Thanks, just not looking forward to setting up the new shop but I’m sure it will be worth it once it finished.

A friend of mine sent me a link to a reduction unit for the g-62 and after doing some research I have decided to get a pair and set up my G-62s with them. Not only will it let me swing the big props but it’s stated that my thrust will increase as much as 30% and the engines run cooler. It also moves the center line for the props and this should keep everything inside the cowl will no blisters necessary. The only bad review I read was that some did not like the sound of the engine with the prop turning a different speed so I found a video with a running G-62 with the reduction unit. I liked the sound myself and the +s seem to out weigh the -s..
Anyone using them?

Ron
G-DAY RON
My first time in, Did look at putting a reduction unit in my ZP38 but I thought the weight maybe an problem went for DA 50, DIFF in weight DA 3LBS g-62 with unit about 9LBS each (I THINK )

Hey Ron,
That reduction unit looks sick. How much of a reduction is it? How much does it weigh? Just be sure your Wing-loading is too high or it's gonna fall out of the sky like a rock! LOL
Mine's getting close. I had to change the engines out to DA 50's because I couldn't get any help getting the Revolution engines running backwards! Oh well.
Talk soon

Jim you have to let me know when your ready for the first flight on your p-38, it will give me a boost to get moving on mine.

Here what I know so far about the reduction units. The ratio is 1.75-1 and is said to take the standard g-62 thrust from 20lbs to 30lbs. They are heavy 2.25 Pounds each, but we need weight up front anyway. I think I can shave a few oz. from themif needed. Also stated is that the g-62 will swing a 30 inch prop at 4000 rpm which is bigger than I'm looking for. I ordered one just to see for my self and to see if I'm going to have any problems with getting it to fit under my cowls.
How do you like all the snow!!!! I took all our planes out of the shop area today. With all the roof cave ins I'm starting to get nervous that it could happen to us. Everything is insured but you know better than me that the insurance companies will not give us what the planes are really worth.
I'm taking the 38 to wram next month, you going?

Hey Ron,
Sounds Cool. A nice big prop would scale it up nice!
SNOWWWWW!!!!! I feel like I live in Vermont![:'(] This is crazy. Glad the planes are safe. You got your priorities straight for sure.
I'm definitely going to the WRAM show. What day are you bring the 38 up? I'm heading up on Friday with a group of friends. Hope to see you there.

I'll definitely give you a shout when she's ready. I had to give it another coat of primer on the booms and main cockpit. The primer you put on there was incredible. I couldn't believe how well it filled in. But once I saw it all put together I had to do a bit more work to get it up to snuff. Anyway it's looking pretty good now so hopefully it will be ready soon.
Jim
Here's a pic of mine with the prop mounted. I built up the edge of the cowl to accommodate for the angle of the engine. In the pic was sanding the cowl with sandpaper stuck to the back-plate.

Looks like a nice unit, but from the picture, and knowing how close to the top of the cowl the prop is on a P-38, do you think the spark plug will still fit inside, without a cut out or unsightly blister?

put some small air hoses on these cylinders and plug them - when you open and close (gear doors) you suck all surrounding dust into the cylinders....[X(]

Jim nice and neat, looks great. Don't forget to put a stop mech. on the pistons or they will twist the gear doors. Thats a good idea pete!! I spent 20 mins. with an air nozzle and vac and still found dust trapped in the booms.

I got my paint mask and dry-transfers from Promark the other day and started the paint detailing in hopes to have that finished for WRAM. I also finished the 50 cal. Ammo feed trays,, what a pain in the @$$ I still have to aluminum plate them and fab up some 50 cal. bullets.

Jim our morphed yellow P-38 has a new owner. Wayne from Delaware picked it up on Saterday, I thought my son in law was going to cry when we place it in his SUV. Wayne is great guy and a very talented rc pilot. I know it's in good hands and look forward to seeing photos of another morphed aircraft in flight. We also talked about getting a couple p-51s morphed but I will start a new thread on that

What do do use for a stop mechanism? I'd imagine wheel collars but I want to be sure.
I did my Panel lines tonight on the main fuse. Real easy with the soldering gun, thanks for the tip.

Rolling Circle,

Better than wheel collars are simply lengths of tubing that slide over the piston rod cut to the desired length stopping the clevis the needed distance from the cylinder. It will be sandwiched beween the bottom of the jam nut on the clevis and the top of the cylinder. Wheel colars are a one shot deal, as they will dent and burr the rod which will leak and/or cut the O-ring seal after just a few strokes, if not the first when you work the cylinder wihtout the clevis or have to reposition the collar. Brass tube can work or plastic tube as well.

The wheel collars are good when the doors are retracted, just try to max out the piston before door hits the boom when they are open

A few photos of some over due paint work. The paint masks are from Pro-Mark . When it come to doing the prep for paint over our aluminum plating it has to be treated like its solid counterpart, that means using a self etching epoxy primer that is reduced about 10% more than is recommended. After the primer has flashed off it’s sanded with 1200 and the base coats are applied. Remove the inner mask and apply the urethane clear coat with flattening agent added to spec. I advise never using cheep tape when painting automotive type paints, these paints are very aggressive and will bleed under the edges of the tape. Another tip is do not LOAD up the masked area with paint, better to use several light coats rather than one heavy coat of paint letting them flash before applying the next coat.

Anti-glare panels, stars and bars are finished, now moving on to the invasion stripes on the bottom of the wings. The photo of the wing shows it with the EP primer applied. After it cures for a few hours I will spray the entire area black, then mask for the white.

Thanks Jim. As for appling rivets to your lighting I have a good tip for you that makes the application of them a lot easier,,,, first you get all the tools your going to need set up in a nice clean area, next you have all your friends over to see how easy it is to apply rivets and fasteners, now ask one of them if they would like to try it, then keep telling them what a great job they are doing and tell them to keep going until they get tired, then start the process with the next friend. Works for me!!

Jim do you make a wing bag for the z p-38 size wing? I might like to get a set for the trip to wram.

OK Tom Sawyer! LOL

Actually we stopped making wingbags But!!!! I have a set from another P38 that is bigger than the Ziroli but they ended up being too small. I'll give you a call tomorrow once I try my wing in them
Time for bed!

Jim,
Enjoyed your company and that 38 or yours is looking sweet!! I want to thank you again for those custom made wing and prop bags, my son in law didn’t know that you made them. Let me know when your ready to clear coat your Lightning and we set up a date to get it finished. As you can see in the picture we got the stripes finished and just waiting on the graphics and we should be ready for WRAM..

Jim Monday works good for us, we will see you then.

I want to get a few more details added to the gun bay before WRAM. I added the 50.cal. feed trays and ammo. The trays are made from a thin fiberglass and the ammo was made from brass tubing and copper. I'm still working on the firing mechs and clips.

Once again a big thanks to my friend Ron. He let me use his booth and lean on his expertise to get the matte clear on my P-38. I also got to see his P-38 with the wings on today. Looking better every time I see it.

UPDATE,,,,,,,,

I managed to get the P-38 ready enough for the WRAM show in NY. But I must say it wasn’t easy... We are in the middle of major move here a MM and I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it. My son in law was the one that made it happen. I wasn’t able to have the Lightning completed but with some pit and glue I think it was worthy for display and I was really looking forward to going this year. I caught up with some old friends and made a some new ones.. The static display was fantastic this years!!! Lots of beautiful models. One of the highlights for me was when Nick Ziroli came down to see the P-38 (More than once),, PHOTOS BELOW He filled me in on the first few flights of his P-38,,,great story. We close on our new building the end of this month and have to remodel and set up the new building. I hope to be back online the first of May so if you don’t see any post for awhile it’s just due to the move.
Enjoy the photos and once the engines are installed I'll start posting more photos.

Ron
