Hey toastycodem,
We sell the clutch, it comes with the spring. It's item number 02048.
Check our website, we are in SoCal. The car, buggy and truck have different names but parts are all the same as the Redcats.

Sorry, to replace it, you will have to remove the engine. It's inside the clutch bell/gear.
Looks like this or slightly different if you have a 2 speed.

dont sweat removing your engine. The first time I had to fix my clutch spring I was real nervous but now its no big deal.
IF you want you can try re fastening the broken spring back to itself and slipping it back over the clutch shoes. Generally the very end of the spring is all that snapped off but if your not sure how much of the spring is missing just measure it. The stock replacement springs are just a hair under 1 and 3/4 inches when brand new and they have a little grab hook bent into each end of them. Its hard to bend new hooks but it can be done. This is a mickey mouse fix and they will be a little tighter than stock but I havent seen it matter yet. They will break again fairly quickly, because its technically a little shorter, but youll get a little more run time out of each spring.
The only tricky part ( for me) to reinstalling the engin is the gear mesh but this can be done fairly easily. First put your engine back on and put the mounting screws back in but dont tighten them up yet. This will allow you to move the engine around and set the gear mesh. Run a strip of notebook paper up through the bottom of the chassis and in between the clutch bell gear and the spur gear. The engine should be fairly straight and lined up with the rest of the car. tighten 1 or two of the mounting screws and put the car on the floor. Roll it back and forth and check for binding. If the engine is a little crooked the spur gear will roll around freely untill it reaches a certain point and then you will feel resistance. Reloossen your mounting screws and move tbe pullstart side of the engine just slightly in one direction or the other and try it again. Keep an eye on the piece of paper to see that it stays in place or your gear mesh will be to tight. after youve adjusted the engine so that it doesnt bind tighten the rest of the mounting screws and pull out the paper. DONT FORGET to hook the throttle linkage back up! Ive done this twice now and one time I caught the buggy before it got away and the other time, well lets just say......[:@][:'(]
Also, if you do a search on clutch spring in the forums you can find some links to sites where you can order better springs that will fit your RC. Also, also I am really glad I bought my " Ultimate Nitro Engine Guide " It has been a real help. I would suggest to anyone thats getting started to pick one of these books up. Post u later

you dont have to remove your engine to get clutch spring out although you do have to take off upper plate that fuel tank is hooked to and tranny (housing with two gear ) i think redcat calls it moderate gear set from that point you will have access to allen head bolt on what redcat calls a gear set remove gear set as pictured above and there is your clutch and spring GOOD LUCK i found this method alet easier then removing engine this way you dont need to worry about remeshing gears cause moderate gear set only fits on way

Well , the clutch spring finally broke ! At the request of Redcat I let the car idle for along time. Four tanks of fuel this thing idled for . Then the idle got a little lower , and the car started to get quiet. I seen my Tornado riding off with out me at the wheel. It was a less then impressive sight but a sight !! I'm telling you , it looked so stupid idling away I could not stop laughing. That was the most fun I've had with this car yet. I think I'm really getting a warped sence of humor with this car.
The tech guy wanted me to leave the car idle with the radio on figuring it would heat up the radio. I told him I think just driving the car might work better but since it decided it didn't like being in one piece that it was not possible at the moment. So , the idle treatment. He tried to lighten up the whole thing joking about how it won't act up when you need it to. I told him " No , it won't quit unless everything else is working" Why quit when you don't have to ? Something else broke for you and now you can wait your turn !
Ok , when the car is running again , we are going to figure this radio out.
Things that went wrong:
Engine siezed
Radio quit
Steering arm broke , after the radio quit smashing it into a fixed object
New Transmitter , new steering arm , starter falls off
Fixed starter , loctited everything, reworked ckutch bell that was shaking , radio quit again
Steering arm broke again while playing in the grass ... bad grass !
Clutch Spring broke, its ok I've got a new one was just wanting to see how long it would take to brake.
I think I've spent more time fixing then driving.

I just completed reassembling my Volcano Stx clutch. I was able to recycle the old spring as described here by "crafting" a new hook from its broken end. I unfortunatly end-up with an extra washer! And its not clear to me where it shoud go. The assembly should be as follow I believe:
1 - shoes
2 - shoes retaining clip
3 - washer
4 - bearing
5 - washer
6 - clutch bell
7 - waster
8 - another smaller washer
9 - allen nut
I am not sure whether there should be an extra washer between 5 and 6?
Does anyone knows?

all i had was 1-9, maybe they gave you a double and you didnt realize it. also get the traxxas spring #4146x, it will outlast the redcat spring, i put one in and its been 20 tanks.
