To me, the location of the whole assembly when down is the most noticeable improvement (with hinge point's relative location). Nice change! Now with this over with..get to work so we can pick on something else[sm=lol.gif]. I think this has been a good example of how this RCU benefits us all. Looking forward to future progress!

I know Jim too. I visited his -5 when it was here for service. I took a lot of pictures and video of it too. He's a regular at the Mt. Comfort airshows and always puts on a demonstration. I'll get more pictures of the FG-1D up there for you.

I got it from the Man of retracts. Darrell at Seirra. I can't wait to see what the mains are going to look like if this TW looks so great. He knows his stuff and is an excellent craftsman and machinist.

Thanks for the compliment Luke I appreciate it more than you know. Now it's onto where to put the air tanks. Any sugesstions from the crowd. I just don't know where they would be best located. I'm thinking right behind the cockpit wall up high. They will be out of the way and I can service them if need be.

Gibbs, I saw an 82" Brian Taylor Corsair on the Scalercbuilder site. It put one tank parallel to the leading edge on each inner gull panel. I thought that was kind of novel; it frees up room in the fuse and puts the weight in front of CG. It is a nice use of otherwise wasted space, but i'm not sure how handy the air lines would be. I think you could put the valve and servo in the wing and then you only need to connect the servo (if your tail retract isn't air)! Glad your stickin in here I forget how darn big your plane is, you might be able to fit them in the cockpit's map pocket

It's big enough that I keep hitting the tail on the ceiling joists when I go to turn it around to work on the other side and visa versa. Plus it doesn't even have the 5 1/4" tailcone on it yet. Anyway I cut out the bellypan for the wing and also revealed the wing saddle. The plan doesn't call for putting anything on the formers from the front to the back of the saddle. I'm putting on 1/32" plywood. That way I can use resin and microballoons if the wing doesn't fit perfectly. And they never do. At least for me anyway.

I only use the wood glue when it's something that can be clamped. Otherwise it's CA and accelerator. When I was framing I used almost all the wood glue for that. I wanted time to fix any thing that seemed twisted or uneven. I am leveling everything I glue onto this bird so it better fly level. I can't wait til you get yours going. How's the TF Giant doing? Right now I'm working with the kit cutter Pat and trying to figue a way to hold the wing to the fuselage. In the plan it only shows wing hold down bolts but nothing for them to screw into. Don must of had a brain fart when he drew that section. Anyway you will see what I mean when you get this kit and start to try and make it match the plan. I is mostly guess work. I got one of my wing saddles finished today and found out when I checked the front brace on the fuse that the engine box that extends back to former #4 was to high and the wing brace sat on it instead of the saddle. You might see the engine brace dremeled down in this picture. of the saddle. Out came the dremel and that problem is solved. Now on to the next problem.

I have heard that about all his plans (not being complete ).You have got a great scale guy (Luke )watching your thread to help with that part of the build .On the TF giant i am looking for a good warm day to get the color coats on then cover the control surfaces wich is the part i despise to do then put it all back together

Just wanted to say great looking project so far. Sure would love to start working one along side of you, but it'll have to be a few years before I start building something that large. Anyway, keep up the good work. I love to see the craftmanship!

Hi NCIS,

To mount the wing, I am using 1/4" ply as a wing mounting plate and two 1/4x 20x 4 1/4 nylon screws to hold the wing in place. It not pretty, but it is functional. I had initial thought about gluing hardwood blocks to the inside of the wing saddle, but decided the area was not strong enough.

Also, I mounted the TW today. I realized that once that section of the fuse is completely sheeted, there is no way to service the air cylinder if there is a problem. The pictures below show where the air cylinder is mounted and also the wing mounting plate. I would certainly be interested in your method for mounting the air cylinder for the TW.

Darrell said there is no need to worry about the air cylinder. It will work as long as you have the plane. I might make a hatch to get to the air line and that's about it. You just solved two of my problems and I'm copying both your hold down plate and air cylinder ideas. Here are my air tanks installed all tucked up nice and neat in front of the main spar and cockpit. I used two 1/8" pieces of balsa and glued them together and made two of them. I dremeled out the holes to the exact size of the tanks and glued them to the formers. They follow the curve of the formers. Nice and neat and out of the way. What's nice is they are easy to get to from the open wing saddle area. Heres a couple pic's.

As you can see from this picture your method just went bye-bye. Do you think if I were to put the piece of plywood just above the frame work of the cockpit floor held with epoxy and traingular stock that it would be sufficient to hold the wing down. I can't move the floor or I can throw the $200.00 custom cockpit out the window. This is the problem with custom work where everything is not taken into account. If the designer of the cockpit would of realized there had to be a wing hold down plate he would of made the cockpit differently. It's not his fault, it is just that it wasn't on the plan and he only built the planes area surrounding the cockpit. Help me out with this one. Would the wing hit the plywood before making contact with the wing saddle if I did what I intend on doing? I'm asking because you already have the wing built and have attached it to the plane. How much space is there between the top of the wing and the bottom of you plywood hold down plate approx.? This will help me better determine if I need to tear out the cockpit floor and change the way it looks inside. It will really make the cockpit look crappy when it is going to be so nice complete.[&o]

The distance between the top of the wing and the bottom of the wing mounting plate is 1 1/4".

From placing the TE Brace in it's proper location, it looks like I will have plenty of room for the solid piece of maple that I'm using instead of plywood accross and between the plywood wing saddles just above my cockpit floors bottom. I hope anyway. I'm going to use 1/2" maple 3" wide and the length it will need to be to span the opening. Wish me luck. I finished up on the wing saddles so there both done now. I also reinforced the formers where they come together just for added strength. I ran my fuselage lighting wires for the spine and tail. I am still working on lighting up the back of the instrument panel so it looks like the gauges are back lite with red lighting. I have a few more things to do to the fuse before I set it to the side and build the fin, rudder, stabalizer, and elevators. Then I want to assemble it and finish with the planking. I'm still working on how to use either air or servos to operate the sliding canopy. I'm leaning toward servos so I can set end points. Heres what I've done.

I installed the engine today to see if it was going to fit inside the cowling. I only have about 1/4" on each side of the engine to spare. Plus the plug wires still have to go on. They take up about 1/8" more so that doesn't leave me much. I'm just happy it fits. I like the idea of having 20 hp at my fingertips. Here are the installation pictures with the cowl and I threw on the canopy just to see if it resembled a Corsair. There is a bunch of sanding and shaping to get it right but I think it will look great when its done.

Funy you say that. My Bamboo Bomber is the exact same way. He shows bolt holes in the wing, but nothing to screw them into. to make it worse, the place is all sticks, no formers, no sheeting. I had to make plates to spread the load out over the stringer structure, then add a ply wingmount that spanned the fuse.

When you begin work on your wings, you may want to consider adding a couple of dowels to the outer panels to keep it from rotating on the wing tube. The plans only show a single screw being used to hold each outer panel to the center wing section. In my opinion, that may not be adequate to prevent the wing from twisting on the wing tube.

Thanks David I'll do that. If you did could you post a couple pic's of the dowel positions? Right now I'm working on the engine box. I have to move it back 3/4" to allow for an adapter from Solo Props. They were given bad info and when I went to try it on it wouldn't attach to the bigger backplate. Carl at Solo is machining me a special adapter for this engine. They never made a prop for the big 200cc.

I am using 5/16 diameter dowels to prevent the outer wing panels from rotating on the wing tube. The first dowel is approximately
2 1/2 inches from the leading edge, and the second dowel is about 4 inches from the trailing edge. I have started sheeting the wing with the 1/64" ply. Once that is completed, the fuse will be sanding and 1/64" ply will be applied to it. Perhaps by the end of April, I will have the horizontal and vertical stabs attached to the fuse.

Where did you get the wing tube and the tube it slides into? Sorry for the questions, but you are very far ahead of me because of my mod's. I have the turtle deck planked and most of the rest of the fuse that I don't need to get into. I'm working on the TW retract air cylinder today.

I purchased the wing tube back in 2006 when I started building the plane. I believe, the wing tube was purchased from TNT Landing Gear. If I remember correctly, the phenolic tube comes with the wing tube. Their website is www.tntlandinggear.com. The phone number is (419) 868-5408.

FB MB339 (White and Red) Single Turbine setup-95 inches long and wingspan 102 inches/This plane flies like a big trainer.

Boomerang XL (White,Blue, and Red) Single Turbine Setup-95 inches long and wingspan 95 inches/ This plane flies great.

Jet Legend F-16, 1/6 scale (Gray) Single turbine-98 inches long and wingspan 65 inches/Just received this plane 4 days ago. Have yet to begin the installation of the electronics and powerplant.
