ohio and live in Butler PA over the summer. I would love to build it but just can't, and want an arf of something so I can fly. If anyone wants to trade a aerobatic plane I would be interested.

I am building a TF .60 f4u. the mods i am talking about to the bulkheads and to the nose of the aircraft, as well as adding extra support inside of the fuse for my mods. i built a lot of my servo platforms and hatch boxes on the frame then planked the fuse and i ill cut everything out later so the fuse will stay true. one mod im talking about is scale mod so that i can have the gas tank right infront of the cockpit like the real bird. its a little father back then the plans called for and a mod to the bulckheads was needed. i also did a little bit of predetail work like running wires for the light and what not.

For those hard wood spars that have to bend, I would go with ether A/C spruce or some stright grain ash, and an easy steamer is 2" blk iron pipe capped one end and about 2 " longer than your bend needs fillabout 1/2 to 3/4 boil watter as needed and put spars in place and let dry, it is a slow process but works great

Since the whole middle section is plywood and doesn't call for shear webs between the top and bottom spars I have decided to go with Pat from Laser Cut USA who sent me hard balsa. I will use it and then put in shear webs which he said would take care of the difference in the spars. The center section's 1/8" thick spar braces will also be there on one side of the spars. He made my spar braces all in one piece with no need for splicing which cost him more to ship for the long box but he said it will be much stronger than having a spar brace as most kit cutters provide due to their customers demand like PCK etc.

PS: Also I intend on using a very thinned mixture of Z-Poxy finishing resin to soak into the spars once they are in place.

Before I started gluing anything I called Darrell at Seirra to see if I needed to do anything special before gluing in the ribs. I am happy I did. A big mod had to be made on both sides for the gear to ribs 6 and 7 in front of the main spar brace. The Seirra gear calls for a 4" opening and the way Don drew it wouldn't work. I had to cut the two ribs #'s 6 & 7 on each side where they were notched for the main spar brace and then cut the tabs off the front that go into the LE spar brace. Then make a perpindicular line going up from the bottom of the widest opening at the ribs. They used to be angled and the top was only 2 1/8" wide. Now it's the same as the bottom 4 3/16" on each side for the gear. I already cut the # 6 ribs for the wheel but the kit cutter didn't make a laser line on th # 5 ribs and they need to be cut out also. I'm using Seirra's 8" wheels so I'm making them a little bigger than the exact 8" they are for Don's recommended 7 3/4" wheels. Im using triangular stock for the ribs where they hold the gear will use epoxy to make it strong. Hardwood triangular stock on the outside and balso on the inside per Darrells suggestion. 1/2" balsa on the inside and 3/4" hardwood on the outside. If you have already built your center section now would be a good time to fix Don's error in the rib layout. I'll add the rest of the hardwood later. Right now the font part of the 4 ribs are just tack glued in place until I get my gear and have a chance to double check everything.

I would laminate the spars from multiple pieces of something like 1/32" plywood.

The maximum angle of deflex on the flaps is 30 degrees when fully open. Hope that helps.

Gotta run but I worked 7 hours on the center section today and did get the hardwood to bend submerging it in the bath tub with 3 gallons of pure amonina. Boy did that p... off the woman. It stunk up the whole house. Only good point is it really made my mother in law mad and she left. Hoo-Ray. Anyway here is how far I am on the center section. Somemore framing to go on the tip part of the centersection and a complete build of the left side center section extension. It add 4 ribs.

Well thats 2/3 rd's of the wing framed. Just one more center section extension and the wing will be framed up ready for a trial fit on the fuse. After all this work I sure hope it fits within reason.

I rough framed the extension for the center section's left side. I'll add the shear webs tomorrow and the tube. Then I will have to cut and sand off any excess spar material that is hanging over so they join neatly. I should be able to have that side all framed up by the end of the day tomorrow. Oh yeah I'm getting a totally scale Corsair pilot for my bird. Graham from Tiger Models is making it for me. They are each hand made and painted. I'll see if I can find a picture of one. Here's 2 of them, one German for a 109 and the other American in a P-51 I think. Anyway you can see why I want one.

IT FITS!!!

I couldn't wait. Without the webs I slid the left extension into place on the main center section and did a test fit. All but having to either cut out a piece of one of the center ribs or relocate my gear valve it fit amazingly well. Here are some pictures of the fuse with just the center section. No wing tip panels until it has got the webs in. By the way it will come out to 121.5" wide. I gotta go but I'll post more pic's tomorrow.

I'm waiting for my prop to get here in the next week or so and see how it fits. I don't have a test stand for this size engine so for until I do that I'll leave it on. It also gives me an idea of the balance. It seems like it will be about right the way I've built it. There is a lot of weight up front now.

Wow Wow Wow!!!! Barry you make me proud!!!! Your doing a great job on Don's plane. This is a plane that I was scared to tackle, being Don Smith plans. My friend is building a 1/4scale p-47, Dons Plans too. What a monster!!!! Too much for me. He doesnt want to do another one either. Am I the only madman around??? John

I've seen your work. You are a very experienced and could probably build this one easlily if I can. This is my first Monster Warbird and it has been a challenge from the start. The worst part about Don's plans is they don't really tell you squat. I have had some set backs here and there but just keep plugging away with it. If I can afford another big plane I might become a madman too. I might build something else of Don's. I think it is like riding a bike once you learn you have it for life. Well in this case if you can build one and it flies why not torture yourself somemore. I wish you would post your build over here. I don't go on RCSB anymore because just one thread is enough and besides it's free and the picture thing isn't a problem like on theirs. I never got that part about making the pictures smaller right. So it took me to long. Thanks for the compliment and please respond more often. Any help you can give me I would appreciate.
