Knit one, pearl 2...still trying to fugre that out.. just keep in mind that knitting yarn is much more forgiving than balsa
I think we should all take a road trip to Peters house for lessons on detailing...

Plenty of room here, just another 40 min north from Niagra and your here.
First thing we do is hit the War Plane Heritage Museum at Hamilton Airport it's only 15 miles away.

Great site Peter.
I found some reference to my current build. A 1/3d Fleet Finch 16B in RCAF colors. When this gets finished (Early Spring), I can get started on my Avenger with a side project of a new left wing for my Sagitta sailplane.
I did notice few months ago that I had painted the Red,White and Blue on the fin in the wrong order. It has since been corrected.

Just a status note: our restored TBM has been moved from the restoration facility and is now at Hagerstown airport awaiting reassembly of the wings and then flight tests before arriving at Culpeper Regional Airport, VA. This gives me an opportunity to do any photos of detailed areas yous guys might need.

Hey everyone,
I purchased the plans and some of the parts. I traded some emails with Charlie and can safely say my build will not be the fastest in fact the opposite is true. I am currently finishing up a Ziroli P47 and should be wrapping it up in 9-12 months. In the meantime, I am cutting the short kit & buying parts. I may even start on the tail.
I am curious as to what engines people are using for their builds. Between the landing gear and engines it is a serious investment so I need to research my options and start saving the lunch pennies.

We're using a DA-85, probably a bit too much power but we got a great deal on the engine. Good luck on the build, the guys on the thread are excellent teachers.

Hi Michael,
I think just about everyone here is using Sierra landing gear.
For power both Noah and I are running moki 150's but bear in mind the Moki is a very tight fit, it's possible but snug.

I've been following your thread and have to say your all do EXCELLENT work! Maybe I can join you some day. Right now I don't have room for building or flying, so I'm working on Heli's. It's been a steep learning curve.
I do have one coment (complaint). Do not put a 2 bladed prop on these valiant old warbirds. Trainers like the T-28 or T-34 OK but none of the real winners of WWII had 2 bladed props. I don't know about Avengers but I know P-51's and F4U's had 4 bladed props. In fact the long 4 bladed prop on the F4U is the reason for the inverted gull wing to keep the length of the landing gear shorter.
My father now 88 yo served on the USS Saratoga, CV3, as an A/C Ordinanceman and actually flew a few missions as tail gunner in TBF/M's . He said the original TBF's would almost hit the water on take off (no catipults), but the later ones with the 200hp increase weren't bad.
I got to see a TBM at The Warbird Museum in Kissimee, FL and it is indeed impressive (huge). If you are ever down that way stop by. These guys restore old planes from wrecks. They had a P-38 that had crashed up here in Alasaka. Very little of it was useable, but since they had a serial number and a couple of peices and a copy of the original drawings, they could make the needed parts and get it certified. AMAZING!

I just returned from the Deland Golden Hawks IMAA in Deland, Fla. While we were there, we took in the "Deland Naval Air Station Museum".
Featured is lots of memorabilia in the house but outside is a large PT boat under reconstruction and a recovered TBF that crashed just off a carrier launch in Lake Michigan. I got some good pix of the poor condition plane and it is being slowly restored to non-flying condition. I'll post them when I can get them out of my camera.

As promissed, some pix of the TBF restoration in Deland, Fla.
The mounted engine is a timed out beyond repair engine donated as the orginal engine was nearly consumed by the elements.

The wonderful story as told by the pilot who ditched the bird is that immediately after clearing the flat top's deck, an engine fire broke out and he lost power thus ditched in about 150 deep Lake Michigan waters. He got out OK and he made no mention of any other crew members aboard at that time.
As the Deland Museum got the bird (still owned by the USNavy) contact was made with the pilot and he came to visit his old steed. Upon the beginnings of restoration, a signal flag with attached wood staffwas found amid the engine cylinders. Obvious burn marks to theleft over fabric and the cause of his engine fire was discovered some 60 years later. The flag is in the museum along with a great little video of the pilot climbing about the wrecked bird. Hedonated his flight togs and other memorabiliato include a huge navplotter that wassalvaged from the plane.
Do note the securing ring on the inbd side of the wheel axle. Some many years ago, I serviced a transienting TBF at the FBO I worked at. I do remember those rings as I stepped about the craft taking pictures. I wish I could find them now.
