you could just make a weighted "depth charge" only instead of explosives when it hits the ground or reaches a certian depth, a bobber ir some kind of float could be released and whatever ship is near or over it would be registered as "sunk"...only the owner wouldnt have to retreive the peices from the bottom of the lake......it may not be as fun, but im shure whoever put a coulple thousand $ into the ship would be happy (compared to what could have happened if he was hit with an explosion....

That IS one of the current ASW techniques. You drop a weighted line over the target submarine, and if it hits, it drags the sub down to the depths. Of course it is IMPERATIVE that you also have a recovery float attached to the weighted line, so you can find the submarine after the battle. Nobody wants their $1200 ship to be lost and gone forever.

Well,

I'm a sub boy and i have been seeing what you want to do to us.
YOU WANT TO BLOW US UP, AHH........
of course we want to blow you up to so we're square. And you would be
suprised what we can do. just go to our section and see.
I LOVE to blow stuff up by the way. And yes, that includes you.

Erm... subhunter, there is a slight difference between "sink" and "blow up". We generally shoot for the most repeatable method of sinking each other, and "blowing up" stuff isn't easy to repeat 'cause you have to build a new boat every time Now I certainly have no problem with sinking you, or being sunk myself. Just so long as all I have to do is replace some balsa and dry out the electronics it's all OK. Building an armed combat submarine in the standard scale of 1:144 is rather difficult, and is very rewarding (our ASW is really not as advanced as you might suspect, and working submarines have a very high "kill" rate). But "blow up" my german cruiser and you'll have a lot more to worry about than weighted lines and downward-pointing cannons.

true,
I do want to sink ships(and yes that includes you) but using a high powered torpedo
is more fun and you want to put the"enemy"out of commission. You really need better
ASW equipment because it would be to easy just to sink ships un-opposed and few ideas are here,

1.plant anti-submarine mines
2.make a small squad of ASW depth charge cruisers.
3.use other subs.(that's how I will live up to my name)
4.plant Q ships.
5.use something like hedgehog's that are propelled toward the subs location.
6.use hydro-phones (on ships and stations on land)

ask your squads about how to implement this, and by the way where does
your club meet?

For the use of ASW there are and will always be the destroyer. That would certainly add something new to the competition. By the way, i know that ramming is not allowed in combat, but it should be when used against a submarine. In fact the very first sub in world war one was sunk by being rammed by the battleship Dreadnought. Another idea for ASW is to have ships tow a weight stick in spikes. That was is would be in the general direction of depth charged behind a ship and it's simple(just wack the sub underwater).

i have a very simple non explosive way of making a depth charge- only for effect. use photograph cartriges filled with 1/3 water and an alka-seltzer tablet. you have a barrier with a hole in it so when the charge rolls off, the weight will tip the water through the hole to the tablet.

How do you make the depth charges? I am new to submarines and I think they are AWSOME! I would really like to know how so I can make some. Do you buy them or do you or do you make them?

Thank you [8D]

ORIGINAL: NeedtoFIRE

i wonder who came up with the idea with just using C02 cannons, lots of club rules state you cannot use any other type of weapon besides those cannons. Who came up with this rule and how did it come to be? Wouldn't it be more funner if there were other weapons like torpedoes, depth charges, catepults, and radio scramblers?
1) There are other weapons systems in many clubs. However they are generally based on springs, strings, CO2, etc.

2) How did it come to be this way? Decades of development trying lots of stuff to determine what is safe and effective in the game. That, and finding what activities are also insurable.

3) Some clubs do have Torpedoes, many have mines, some have depth charges, some have catapults (for planes), none have radio scramblers (first, this is illegal under FCC regulations, second it is patently unsafe, and third, how is it fun if you can't play the game - remember, if you can have a scrambler, so can everyone else, and all radios will be scrambled so no-one can play?)

Why is it that so many want to have the invulnerable super ship that destroys everything it its path without sustaining any damage itself? Where is the sport in being a bully and just destroying stuff? You could do that by not even building a ship - just bring a 12 gauge to the pond and start shooting people's ships. Hopefully they would see this as wrong, but whey are advocating something that is the equivalent.

Fun, to me, is pitting your skill against someone with equal or better equipment, under the rules, and winning against the odds.

There are plenty of variations in ships and club types to give you lots of choice as it is.

Sorry for the rant, but it is a bit frustrating to see people who have never built a combat ship nor seen a battle get such joy in envisioning total destruction of a ship that may have cost well over $1000 and taken up to 18 months to build when the point is not that, but to give and sustain easily repairable damage and sinks. It also hurts the sport for a casual reader to come across this kind of reckless discourse and get the idea that this is what we are all about.

Cheers,

Wreno
