RE: ESM 82
I removed the bottom half of the TW mount so the two elevator pushrods can clear it. I cut out a new mount for my TW with an opening for the elevator pushrods. I mounted the TW to the mount with a spring to take any shock and a control arm with a Nyrod for steering. After I set up the two elevator pushrods and the elevator horns I will glue in the new Mount.

My Hurri
My plane weighs in at 19.4 lbs. I had to add about 2 lbs to the nose. I have a saito 180 with an APC 16 x 10 which pulls it great in level flight, but when you try to do a loop, you better have some good speed going into that loop. The gun lights are really nice and bright leds. They came from a company called SM services in England. They are a big hit at the field. I put in working landing lights that come on when the gear is dropped. They are little cheapo lights you can buy here: http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/ram/ram16.htm I use my flight pack to power everything including both the landing lights and the gun lights. I am using one 2300 mah A123 battery pack to operate everything except the on board glow which runs on a single cell 5000mah nimh battery. All the servos are hitec 645. The gear are from sierra. They rotate which is really nice, and thank God I got those because I've bounced this baby a number of times and I am sure the ESM retracts would have bent. Sierra's are built like a tank. I originally had V3 electrics, but they crapped out on me during the build, so I bit the bullet and bought the sierras. The air tank is in that big fat wing which is nice when putting her together. The plane flies really nice and scale. My only issue is that this plane will climb at a 45 degree angle when you go WOT. To counter act that I put in 3 extra degrees of downthrust and mixed down elevator to throttle. Without those two changes it was a bear to bring her in for a low high speed pass. You had to push really hard to keep her level. I also modified the pull pull set ups. I didn't like the "wires through the tubes" thing, so I positioned the servos in the center, one over the other with the wires going straight back without guide tubes.
I am thinking of getting the rear exhaust gasser over the winter. I just don't want to cut up that cowl -- it's so narrow and cutting it up ruins the scale look.

Al, how much does the Saito weigh? Using the DLE might mean less lead....always a good thing.
Question - do you have figures on how much down trim you need in elevators for each step of flap? AND, how does it land??

When deploying flaps, I don't see a noticeable change in pitch. At that point I am throttling back and getting ready to land, so there is no mixing that coincides with flap deployment. It's when I am flying the plane. If I trim it for level flight at let's say 1/3 throttle, and then go wide open throttle, the plane will climb dramatically. We usually fly about 3 or four of us together, and we are pretty much at full throttle for the entire flight. Without the mix and thrust adjustment, i had to hold down elevator to stay level. I had to put the mix in because if I didn't, when it came time to land and I throttled back there would have too much down trim in the elevator(if I trimmed for level flight at wide open throttle). The plane isn't terribly hard to land. She'll fly at a low speed pretty good, but to get a great looking scale landing you have to come in with a little power and speed. If you don't get it just right when she touches down she'll bounce back up in the air a lot. Actually this is my first warbird so I am a rookie learning the ropes right now.

Thanks Al, very good information. I also have this model that I will assemble over the winter and Sierra's are going into mine as well. I like that little bit of rotation that keeps the gear covers in the correct positions. Power will be a DLE 35 rear exhaust. I haven't decided yet how scaled up it will be, might do that after I fly her for a bit.
Cheers,
Andy

bought Sierras for the Vailley Aviation big Hurricane I'm building, cant afford them for the small one too LOL..guess I'm stuck with the gear doors being tilted in about 15 deg when down... draggy but can't be helped..
I'm taking the same approach with detail. IIF (if it flies) there's lot can be done.. Stanford- Tuck's plane wasn't pristine so I don't want mine to be..

Mine becomes less pristine and weathered everytime I take it to the field. busted canopy, bent axles. Trashed the plastic wheels that comes with the kit. I wouldn't use those (if you land like I do at least). I had to put some aluminum wheels on. Literally cracked the plastic wheel in half. Luckily it fell off in the pit area. Also dead sticked it once into the bean field, but got real lucky and practically zero damage. That Saito sucks fuel and if I don't watch my time, or if I don't land on the first or second pass, then I'm flying on fumes. Still it's a fun plane to fly.

Those aluminum hubbed esm wheels are sweet. I would have purchased some but at the time they were out of stock. I won't sell my kids for a set of retracts, but maybe the wife??????????????????????????????????? The DLE 35 is a very nice engine. My flying buddy has his on a PC-21 and it is a perfect match. That or if I can find a nice used zdz 40 I think would be ideal. Anyone know where to get some gun sounds for the leds? Just for kicks I velcroed a standard plastic playground whistle (with the little ball removed) to the bottom of my wing, and it surprised the crap out of everyone at the field. Not scale at all, but was pretty cool nevertheless. Actually that might be scale sound if you have a P51 or a Corsair I think.

and an attack by an "allie" at that... might have been acceptable if it had been a Bf109 or FW 190.... but a Jug for pete's sake. Can't those Yanks with their great honkin chunks of iron fly??
