RE: Byron Mustang
Thanks for the compliments Fred..
Mark, I use acryllic washes..and sometimes even pastels, and shoot clear over them so it stays..
Ive "worn" some specific areas at this point, but will do the panel lines and rivets on the whole model eventually after I paint on the cowl and black band on the tail and rudder. Nothing major just enough for it to stand out some.
If you dont like something you can remove it with thinner or even windex, and with the flite metal, you can just scotch brite something off if you really wanted to get it back to square 1..I removed some of the details around the hatches in the previous photos as easily as I put them on..(I thought it was overdone) just trial and error until you get the look you want.

RE: Byron Mustang
Ha..thanks Jeff..
Actually the second side went faster then the first once I really got the hang of it..I dont like working with it though as I think its frustrating at times, but one can be pretty handy with it once you get used to it..
Im also going to paint my wing as well except for the airlerons and flaps, as well as the two large stress panels on the bottom..
Stuff is alittle heavy though..

RE: Byron Mustang
Then just think of mine as the 3rd and 4th sides, should go SUPER fast!!!!
Regarding the weight.....yeah its a bit on the heavy side. I have small all composite F-100 EDF that I was going to use the Flite Metal on, right up until i picked up the roll. I know the backing adds a great deal of weight, but still, that is heavy roll of Aluminum.
Buy boy does it look real!

RE: Byron Mustang
Thanks a lot snake. The cockpit you got was for the TF 84" rite. I'm thinking of ordering one. Only problem I have is I have the new version mustang. All the access to the radio gear is through the canopy. Got to figure out how to make the cockpit kit removable if needed.[8D]

RE: Byron Mustang
Im pretty sure it was..I remember I called them and they made a recomendation..Im pretty sure it was for the TF as well..I can check my old receipts..
In my case I dont think you could do anything with the cockpit, but I could easlily make the radio part removeable if it had to be..You would just have to remove the canopy..

RE: Byron Mustang
Started working on my model again now that the holidays are over.
Did the windscreen surround..I didnt realize that I left it too wide on the back side of it..looking at pics of the real plane this is pretty narrow..
Also did the bleed air outlet on the right side (where you see all that black spew on the real ones..) started riveting the right side as well.
Ill probably paint the cowl after a few more FM pieces and simulated access points.

RE: Byron Mustang
Luft G, did you pull another fuse off the Byron? If so ,excellent work. I am selling mine that is currently listed here on RCU. I was surprised at how close the TFGS P51 and the Byron are. I have considered remoing the purr power prop drive unit and installing in a Top Flite kit

RE: Byron Mustang
Ram-bro, Yes I did. first ever, so I learned alot. Finished copy had issues though. Lots of pin holes to fill, and when I joined the two sides I used duct tape to hold them together and pulled the vertical stab too tight and it operlapped and curled. I cut it off at the horizontal stab saddle. For wings and tail fethers I had the Brian Taylor 69" enlarged and am currently cutting parts. Yes the Byron and the TFGS P-51 are close. 85" and 84.5" both Sport Scale because they both deviate from scale. The value of your original kit is with the drive unit and would be very difficult to install in a TFGS, and is a great selling feature. The kit could be built without it by making a plywood box that attached to the ply plate going horizontal under the cockpit using the front end of the box for a motor mount. My Byron is the old one piece wing version. I am buillding my BT wing as a one piece too. I'll try plug in's on the next one. I chose the BT print because the wing mounts the same as the Byron and is more scale. Platt's wing builds the same, but mounts different. More like the TFGS. Well back to making balsa and ply dust.

Thanks. I call what you build Precision Scale. In this R/C world we have at the bottom Fun Scale followed by Sport Scale then Precision Scale. Yours is difinitlay Precision Scale. Mine is what I call SARS or Stand Across the Road Scale Its a blending of all the above. Keep up the good work and keep posting. I neen inspiration.

RE: Byron Mustang
Good question JeffH. I just framed the wing up last night so its not sheeted yet. Your question prompted me to do a trial fit. I was expecting a little gap in the wing saddle ahead of the main spar and that is exactly what I got. When Isheet the wing, I can blend that in. BT plans like the original have the laminar air foil. The thicker part is moved aft. See attached pics.

RE: Byron Mustang
Thanks Jeff. I originally took my old 75" BT plan and blew it up using a scale factor based on the resulting wing span with horrible results. Where the wing mated to the fuselage the wing root was 1 1/4" too big. Wing span was great but it didn't blend into the Byron. In reviewing my old BT BF109E (61")print with the newer BT Bf109E (68") Inoticed lots of improvements to the design. So I took the chance that the same was true on the BT P-51 (69") and ordered them. When I received the newer print and went straight the the wing root where it mates with the fuselage. Found the match at 1.24 x 69" = 85.56" final wing span and a good blend of the two designes where they join. The BT also mounts the same as the Byron design. Note: in the pics, I took the B/C turtle deck from the old 75" and mated those to the Byron. Ihave the TFGS ARF and the wing mounting is alot different. Dont know about the TFGS Kit. I also have the Platt (81") and it mounts like the TF. Good Luck in which ever you choose. Hope my mistakes help you out.
