RE: ESM 82
The wheel wells on this plane are very large and will require a new plastic filler piece to make it look presentable. Plus if you are running glow I figure you would not want to fill the wheel wells with oil. So I am making some new vac-formed pieces to fit the Sierra Giant Scale gear with the proper rotation angles. The mold starts with taping a water soaked piece of ply to the bottom of the wing to pick up the curve. Then the mold is backed up on to that ply. Pieces for the gear door ledge and the wheel well are added to the mold. Finally it is vacuum formed and trimmed. Looks pretty good. I used .040" styrene. I need to get some .020" material to make the final part. I will make the other side mold tomorrow. Leo

fockewulf37.
Any chance you could get me the dims clear for this plane ?
I'm looking at a 50CC engine 26cc just sounds kinda weak, considering guys use that engine on the 72" version
Here are the dims of the engine I'm looking at
Center of crank to top of sparkplugcap:
140mm/5,51"
Minimum lenghts af stand-off needed to clear fins of firewall:
8mm/0,32"
Lenght from backside of propeller(!) to back of cooling fins:
136mm/5,35"
Wideness of carburator with intake furnel to centerline of engine:
118mm/4,65"

Then going by those dimensions a DLE 55 would be a great fit for this plane , anyone ? any thoughts ?

mounted in most of my office interior in the last few days , once I fitted in the bigger fuel tank for the 200Ti
things have started to progress a little faster ( after getting over the school holidays & work commitments ).
Just have a few more details As in some of the round frame work some trim wheels etc & i'll be happy with it,Also need to get some matching dark green paint !!.

I finished up the second wheel well mold. First photo is a method for casting the curve off the bottom of the wing to make the base of the mold. Second shows finished tools. Third is some roughly trimmed parts in place. I am now shipping my center section back to Darrell with the gear installed. He is going to finalize the cam rotation features of the gear and then offer them for sale. I need to finish an instruction sheet for this gear installation kit and then I will be offering these for sale as well. Leo

My TBM 82" Hurricane flew this past weekend. Used stock retracts and with 3 rather hard landings, they are still attached firmly to the wings.
The Saito 180 is plenty of power and it'll fly at half throttle all day long.
Nice plane and looks great in the air.

Dick,
Nice shots. Congratulations on your maiden flight!
Did you get a weight on your finished Hurricane? What's your plan going to be on adding the wheel pants? Also is there a particular set-up issue that has lead to the hard landings or is that just the pilot? I'd like to avoid the hard landings on mine when I get it going if at all possible.

It weighs 16 pounds 1 ounce including the 2.5 pounds of lead in the nose.
It seemed to keep flying and not slow down but the stock gear held up just fine.
I have no plans to add the fairings since the retracts do not rotate. Yes, I can get the rotating ones from Sierra but they would double the cost of the kit and all I was reviewing was the stuff from TBM, and not any external vendors.

Somewhere in the pile of Hurricane posts someone said the stock non-rotating gear door setup causes a pitchdown but that it can be managed with the available elevator authority. So I'm going with the stock setup and plan on dialing elevator to gear mix once I determine how much elevator deflection is needed. Then there is the flap issue, which will require flap to elevator mixing. Obviously both of these configurations will drive the need for more power on final probably all the way to touchdown, which is not a bad setup as I recall what Dick said about it "not slowing down". Yes, my first flight will involve a lot of safe altitude data gathering. I will share the results.
In a related note, Vally has a great "Hurricane Landing Techniques" PDF on his site and in his article he points out the Hurricane's nose-low approach attitude and flap usage guidelines. Its well worth checking out as the material most-likely will apply to these smaller Hurricane models as well.

This video shows the Hurricane flying with the undercarriage down and up with no noticeable trim changes.

Excellent, thank you Sir. Good work on the sticks, it shows the stock gear/door set up to be a very manageble affair. I noticed about 30 degrees of flap on the landing, which also looked very manageble. The gasoline 1.80 seemed to pull the model through the maneuvers very well. I'm looking forward to flying this model, the last Hurricane I had was a Mick Reeves 80" version 20 years ago. The biggest gripe I had with that model was endlessly having to tell people "no its not a Spitfire". Seemed at the time, to most, anything with a roundel on it was a Spitfire.

RE: ESM 82
The engine is the Saito FG36 ( the gas version of the 2.20), I use as much flap as possible for landing which is usually about 70 degrees+

RE: ESM 82
I originally took mine off as they caused a bad pitch down on landing. I have since increased my flaps to as much as possible and put the gear doors back on. It's fine now and lands great. If you don't get enough flap the plane will float badly and never land
The thick wing is very effective and keeps the plane in the air at very low speeds. The flaps just make this worse unless they are extended past 60 degrees and act more like speed brakes on the plane. Works great now.
Jeff

Thanks Jeff, that's great news. My flaps are rigged to deploy to 85 degrees, which I think is what the 1:1 scale version used.
Kinverflyer, thanks for the correction.
Sorry about the huge image guys, I tried in vain to delete it. I have to get a checkout on how to post photos before I do that again.

Nice cockpit, Ty.
Update on my Hurricane. With everything installed and lots of nose weight, it weighs 17 pounds exactly.
That's with a Saito 180 and almost 3 pounds of lead!

Does anyone recommend an SC180 for this plane?...or OS200S..???
Thankyou
