The last few days have been busy, and not all on the Hurricanes. I did get the stab saddles epoxied to the crutches, and then began cutting out the trim tabs on the second set of elevators. Imagine my surprise, as I compared it to the first set of elevators, and then to pictures, and found I'd cut the first elevator trim tabs in the wrong place! A full rib bay out. I had to pull off the solartex, cut out the trailing edge of the elevators between the ribs, rebuild them, and then cut them out again! Not what you see in builds by the pros! Oh, well. Puts me in my place.

Thanks for the kind words Kelly. I've been watching your BT Spit build, as I've got a couple in the build queue, and your bird is looking great.

Greetings everyone, sorry for the absence from building. Lots of stuff going on, work, play, some home repairs. I've been waiting until the tail feathers were almost done so I could route pushrods before I closed in the fuse structure with all those stringers. I've got the elevator pushrod ready - it's a four foot carbon fiber tube with a 4-40 solder clevis on one end and I'll put a ball link on the servo end. I'll be using a tiller bar for the rudder cables, which should allow me to keep the big servos up front and the rudder cables back by the wing mount plate. Here are some pix.

Hey Sam, is your tailwheel mechanism from Darrell a 1/6 scale unit? I got mine the other day and was overjoyed with it. Seems like the wire going into it is 1/8", and of course I couldn't find a nosewheel steering block and control arm at the LHS. Is yours the same? Or, is it a 5/32" wire that goes into it?

Mike,
The tailwheel units use 5/32" wire. I'm pretty sure it's listed as a 1/5 scale unit.

Thanks Sam. Good to know. It's a really nice unit..perfect size honestly. I got the smaller one offered, so I'll take a better look at the wire again before I get a steering block for it. Would seem logical that it's 5/32 though. Gonna be a tight fit to mount the steering block under the stab on the Mossy, so want to get something low profile.

I've been distracted from building by lots of other activities, some fun and some not! Here are some pix of the rudder tiller bar. I plan on using a carbon fiber rod to connect it to the rudder servo.

Interesting method for the laminated firewall, looks good and strong. I've not had to deal with an imbedded carb yet. I'm wondering if final carb tweeking is an issue and how one would go about it.

Edwin,
The carb needles "should" be accessible via a small hole on the underside behind the cowl. I'll get the motor dialled in close on a stand and then with cowl off. Then with cowl on, I should only have to make very minor adjustments. Well, that's the plan anyway!

I figured you had the access all thought out. I'm sure I'll need to do that in the future sometime, I just hadnt given it much thought.

I haven't started the wings yet, as I have taken a break from the Hurri's while learning about electricty and 500 size helicopters with my younger son. However, I've cleared off the workbench and will start back in, as soon as I figure out where I left off! I was examining the tail again and think I was thinking about trying once more to build one using Brian Taylor's technique. Then after a closer examination of the exisiting tail, I said "NAH"!. Good to go. Time to kick on with this build!
Also, I got a call from Kelvin at www.keleo-creations.com. My second Hurricane's exhaust is almost done...

An Early Happy New Year to All! I got my second Hurricane exhaust from Kelvin and have spent some time the last few days fitting it to the second engine. I've put a new sheet of builderboard on my table and will finish up the tail surfaces and then work on the fuses. Here's a pic of both engines:
Well, I'd post a pic but the system seems to be down.....

I currently have 3W-50i's. Sometime down the road if the right deal comes along and the right finances are in place I may opt for 3W-55i's, since the exhausts would bolt on and there would be a bit more power. I'm really going to try to make these light as possible.

Hey daddy!
Happy to see another Vailly Hurricane going together. You may recall I have the Hurricane that can't be landed. In fact, I still have it hanging in the rafters. I tried to fly it again a couple of years ago and same problem; broken wing on landing. I wish you luck and happy landings!! I hope it is just me as I actually have seen a Vailly Hurricane landed on You Tube. It is doable, apparently. Mine is powered with a 3W-60 and I would not call it overpowered. Of course, mine weighs about 34lbs. Best of luck!!

Hi LA7,
I sure do remember you and your Hurricane! I'm really hoping to come in under 25 lbs on this bird. I was wondering about your plane - did you build in a few degrees of washout in the wings? I've looked at the plans but can't find where they mention the washout, but according to Roy it should have it. I'm thinking 1-2 degrees. I've seen that Hurricane on YouTube also. It seems to really move and it has a Quadra 52 and weighs (I think) over 30lbs.
Any advice you can give will be appreciated.

LA7

Didn't the problem occur because the elevator wasn't allowing you to flair or was it the lack of washout? I have a bundle of sticks in a box called a Valley Hurricane and it will be my next build. Sam encouraged me to buy it so I am studying his build. Any info would help all of us who admire this plane. Cheers

Enjoying following the builds here, very nice work. Has anybody had success installing non-rotating retracts (ie Shindin) and having everything line up and sit correctly? Would be interested in details of mounting angles and door actuation etc.
