I just got my P-40!! [img][/img]..I'm powering mine with a DLE 55 ..I'm looking for servo recomendations
Thanks

Spektrum 6020s Same price as a 5645 and much better servo. Tighter gear set also. Any plane can benefit from a good digital servo.

If you want to go overboard and spend more money, than go digital. Takes more battery power in the long run. Each to his own.

I dont want to go overboard...I just didnt want a "weak link" I have always used digitals in my aerobatic planes ..I am not opposed to using analog servos...They seem to be what most are using... I am thinking of using a4200 NiMh 6 volt (should be ok with those servos) or LiFe Batteries?

Hitec 645 are $32 and 5645 are $45 from tower and the Spektrum 6020s are $45 from Horrizon. Both servo have nearly the same specs. As a user of 645s and 5645s for years, I've never been all that happy with them. I now have 8 or 9 of them sitting in a draw. I only use them for flaps and maybe a tailwheel / rudder. They do not center very well IMO.

As for the batteries, I would run two 2000mah Nimh with two switches. A 4200 would be over kill.

Also, you can use them in a aerobatic plane if the unthinkable happens.

I would like to state for the record, that this bird will fit inside a 2010 Ford Fusion, through a series of carefully choreographed moves.

Just unpacked my new TF P-40. Quality looks to be quite good. Had a broken canopy which will be replaced by TF when they have stock. A question about the flaps. They seem to be quite flexible and do not fit the trailing edge of the wing. There is about a 1/4" gap. This appears to be the result of the flap being too deep at the front which does not allow it move up as far as it should. Has anyone else experience this and what have you done about it? I am considering redoing the flaps, with a carbon fiber plywood lamination, to make them stiffer and thinner so that they match the trailing edge of the wing.

Anyone running a DL55 with a 3 Bladed Prop on this bird? I'm waiting for mine to arrive, have the engine already and would like to give this combo a try if it will work and look half decent. Any input would always be helpful.

I was the design engineer and chief pilot on this project. The plane was flown with the DLE 55 and an APC 20x12 prop for most of our testing. Though we did not fly it on a 3 blade prop I do not believe you will have any issue with one. On the 2 blade prop we had very good speed and vertical performance. More than you would expect if you were looking for scale performance. The exception might be if you are flying at a higher altitude such as in the Denver area. Of course you will need a different spinner since we included a spinner for a 2 bladed prop. Go for it and give it a try!

JIMKIM;

Thanks for the info; APC 20X12?, DLE Specs call for 22x8, 22x10, 23x8, 23x10.

What have other guys been running on their P-40/DLE55 set ups?

Hellcat716;

Those are 2 Blade prop sizes right? What Brand/Material did you use?

Cock Pit Kit - I have this beautiful bird on the way. I really want to go all the way here. Does anyone know of a "custom cockpit" that one could find? I did post a link to a site that might work. Looks like these are custom for Yellow & Ziroli P-40s....1/5 scale

http://www.dbalsa.com/cockpits/p40.htm

Do you think this would fit?

On a side note - If any of you do this type of work & / or know someone who does I'd be more than happy to pay for this. I am not the "artistic" type.

I have used one of these before in an Yellow AT 6, they are nice.
Not sure if the P 40 one will fit or not.

While were talking and asking about Standoffs, I have DLE55 that I do not have any Standoffs; I would also like to know what length of Standoffs, I would think the same size would work for either the DA 50 or DLE 55.

Thanks, Doug.

The distance from firewall to the prop washer is 6 7/8" ... I'm pretty sure that's a 3" standoff, but I'd measure your engine. I don't have a DA or DLE so I can't het a measurement. Going to unbox the plane later today. :-)

Prop Chief - If you could get the measurement once you open I would REALLY appreciate it. I do not have plane till' mid next week. I want to order the DA-50-R so I need to make sure.......

Use the 2.5" stand offs if the distance from the firewall to the back of the spinner (front of cowl) is 6.7" or less. If the measurement is over 6.7" use the 3" stand offs.

I read this takes a 1/5 size pilot in the specs.
But is this a FULL pilot or a PILOT BUST, cant seem to tell in the pictures.

Thanks for the help.

I used the following pilot:
http://figures.favorjoy.com/
Then click on RAF Flight Lt Donald on right side. He is 12" tall full figure, 1/6 scale and fits perfectly with his boots remaining on. He has short pants but my wife nicely added legs to make long pants. He has helmet, life vest, parachute, gloves, watch, cigarettes, mapthe works. $80 no shipping. I did take 3/8" off the TF seat to lower him and put in some soft balsa filler for more secure fastening. He sits on his chute.
I mounted the DLE 55 with the standoffs that came with it. Can't measure them right now since cowl in on temporarily. More later.

akleader - The manual specs the distance from the front of the firewall to the front of the prop hub at 6 7/8". The only engine that I have is a ZDZ 50NG. If you need a measurement for a ZDZ 50NG I'll be glad to work that up. From DA's website, the DA 50 is 3.82" from the front of the prop hub to the rear of the mount lug so a 3" standoff would be correct to get you some clearance for the spinner/cowl gap. I beleive it's the same for a DLE 55.

If you mount a DA 50 you need 3 inch standoffs, fits great but will need to do small cutout for manifold portion of muffler if using slimline
