Tom it Looks like the same stuff i used .Glad to hear you had no problems with even coverage. that means on mine the problem is the painter not the paint

Took advantage of the rare warmish sunny evening in Seattle to shoot a partial coat of primer on the fuse. The Warbird Colors sprays pretty well using a Harbor Freight detail gun. I always like this part. It's fun seeing it all in one color for the first time, even if it does highlight how much work is left to perfect the finish prior to painting. Updated: The WBC primer dries pretty quick. I was able to turn the plane and shoot the other side after about an hour.

Thanks, Bob. I'm pretty clever with the camera to try to hide all the runs and hickeys that I have to fix later. If Chris were here doing the painting we wouldn't have half the problems but he's all busy getting his diploma for a masters degree this weekend and trying to figure out a wedding. His troubles are just beginning. Edited: I meant to say marital bliss is about to begin.

Tom,
You're almost 50% done now - can you see the light at the end of the tunnel?
Give Chris our sympathies, uh I mean our congrats. for both accomplishments.

Hi all,
Just thought I'd drop in and thank everyone for keeping this thread alive and thriving.
Tom, yes I have a Mustang now (1st one), but I still have far more Corsairs. Two are flight ready, a third is in storage, only needing a fresh battery and the the Saito .91 re-installed. And then there are several in various stages up building.
Of the 2 that are ready, one is my Top Flite finsihed as a U.S.S. Bennington based 'Pine Tree 1' F4U-1D, which I built a few of years ago and which is pictured in some of the posts.
I AM doing an upgrade to it today: I am switching radios to my new Futaba 10C 2.4 GHz. Turns out it was an easy swap, because the 10C can take date stored from a 9C COMPac memory module and convert it for use in the 10C. The COMPac can then be inialized and used to store 10C data on it, which means I can then use the COMPac as a backup. COOL!
BTW, I was already using all 9 channels on the 9CAP, since all 3 wheels retract, 2 are for flaps, and it has dual Vortac bomb drops.
So, as of today, all 3 of my ready to fly warbirds are on 2.4 GHz. Which means, hopefully I'll never get shot down again (lost my H-9 Hellcat due to some *sshole turning on his Tx while I was flying)

Does anyone know of a website that sells small linial actuators? I'm working on an idea but first I must find the mechanical part before I can see if my idea will work.

RE: 1/8 scale TopFlite Corsair Mods
Hi There guys,
Getting into my first Corsair build, always loved the plane but was never good enough to build/fly it. Great forum, but i do not think I will get this detailed. The main thing I wanted to do was panel lines and rivets. It might be in here but I do not want to spend the time to read through 40+ pages of posts to find out what you guys use. I am not a master builder by any means so what do you suggest. Thanks in advance for any help.

Cimara,
Those are in line of what I was looking for. I don't think these will work for RC plane use though because they have an input voltage of 10 to 14 volts. Thank you though for the suggestion. I'll keep that page bookmarked in case I come across a situation where I need something like that. FInding an electronic actuator is becoming harder than I though. If all else fails, I'll just go with a regular servo.

Hi Dreamingtree1027,
First of all I don't think there is anything on finishing her on this forum. However, you won't have to look far. First of all, Tom Pierce has a wonderful set of pages on finishing the complete bird from start to finish. I think you can pick up a number of tips from his pages;
http://www.tompierce.net/190/html/paint.htm
These pages are not on a Corsair, so there will be a few differences. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Thanks a lot kit is on its way. I lucked out and found a gold ed kit, robart pneumatic retracts, tail wheel retract, cockpit kit, and dummy radial engine for $200 plus shipping! Ican't wait to get it! I am obviously ahead of myself with rivets and stuff but it is something I really want to do.

I think that the filling and sanding after the first coat of primer is the ugliest possible part of a model's lifecycle. Here is mine in the now famous "oops the period came early" camouflage scheme. After curing for about 2 weeks, the WBC primer did sand pretty well with 220 dry. It didn't need to cure that long, but in the summer other things take priority.

RE: 1/8 scale TopFlite Corsair Mods
Question,
I need to know how much the maximum deflextion is of the cowling's cooling flaps when in the fully open position. Can anybody help me? Here they are set at 45 degrees but it is too much I'm sure. I reduced it to 35 now but don't know if I should go down to 30 degrees. The 2nd picture is at 35 degrees. I would like to know the true scale amount and I can't find it anywhere.
Please respond!

CorsairJock,
Thanks, thats all I needed. The drawing shows about 25 degrees of deflextion. I tried 20 and it looked much better. Now I'll make a jig for 25 and that will be where they will be set when fully open.

Gibbs,
Lookin' good!! Keep her going!
I took a good look at my fuse the other day. Glad I did. I discovered that the left wing bolt block had actually been knocked loose during the crash. I glued it back in, but wasn't happy with the results, so I cut it off, cleaned out the cutout where it sits, and have another one about ready to glue into place. Then drill and tap the bolt hole and she'll be as good as new. Probably will get her back to the field the first weekend in August.

RE: 1/8 scale TopFlite Corsair Mods
Hi there guys,
I am starting a corsair and looking for one to model. I want to model something that flies today in airshows. Like a restored corsair. I like the red and white checkerboard on the cowl are there any planes flying today with that on them? Just can't decide where to go. Thanks for any help, I do not have the extensive collections and knowledge that most of you have so I appreciate you sharing!

The Kalamazoo Air Zoo is home to the Corsair that you are refering to. However, it is no longer flown: they no longer fly ANY of their warbirds.

Here are 2 photos of it. The 1st one is one that I took, with my DynaFlite Corsair sitting in the forground. The 2nd is an Air Zoo file photo

Well would you mind if I did one similar to that? I am not as big of a fan of weathering and dirtying up the planes as some may be, although it does look cool, I am going for a restored factory finish. Did you paint the checkerboard or use monokote. Either way nice bird.
Thanks again, if anyone knows of a flying corsair around the Midwest I would love to model it. Thanks again for any help.

CorsairJock,
After blowing up the drawing of the front of the Corsair it turned out to be exactly 30 degrees of deflextion when fully open. Thanks again.
DreamingTree1027,
I don't believe there are any Corsairs flying in the Midwest except when they have the EAA Oshkosh Fly In and Air Show. They have several every year. It is on July 28th and ends August 3rd. With the gas prices I probably won't be able to go. I might sneak up there anyway so I can get some up close and personal looks at the planes I love so much. They have a bunch of P-51 and other Warbirds. Look up EAA Oshkosh Fly In and Air Show for further information.
