Default Kellogg's AD5 Skyraider Build

Hi Guys, this thread started under a different name A10 and Skyraider. Warbirdrcer and I decide to make this just a Charlie Kellogg's AD5 Skyraider build. We will be adding to his as often as possible. We would like to have some feedback and other points of view. This building thread will start with the fuselage for my AD5 already under construction. I have been building since January and completed the most fuse and tail feathers in about 3 months. And I don't get much time to work on it so I feel the construction is fast and easy. I will start back on it when the colder weather hits!

It comes with a 12 page instruction manual including a list of things that are needed to complete construction. Construction is all balsa and plywood. The AD5 has a 103†wing span and 80†long fuselage. It has a three piece wing construction so it fits in the car/van. The plane has two piece flaps, dive brake, and bomb releases. I am going to power it with a 3W75iUS. It should weigh around 35-38 pounds. Here is a list of all the accessories, all made by Kellogg Plans for this plane; Fiberglass Cowling; Fiberglass Transition (Behind Cowl); Fiberglass Landing Gear Covers; 150 Gallon Drop Tank Kit; Front Canopy; Rear Canopy; Fiberglass Rear Canopy Frame (Optional For Opening Windows); Mk82 Low Drag 500# Bomb Kit; Construction Photo CD; Vacuum Formed Cockpit Parts and Vacuum Formed Rear Seats. I saw it fly at Delaware...what a sight!

Retracts are available for Serria Presicion. Here is the web site address. Check it out and see the you tube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDGfmvqeP6g) of his plane. http://kelloggplans.com

I will post some photos of my construction tonight.

Default RE: Kellogg's AD5 Skyraider Build

Wow...great timing. I have one of these on my bench as we speak. It purchased it and it was already framed up, but not finished, so I am in the process of finsihing it up. It is a great looking bird, and according to Mr. Kellogg, it is follows the scale outline. I have the Sierra retracts, and they are very impressive. Darryl does a great job, and these are no exception. I also have the Ziroli Skyraider and even though they are different models, both are quite impressive.
Mr. Kellogg is also very good to do business with. I ordered parts (tanks and wheel covers) from him and they arrived within the week. The glass work is excellent and the fit is very good. Perhaps I can get some pics upload this weekend of my bird and you guys can help me out. The plans are to power it with a 3w70, which hopefully will be enough power. Estimated weight is around 36#.
I will be paying extra attention to this thread and look forward to seeing your progress.
Thanks for making it public.

I'm very happy to see this thread started!

I am working on his Avenger right now (a very nice kit, by the way), and my intention is to order one of his AD-5's after I get the Avenger out the door and into the sky.

Will be watching with interest.

Regards,

Noah

Just a few more pixs and my other two warbirds. As you can see an SBD, this is my second Dauntless. The original was featured on the Warbirds Over Delaware DVD cover in 2002. Can't be that long ago, and the SNJ is not flying over Niagara Falls...photoshop does wonders.

butlern,

Glad to see you dropped in. I have been watching the progress on the Kellogg Avenger build thread.

If anyone wants to check out the Avenger builds here is the link to it. I read through it and keep up on what is posted. There are a lot of great builders on there and you can pick up construction and finishing tips for the Skyraider builds.

Welcome fellow Kellogg AD-5 Builders.

SBDdauntless and I want to invite all Kellogg AD-5 current and future builders to this thread. We hope you will take the time to post your Kellogg AD-5 project photos, comments, status, techniques, and finishing plans. Who knows, maybe one day we will fly them together.

Thanks,

WARBIRDRCER

I ordered my AD-5 from Charlie Kellogg on August 13, 2009 and received it on August 18, 2009. The packing job was top of the line, and upon opening the box I found some of the best workmanship in the model industry. Attached are a few photos for your viewing.

Below are photos of the Full Scale AD-5 Skyraider I am modeling my Kellogg AD-5 after. This aircraft is owned by Brent Hisey and based at his museum, "The Oklahoma Museum Of Flying" in Bethany Oklahoma at Wiley Post airport. The photos include one of my flights in the AD-5 with pilot Larry Butler. This day Larry gave me some stick time in the Skyraider flying formation with Brent in his P-51 Mustang Miss America. I must say this was a life treat to fly formation with a P-51 Mustang thanks to my friends Larry and Brent.

I was taking inventory of the center section ribs and spars tonight. I did get all the piece laid out on the plans. BUT, I had to stop to watch the World Champion Phillies beat LA...I hope! I will be starting to glue up the center section tomorrow and will post some pixs of the construction. Everything appears to fit perfectly.

BEAT LA...LETS GO PHILLIES!

Ok started the wing. Laid out the ribs and built the retract box. Here is a couple of pix. I will post more over the weekend. The retract box is really easy to put together and appears to be very strong construction.

SBDdauntless,

Looks great. I had to buy a new ban saw and now I have to set my shop up for wood work. Been trying to complete a few other projects so I can devote my mind and time to this one. Will be starting soon. Here is a few pics of my 1/4 scale Stearman project myself and a friend are finishing up the build on. As soon as I have the controls moving I will disassemble and prep for covering.

DogFly,

Nice job on the skyraider...I LIKE IT! I have the ParkZone Corsair. Great fun to fly.
Thanks for the links. Just taking a break from building. My plan is to work on the wing a lot today.
Rainy day means building day! Hope to post more pixs later today.

Ok, Have been working on the wing from 11AM to 5PM. I completed a lot of construction on the wing skeleton.
I got the dihedral set, landing gear box, spar pieces for outer wing glued in, one of the sheeting pieces,
light ply spars cut for the center section, 1/4 square leading edge, wing tube/sleeve all installed or prepped.
Not bad for 6 hours...I guess! Here are a few more photos.

If it rains again tomorrow.....MORE BUILDING!!!!!

SBDdauntless.

All looks good. I have been in the model shop most of the day trying to finish up more small projects to get my wood cutting started. The park zone does look good. I may do that to my PZ T-28 also. Say DogFly can you give me some tips on the mods and if you changed the CG and if so to where. Say if you guys get a chance check out my WARBIRD 2010 Fly-In link. You can see some of the projects I have been talking about.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the positive responses!
I was a little hesitant to post foam on a balsa thread, but for me it's about planes!
Here's a link to the thread i did on RCG: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1112153
I shortened the stock PZ fuse by 1", but since I had to add spacers to the motor, 3/4" would work fine.
Also, when the nose is removed, add some foam to the inside, I removed a fair amount to get the shape right.
I also used Callie_Graphics! and parkflyerplastics!

OK. The one side of the wing skeleton is complete. Next step is to sheet the bottom of the wing.

Now here is where I NEED SOME IDEAS!!!!!!

I am going to put 6 bombs on the outer wing panel. I am trying to do this wthout spending $50 in bomb release mechanisms. I would like to do is using bell cranks and push rods. If possible have three drop first them the other three on the next pass. If I can get that then just the three outer bombs to release. Keep in mind they are approx 8-10 inch bombs made of fiberglass.

HELP!!!!! ANY IDEAS OUT THERE!!!!

use a retract servoe and a 3 position switch on the transmitter. That way you can salvo them off as you see fit. What scale is the AD5? Ia m wondering if the cowl would fit a Zirolli kit and if it is actually more scale in size and depth?

Thanks for the info. Any ideas on how to run the cables and release to drop the bombs? The Skyraider I am building the the AD5 from Kellogg Plans. If you want more info check out is web sites at kellogplans.com. I don't know the difference between his and Ziroli. Send him and email and he will get you the dims. There are pixs above for warbirdrcer and some on mine on the front of the plane...any help?

Any illustrations on the bomb idea would also help!

SBDdauntless,

Did you figure out the bomb drop yet. Let me know what you come up with.
I spent the weekend clearing my shop and completing the first part of our fall clean-up. (Honey Dos) I did assemble my saw stand and set-up my saw. I am now ready to start cutting parts now. With the holidays coming up I hope to have a lot of the cutting work completed.
Keep me posted on your project.

Say do you have your retracts yet?

It all starts here!

I have come up with an idea for the bomb releases. Hope this illustration gives you an idea of what I am thinking. I will post some photos of the building steps. I have been working on the wing off and on this week. I have been putting together sheets of balsa for the wing skin. I will take some photos tomorrow of the progress I have made on the wing. LOTS OF SANDING and watching the World Series....GO PHILLIES!!!!!!

SBDdauntless,

I like the bomb release idea. Keep me informed of how it works. I now have my plans on the work bench and getting ready to start cutting parts for my wing sections.[8D] Running slow right now, had a touch of something today that kept me home from work. It is now 2:30 AM and I woke-up this morning with another touch of something. Hope it is not the start of a flu bug. [&o]

A new project takes a lot of pre-work related stuff. Here is one more shot of my latest progress.
