Ziroli Stuka

This is my Nick Ziroli Stuka down at the beautiful flying field of the Southern Ohio R/Cers. It's located on the flat land next to the Ohio River near Portsmouth, Ohio. You can see the hills of Kentucky in the background. It's a beautiful setting for some nice R/C flying.

The Stuka is all built up from Nick's plans and has an old but reliable Kioritz 2.4 cu. in. engine in it. The weight is 26 lbs. and the model flies like it's on rails! I drop bombs with it but, unfortunately, didn't get any pictures of the bomb dropping.

Jim,

Thats fantastic looking! I'm working on one now. Build up wing with one of Ty's glass fuses. Hopefully I'll be done with it come the spring.

I think you'll enjoy it.

BTW, I used the Robart struts on the landing gear.

Yeah, I've been thinking of getting a set of the Sierra gear for this bird. He even includes pre-shaped hardwood to go right into the wing ribs...

But I have a lot to do before I get to that point!

My wood is from Mace Gill, and he included all the pre-bent 1/4 wire should I chose to use it.

Everything I've seen and heard about the Stuka is that it is a fantastic flier that really helps to keep you motivated because of that flying.

Here's a nice shot my wife got earlier in the summer of a bomb being released. It's not so easy getting it in the middle of the runway, where you want it, but it's great fun anyway!

Thanks. I used that picture for one of my desktop backgrounds. That was a lucky shot!

Tmoth, great shot of the bomb drop! Did you build a trapeeze for it? Or just a quick release?

Jon N, thats fantastic looking.

The Ziroli Stuka is a good airplane. I bought this one on Ebay 2 years ago. It was built by Jim Archer out of Florida. Since then I have been terrorizing spectators at the field with screaming dives coming from my I4C siren. Bombing runs deliver a NERF football. What I need to do is add more bombs on the outer wings so that I can inflict more damage on each Sortie. Great fun! Leo

Jim,
Haven't you had that Stuka for some time now? My 10-year old Stuka is still is great shape. Ready to outfit it with 2.4 gear.

How's the Dauntless and ME110? New projects?

No, I don't use a trapeze just a kwik release. On my list of "to-dos" is to at least put a fake one on!:D

Hi Nick,
I just built the Stuka last year. I built it because I had a good engine for it and I couldn't stand to have it laying on the shelf! The Dauntless is still going strong too, and so is the ME 110, but I haven't flown that one in a while. I have too many planes, but I hate to get rid of any!

I'm working on a couple of WW1 projects (Gotha bomber and BUSA Nieuport) and I have a set of Ziroli Corsair plans and accessories waiting until next year maybe.

Hi Leo,

Do you know where I can get a good siren? It looks like I4c is out of business. I got a small siren from JC Whitney but i's kind of wimpy sounding and can hardly hear it when the plane is in the air.

Leo, that one looks fantastic.

I'm still not sure how I am going to paint mine yet, maybe a Spanish Civil War if I can find a nice B model in those colours. But I still have plenty of time to work that out.

RE: Ziroli Stuka

Tmoth, I4C is out of business. So Sirens are very rare. I get offers for mine all the time. Currently I don't believe there is any source for a good siren. The I4C did have a design problem with the drive prop which resulted in mine breaking within the first 2 days of use. I have since fix that problem and had good performance all year.

Evil, This Stuka has a strange color scheme. It is black with black lettering on it. I think it was supposed to be dark green. The guy that built it called it "Black on Black" and said it was scale. Who knows? The only black Stuka I have ever seen was a Cox control line plastic model from the 70's. I am sure that one was not scale.

RE: Ziroli Stuka

Let me see if I can find any data on it for you Leo.

At least we know it was supposedly from StG 2.

I have lots of Stuka resources.

I think its SUPPOSED to be a B-2 from 2./StG 2 flying out of Belika, in Bugaria in the late spring of 1941. And then apparently later in Russia at the end of 1941.
The "real" serial number is supposed to be T6+CK:

Or:

None the less, I like it. It doesn't look like every other Stuka, even if the colour isn't historically accurate, and the "serial number" is wrong.

Here are a couple more pictures of mine. I almost did it like the one above with the scotty dog on it, but did this one instead. My flying buddy is going to do that one whenever he gets around to building it.

Love that blue spinner. It really highlights the whole plane.

I need to make sure I find something similar for mine.

Jim (tmoth4), Which siren from J.C. Whitney did you try? Is it the electric driven one that is first in the line-up below and in the center picture? I bought 3 sirens from J.C. Whitney to study them and see what makes them loud. The all have features that can contribute to good siren design. The parts of the I4C are on the far right. I am looking closely at siren design right now.

Evil, My plane has the right serial code. T6+CK as you say. Look really close at the picture with the fuse side and you will see that K in black on black after the yellow stripe. It is there. The plane just doesn't have any Olivgrun on it.

RE: Ziroli Stuka

Leo,
It's the smaller one on the left. I have it mounted in the engine box facing up inside the cowl. I might try moving it to the wing center section pointing down, behind the bomb release tabs. Maybe a stronger battery would help too. It was pretty loud on the bench!

Yep, I saw it, I just didn't know what was up with the 6 on the other side... I got confused. Easy to do. Still fantastic looking none the less...

Evil,

The RH side or Starboard side says T6+CK also. It just happens that the 6 lands on the yellow stripe. What is the right way for this designation to be applied? Should it be CK+T6 or maybe KC+6T?

Still you can see from this photo how crazy this black on black is. You can hardly see the letters. Makes me think I should mask it off and spray some green on it as it should be. Leo
