RE: CARF F4U-1 Corsair build thread

Hi Gary, I read about the Rainbow tronics for the Moki engines. My understanding is that it's only for the 150. The high voltage ignitions for the 215, 250 , and 400 are the old Moki design and the only difference from the original is that they can use high input voltage. I know that you're running a 215 in the Carf Corsair and got confused when I read that you got a new ignition for it. Having said that, have you run the new Moki ignition and did you notice any increase in performance? I recently talked with Goetz and he's using the new high voltage setup in his 400 but couldn't honestly see any change in performance. It's too bad that the cam timing setup in the larger engines can't use the new Rainbow. Hope to here your results. Mitch (the other one....not Down and Locked).
Yes. Thank you for the post.

There are two completely different ignitions out there, in addition to the original Moki ignition.

The new Moki ignition is redesigned for higher voltage input (up to 10V with at least 9V recommended). A better spark is the goal. It is new, and is considered an upgrade. It can be used on any size Moki.

The Rainbow Tronics is an ''aftermarket'' ignition and is available right now for the S150 and S180 only. It also uses high voltage (of up to 12V). It has stronger spark, easy start (spark goes into burst mode), new timing and a ton of features in the software (giving you fantastic LED based feedback on status and codes).

I am replacing the OEM Moki ignition with their new version. Changes by manufacturers are made for a reason, and I like the higher voltage.
Hi Gary,

Just picking up on this re the new ignition.

I have a 215 which would probably benefit from the upgrade.

Could you advise what the modification involves, what cost and where from please.

(Sorry if this is going over old ground)

Hello guys. Thank you for your kind concern. I am still here. It has been a very trying summer so far. A lot of family things and my son and partner broke his foot playing with his son, and that has impacted my spare time as I have needed to be more involved with the business. Although I have tried to keep things moving with the hobby, it has been difficult at times, and spending time on the computer was even harder. Sorry to be off the radar at times. I think we are turning the corner now. I'll be getting caught up with posting soon.

I did take delivery on the Moki engine stand-offs I had made for the CARF. They are stainless steel and I have set made for both the 215 and 250. They are different lengths. Each set has three different lengths to accomplish the correct engine thrust. I have set the price at $21.50 a set plus shipping. I also now have the stainless steel stand-offs for the cowl flap system. I'll also be posting pictures of these things as well.

Now for some cool news. I was able to get to a popular local war bird event and Big Hog was brought out for the first time since Top Gun. The result, another nice award. A couple pictures.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1915664 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1915665 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1915666 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1915667 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1915668

I have been asked about the length of the control arms I used for the direct link to the tail wheel gear doors. They are 1 1/4" center to center of the ball links. You will need to cut the links down a bit.

Hi Gary,
Glad you're back, then maybe I can expect you to send me the Corsair Gun System in the near future?
Regards, Christiaan

Hello Steve. The new Moki ignition attaches to the engine the same as the old, with the very same plugs, so the switch is very easy. It is a completely different shape, so mounting it will require a different plate. Voglesang Aeroscale imports the units. Contact Gotz for the purchase.

By the way - will you be able to post the guns and exhaust shrouds to New York, for me to collect next week ?

More of BIG HOG. We will do some paint fading effects to the top surfaces. After the markings are on, I'll get her shine toned down and get into the weathering and distressing. This is going to be fun.:D

Hi Gary, How do you shined down the paint job on the corsair?

Thanks

Roberto

Fuel system install. I like to install the pump right under the tank. It has a very short line from the tank to the pump that primes instantly with gravity.

Pump has a built in return line to prevent over pressure. The other end of the Festo T goes to the engine.

Is there no vent line from the tank?

ram3500-RCU 09-19-2013 04:42 AM

Yes, just not installed yet. See the top port on the tank from the front view.

I use the three line system. The fill line isn't installed yet either. It will go to a large fuel dot under the top hatch.

JSZ 09-19-2013 05:20 AM

Yes I see it now

ram3500-RCU 09-19-2013 02:03 PM

I like these tanks. It has a medium size output, but it is the same size as the one on the pump, so a larger one would do no good anyway. The molded in grooves for the straps are nice also.

ram3500-RCU 09-19-2013 02:14 PM

Fading can be simulated by cutting your paint with 10 percent white, then dusting the top surfaces. You can remove sheen with flat clear, scotch bright pads, matt acrylic paints, to name a few.

Hi Gary,
Still waiting for my Corsair Machine Gun System. Paid you $ 372,- on april 9th, 2013 and don't even get a proper reply to my many e-mails and questions, let alone the promised items.
Very disappointed...........
Christiaan

ram3500-RCU 10-10-2013 05:44 AM

Hello Christiaan. You should have received it. I am on vacation or of town, but will look into it when I get back this week end.

Gary.
