Clues 2 and 4 are incorrect. The Lockheed U-2 family are tail-draggers and are still in service, still flying missions over hostile territory. The Lockheed YO-3 had retractable main gear. Otherwise, a good choice for a quiz subject since it's one of the more obscure of modern U.S. types. Here's a photo of a preserved example that happens to reside about 30 miles north of me in the Museum of Flight at Boeing field in Seattle. I'll give a bit of thought to the next question and post it later tonight.

Name this warbird

1. Only one built, it is presumed to have been scrapped.

2. During this warbird's short life, the company that built it was absorbed by another company that is still in business today.

Hounding, I don't think thats the answer...The A2J did not fly until 1952,and the ensigns(stars) on the aircraft shown has pre 1943 stars.... To me its something from North American and a lumber company .

2. During this warbird's short life, the company that built it was absorbed by another company that is still in business today.

3. It had a normal crew of three, and a defensive armament of nine .30 cal. machine guns. The guns were probably never installed in the prototype.

4. Pre-war design.

None of the guesses thus far are particularly close.

5. Today, the name of the company that designed and built this warbird is associated with one other, far more famous airplane, many of which still fly.

OK.....I think I've come up with one....
1) This AC was part of an expedited program to counter another countries advanced development.
2) Somewhere between 10 and 50 were produced

Thanks, CB. The quotation marks on "twin engine" got me thinking about mixed-power airplanes. Several have been proposed over the years, a few actually got built but very few indeed ever saw double-digit production. The few that did had brief service lives because the development of the jet engine progressed so rapidly in it's early days.

Looking for the name of a fighter pilot. This shouldn't last long.

1. This pilot and his wingman combined for 15 aerial victories in one mission.

2. When this pilot returned home after this mission, his engine quit at the end of his landing roll-out because he was out of fuel. Of the 2000+ rounds of ammunition he took off with, only 2 rounds were left when he landed.

3. He achieved "Ace-in-a-day" status not once, but twice, something no one else from his country ever did.

Rene' Fonck scored 6 kills twice, 9 May and 26 Sept 1918
Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer scored 5 kills on 25 May 1944 and 9 more on 21 Feb 1945 flying at night
David McCambell scored 7 kills on 19 June and 9 more on 24 Oct 1944 but these were all poorly trained Japanese pilots
Hans Wind scored 5 or more kills in a day FIVE TIMES IN TWELVE DAYS for 30 of his 75 kills
