Thanks for the responses guys.

Jeremy and/or Bob:

I noticed you both mentioned flying with the Moki 1.8. Any value in considering a 2.1? Or does the increased cylinder height stick too far out of the cowl and ruin the whole scale fidelity argument? (I haven't received the kit yet to measure it myself.)

I would really like my Spitfire to fly with authority, but I would like to minimize the amount I have to cut up the cowl. It sounds like the ZDZ 40 is a reasonable solution. Any other choices that allow more scale fidelity?

Thanks!

Paul

If the Moki 2.1 were available when I built my kit.. I would have got that but it wasnt.. I have my doubts about the zdz40..even tho it may fly it ok..?? I would move up the the zdz 50 if I were making the choice now.. A guy I fly with is using a Mustang 50 with a 22-10 bolley. and it really scoots!! Very Impressive flights for sure... BobH.

Paul,
The 1.8 was the only one avaliable when I built mine. Actually I started out with a ST3000. Huge mistake, lots of deadstick landings. Out came the ST and in went the Moki. If the 2.1 is just a bored out 1.8 I'd go for that. As far as ZDZ I've never had any experence with gassers. I just prefer the simplicity of glow and the compactness.

Jeremy/ Bob: What kind of accomodations have you made for cooling the Moki? Is it completely concealed, or does the cylinder head stick out?

Paul, here is what I did for my Spit.. Right behind the cylinder I opened the firewall with a slot that goes across the fire wall the width of the fuse.. the slot is about 1.5 inches deep.. Inside the fuse.. I built a simple lite-ply box that ducts the air flow through the fuse to exit at the oil cooler on the bottom of the wing.. this gives me air flow right across the cylinder. The front of the cowl has a small opening on the bottom behind the spinner for the air intake.. Yes the cylinder does protrude slightly but not much..Another thing.. my Engine is not exactly vertical but is maybe 15 degrees (?) off axis. This was done to accommodate the Slim line, pitts style, muffler so it would be completely within the cowl..I had to releave the fire wall about 1/8 inch so the muffler would clear it. So far I haven't had any heating problems and I don't expect any.... hope this helps.. Regards BobH.

I am not flying my Moki 1.8 in a war bird but do have it in a Hanger 9 Edge 540. We are concerned about noise at our field and when I was using 18x8 and 18x10 props I just felt it was a little too loud with a Pitts style muffler. I now have a Graupner 16x8 3 blade prop. What a difference in the sound and no noticable change in performance. The wide blades really pull. I would think this would be of interest to war bird lovers for the more scale appearance.

Triadsport, how does that Edge perform with the Moki? I have a Saito 1.8 fs in mine and its plenty of power.. I would imagine you have Power to spare?... 3 bladed props are a great way to reduce noice.. they would look great on a corsair or hellcat for sure.. not so good on a P-51 or Jug lol... thanks BobH.

BobH - My Edge weighs in at 12.5 lbs and has fantastic performance. Loops as big as you want and strong vertical. I am just now getting to the point of trying hovering but from the little I have done the engine will pull it out with no problem.
