IDLE ADJUSTMENT HELP!!!!!

hey, my question is when your idle is set, should your breaks have to be engaged to keep it from moving. When I first started my volcano, the engine was reving extremily high and the clutch was engaging and spinning the wheels. so I went to my hobby shop to additional help and he adj. the idle (duh) and then adj. the steering knob on my controller so that the brake was mildly pinching. it seems to word okay, but I thought it might wear out the break and clutch sooner. so should the idle be set up like this or differently? Hey Brian. I am very new to RCs still so I can't say for sure if your set-up will prematurely wear out your brakes or clutch but you can have it set to where you don't need the brakes to keep the car from moving. I have both my RCs set up to where they will idle fine but not take off on me even without applying the brakes. If I had to guess I have the idle opening at maybe 1mm.
Again, that is just how I have my cars set up based from all the help I have gotten from the guys here and from reading the tuning/repair thread. I am sure someone with more experience than me will come along and give you some advice as well, and if I am wrong I apologize. Just trying to help by telling my set up.

Thanks for your help! On your controller, is your steering adjustment set so that the servo is pushing on the brake, or is it at neutral where there is no throttle, and no brake?

BJ, I am also relatively new to nitro's, but not to R/C...I've always set everything to neutral, or else you're bound to burn something up. Also, so that others might be able to help you better, and everyone speak the same language, The steering arm and linkage controls your front wheels and has nothing to do with your throttle or brakes...Although it's run off a servo, it is called Throttle linkage (or anything else refering to throttle). This way here, if you're having a linkage or servo issue, people won't get confused by the question being asked, and you won't get wrong advice. Not trying to pick, or be over critical, but trying to help...nothing worse than asking a question and getting help, only to find that what you're told doesn't work because everyone is talking about a different part (I run into this a lot with my p/t business)...Good luck with everything...

Yes mine is set to neutral (throttle trim) where the brakes are not being applied while the car is idling in place. It took me a good while before I finally got my cars dialed in right and there were a few times I was getting frustrated. As I mentioned though, there is a ton of good info on here to help out and I have also found out that if you can't find what you need in the threads already posted, someone will always be more than happy to help you if you ask.
If your car is set the way you said where the brakes are mildly binding to keep it in place on the ground before you actually drive off then I would venture to say that you have a little more room to close up the idle opening gap (sorry, I don't know if that is the right name for it but that is what I call it
). Don't know if this is the right way or not but the easy way I figured to set mine was to adjust the idle screw to where it almost stalled the car without blipping the throttle then opened it up ever so slightly from there, and now it's set perfect for me. Hope this helps.

A little break won't hurt and you shouldn't be worried about burning them up. As soon as you apply some throttle they open up and stop rubbing anyways. If you're having to apply full breaking to get the car to stand still, then you've got some adjusting to do, but otherwise a little to keep it from crawling forward is most likely ok.
