Default ZIROLI P-47 Warhorse almost ready for more Sorties

I bought this built and simi repaired late this winter,
Looks like someone originally did a very nce built with panel lines/rivets, etc., Somehow the gear got riped out and it was repaired. (when I got it)
To add insult to injury, my Son knocked it over in the basement and broke the fin [:@]

I added some quick Invasion stipes to cover the wing repairs and am just about ready to Re-maiden it.
I added more Rudder deflection, because it has almost none, and the last thing is to Firm up the elevator linkage to make it more air worthy

If it flys well this season, and I like it. I'll do a complete re-scheme over the winter

Question for those that have flown this bird, this one doesn't have flaps, what sort of landing bad habits might I expect?

Well after having too much going on this summer I finially got this in the air on Sunday,, it tracked, took off and flew great once trimmed,, Too fast with the 2.4 and a 20-10 prop, but cruised nicely around 1/23/4 throttle. The problem came when I landed,, set up nice, had good speed and was set up for a nice tail high wheel landing,, as soon as she touched the left gear block failed Again.

Lesson learned,, Never trust someone you don't know is going to do a proper repair or Build in the first place. After examining the setup now that it's ripped open. It looks like the guy who built it used too soft and too thin a wood for the Rails, and then he countersunk the gear to weaken the wood even further. He tried to make of for it with a small ply reinforcement plate, but it didn't spread the load to all but just under the gear plate between 2 ribs.

Anyway, I opened it all up, but I don't have a set of the Ziroli plans and I am curious how he actaully designed it,, I'm sure this isn't right. Anyone have a set of these plans they can take a picture of the gear mount area and posted it or email it to me?

Thanks

Well after finding some build articles I saw the gear rails were built the way the plans called so I rebuilt both sides with Ply instead of solid.

I had a nice flight in today. Was going to fly again but my Rudder servo was acting funny. It was very slow in one direction, normal speed the other way,, Never seen a servo act this way before,, so it's going in the box with the other retired servos.

I do wish the plane had flaps,, landing is a little fast for my liking,, I guess I'll get the knife and saw back out

edit,
Put a few more flights on the plane this weekend, It flies OK, It is impressive looking in the air, The guys at the field love it, It's a pilot skill tester on landing, that's for sure.
I guess I'll have to fly it more to get comfortable with it's characteristics before I decide if I love it or not,, at this point it like kissing your sister.

Vic,
I have 5 flights since the gear blocks broke and I repaired it. I need to test moving the CG up a bit, it a little pitchy when it slows down. I'll be cutting flaps into it for sure

I got a few more flights in over previous weekend, I'm starting to feel it.
This Saturday I went out and as I was rolling out on the take off run I let off the Elevator too much, nosed over a little and splintered the prop, unfortuantly I lighted it off and had to nurse the plane round and set it down OK. Put a new prop on and took it up for another Great flight, I'm liking it now that I'm getting comfortable with it Heavy Metal flight characteristics.

3rd flight I go to roll out and suddenly no Rudder, It turns out when I did that little go around the vibration caused the rudder servo horn screw to loosen up and fall off. It was a real blessing in disguise because while I had the wing off I noticed the #2 bulkhead, where the wing dowel goes into, had cracked loose from the sheeting, actually the sheeting had cracked all the way up to the firewall in a spot too.

I hate dowels to hold wings on just for this reason, way to much stress on some 1/8" light ply,,, I'm pretty sure if that rudder servo screw hadn't come loose the next flight would have been this plane's Last

Well I did repair the firewall and all last year and took it out again a few times last season,, the last day I broke the tailgear wire on landing. I then had it up for sale and actually had it sold, but the guy backed out of the deal. I was so pissed after completely stripping the plane of the engne and servos I desided it must be meant to stay with me,,, so

Over the winter I installed a Robart retractable tail wheel assembly, it's operated by a hitec 5645 that is slowed down to 10% speed (as slow as they go),, looked so cool I desided to replace the Air system with Lado actuators I bought from MagnumRC. I did that work today, and it was very easy to convert them myself,, the whole process too less than an hour. Also looks very cool with about a 15 second cycle time,, slightly offeset.

I'll try and get a few flights in later this week if the weather cooperates,, Still haven't repainted it, but there's always time for that over next winter

Up date on this plane, I flew it several times last year and a few this year so far,, had a nice day yesterday at our warbird fly in. After many comments, I'm leaving it in it's war-weary patina

Lucky someone snapped some shots,, since I never do

Not sure if everyone can view the video, but give it a try http://www.facebook.com/video/video....17727034909590

The Ziroli 70" p-47 took a dead stick a while back. It needed some body work from previous incidents anyway, cracked canopy etc. It's in the paint shop now.

FYI, thanks to Callie Graphic for redoing the girl decal,,, looks much better

BTW, chose to try the Rustoleum Forest green, just use primer grey fo the bottom, flat white for the tail,, Matte finish to seal the graphics and knock down the shinny vinyl,, I'm pretty happy with the finish.

After reading thru your thread I feel like I watched the story of a real plane fighting its way thru WW2. It definitely has some cool stories, and adventures.. You seem to do great repair work , and re-finishing as well.

Update and Warning,,
After having the plane out ot the flied a few times, That Krylon Clear Matte is not fuel proof against gasolene, It doesn't take it off, but the gas softens and changes the sheen after it dries. I don't recommend using it for wet fuel planes,, I'll be adding systems3 Clear at some point
