I sure wish you could get plans for ARF's.[:'(] I need to fab up at least three wing ribs and having a set of plans would sure make my repair easier.

I couldn't get a set of plans from either Tower Hobbies or directly from TopFlite, but I did find a kit assembly manual http://manuals.hobbico.com/top/topa0110-manual.pdf
Hope it gives me a little help.

Joemama,
Sorry about the damage. I know all about that. I try not to fly if its too windy or gusty or too much cross wind. (chicken). Also I try to carry a little power all the way to the ground and land on the mains. It is possible to three point, but plane gets too slow for comfort. The wing and gear mounting area is not real strong and as with most warbirds every landing needs to be a good one or you will be spending a lot of time on repairs. So why do I have a bunch of warbirds? Because they are fun (mostly). Just a note.
The out door latex paint seems to be holding up ok and not affected by gasoline and hot oil out of exhaust.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
Hello all,
Iv'e made some progress, but as they say life gets in the way sometimes I have the covering complete, and the nose painted, I still need to finish the pnl lines on the fuse, but it's starting to look like a P-51 again. I did get a set of the the Firepower 110 Gal drop tanks which should look pretty cool on it.
It has a Great Planes RimFire 120, a Castle ICE 100 ESC, Eflite retracts (Robart tail wheel) and I will be flying it on two 3 cell 5000 mah lipo's in series. I have the same setup in my TF Bonanza and at 13lbs it flies great, so the Mustang at 9.5lbs should go like a rocket.
More to follow, but it's at least at a stage where I can post a photo..

Sorry for the dumb question...
Would s3003 servos be ok in this plane with a dle20?
I only ask as I have a stock of these.. or high torque digitals for 3d gassers... If the 3003's are ok i´ll use them.. if not I guess i'll need to go shopping!!

Regarding the futaba 3003's I would think you would be ok. I opted for hitec 485hb carbonite servos in my hangar 9 spitfire with the dle 20. I am not sure if the shaft is that much stronger, but there is more torque and gives me a little piece of mind. For $6 you get more powerful servos. I am considering going to a 645mg hitec servo for the metal gear. This airplane will HAUL with the dle engine. It was faster than I expected changing from the ys 91 fz to the dle 20.
3003
Torque: 44 oz-in (3.2 kg-cm) @ 4.8V
57 oz-in (4.1 kg-cm) @ 6V
485
Torque: 66.6 oz-in (4.8 kg-cm) 83.3 oz-in (6.0 kg-cm

I don't know how much of a power difference there is between the DLE and my Saito 115 but I setup mine with the futaba 3003's. It's a fast model with the Saito and the correct prop. No signs of any problem after many flights. Truthfully the control surface deflection required to fly this model is minimal if you fly it like a warbird. The exception to that is the flaps that need to be deployed beyond the recomended amount to get a nice landing (at least for my thumbs) but they are used for only a short portion of each flight. Of course the servo for the mechanical gear is another story completly.

Plastic gear servos are fine for the ailerons and flaps, but I wouldn't trust them for the rudder, and don't care to use them on the elevator. I used HiTec 325s for flaps/ailerons on mine, and S3305 Futabas on the rudder/elevator.
I know some of the plastic gear servo makers specifically state not to use them in gas engine applications. Must be a reason for that.

In the end, talking about servos is pointless.
The shop where I bought the plane, and paid for it 3 days ago.. has only now phoned me to say they dont have it in stock, and from the way he was talking, never did... He seems to operate on the "you order it and i'll go find it" philosophy.....
But 3 days to do that?!
Bloody spanish!
Hey Tower hobbies! An order is coming your way!

kurrikan:
She's looking like an old war horse!!
I have painted over monokote- I used Top Flite Lustre Kote spray paint in cans. Red, yellow, cub yellow, white, aluminum, insignia blue, black, clear, flat clear, and primer are available. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...kote&search=Go
All I did was to "rough" the monokote surface with some 220 grit sandpaper. I put kind of a "cross hatch" on it. It seemed to stick well, and looked very good.

You can resrink with a heat gun but not a iron.I have done mine, but it turns the flat lustercoat glossy. If you need to make repairs, the paint needs to be removed with some type of thinner.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
Hello Manuel in Spain. Your Mustang is looking great. I used Robart 550RS air up spring down retracts. But won't buy any more air retract as I have discovered "Wing Span" electric retracts which work great. The struts are Robart 662L & R, 7/16" diameter, 3.25 to 3.5" wheels. Tower Hobby stock number is LXMRP0 and LXMRN9. $52.99 each. I'm using 3.5" wheel as they are the largest that will fit in the wheel wells. I used 90 degree retracts so they would retract further into the wing. Had to alter the gear mounts and also raked them forward because of our grass field.
With regard to paint, I used steel wool on the monokote and primed with automobile gray primer and used exterior latex flat paint. This will hold up to gasoline but not glow fuel.
This plane flys good and take offs and landings are not bad for a warbird.
