RE: Byron Mustang
looking good mate,
for the rivetting, just remember ED (edge distances). Depending on the manufacture, but they are normally a minimum of 1.5 to 2.5 times the diameter of the head of the rivet. This also generally applies to the distance from one rivet to the next.
Keep steaming on!
Thanks
dave

RE: Byron Mustang
Thanks for the info..
I wanted to ask, I see alot of model interiors with a black I guess its carbon or kevlar lining on the inside..
Just wondering what it is and why people do that, is this something that I should consider?
Heres an example..

RE: Byron Mustang
Im using the TF rivet template..
These are the 1/5th scale rivets according to it..Do they seem too big?
They seem alittle large to me..What do you think?

RE: Byron Mustang
How does the diameter compare to the diameter of the fasteners molded into the fibreglass that Byron put in? I am assuming that Byron got the scale size of their molded fasterners correct. I painted my fuselage, therefore the fastener detail shows through and it looks correct.
Regards,
Mark
PS I still plan on posting a couple pics, but have been out of town, work, etc., etc.

RE: Byron Mustang
I think it all works out..you can see in the above pics the rivets moulded intot he kit plus the two different sizes that I added..
There is also a third size im going to use as well, thats bigger then the general body rivet and smaller then the moulded Byron ones..

RE: Byron Mustang
Looks great. Do you intend to do a weathering wash? Think I remember some posts on that topic earlier. If so, that will also bring out the relief of the rivets. Got my Ultra Flash from Fedex Tuesday, so that now competes with the P-51 for completion this winter. Regardless, I want the Mustang ready to go for next Spring.

RE: Byron Mustang
If my mustang had half the detail yours did I would keep it on the coffee table in my livingroom.
Heres the video of the flight and build.

RE: Byron Mustang
Beautiful Fred..Zips right along, and sounds great..
Im going to consider the radio you are using..Ive got HT servos installed as well, so more then likely Ill go that route.
Itll wind up hanging from the ceiling in my den, but its got to fly at least once or to me it wont be complete..besides id like to see it fly a few times..
Mark I plan on doing some weathering after all the finishes are complete..painting and decals etc...

RE: Byron Mustang
Finished about 90% of the rivets on the one side and am going to shift to the other soon..
Im going to put on the stars ID #'s, and misc nomenclature as I get to them unless there is something that requires paint first..I thougth it would be neat to make it look factory a bit before the final scheme..

RE: Byron Mustang
A few more shots of the left side with the factory nomenclature..
The model im replicating has most of the real detailed stuff missing, so im going to do the same..
Going to work on the right side next..

RE: Byron Mustang
Where did you get the decals for the nomenclature on panels, etc.? I vaguely remember seeing them offered, but can't remember where. Thanks in advance! I plan to get a couple pics of my P-51 "Detroit Miss" posted this weekend.

RE: Byron Mustang
I got them from Aeroloft..
There a few places that Ive seen offer them..some I think better then others..the nose art and buno#'s were made for me at my request for a few dollars more..most of the other stuff is pretty standard on all P51's and was part of their base package.
Not sure If I would go through them again or not. Id probably try another company the next time just for the sake of trying a different one...
The service was great for me, and Cindy I beleive her name is was really helpful. The sheets dont come with a locator however and Ive had to use instructions from a plastic model to make sure I got it right but alot doesnt cross over so thats kind of annoying, but really no big deal.
Post some pictures..I think Aeroloft may have a decal kit for Detroit Miss..

RE: Byron Mustang
Its rock solid I love it..I got it off of the buy and sell forums..I screwed it to my table with a couple of "L" angles..
I spent all afternoon working but it doesnt seem like much got done..Finished the underside of the chin and added the access doors to the bottom of the plane..also painted the rudder the correct color and did some weathering from the engine cowl back..it really doesnt show up with the flash, just subtle dirt on the panel lines..

RE: Byron Mustang
You are doing such a great job on this project. I have been in RC aircraft since 1978 and I have never seen such dedication to a single aircraft. I guarantee there isn't another Byron 51 out there that will hold a candle to this baby. I love watching this thread.
