question on how to clean the air filter

whats the best way of cleaning it? im guessing just water and make sure it dries all the way? also is there some type of oil to put in the filter to keep it clean?

soap and water cleans it up really well
rinse it out really good! Go to an atv/dirtbike shop and pick up some ipone or belray filter oil, it'll last darn near the life of the engine, if not, longer. And when i say that, i mean the oil will last that long. the bottle is about a liter... if you manage to run out before the end of your engine's life, i'll be suprised.

I use spray cleaner, like brake kleen, I spray out the foam and it gets real "puffy" from the brake cleaner. Gets like twice it's size. Then I blow it out with compressed air. Once it dries it's back to it's original size. I reoil it with K&N filter oil and good to go. Soap and warm water is the safest though. Just be sure it's thoroughly dry and reoiled before running.

i go the cheap, and easy way. i use dish soap and water. cleans really well. then i dry with a paper towl and put a small amount of vegetable oil on it. works great and i didnt have to go out and buy anything special.

Vegetable oil is not recommended. the only thing that's good to go is your engine, to the dumpster after you fry it.
use a dedicated air filter oil, not vegetable oil. air filter oil is sticky, and traps dirt, vegetable oil...well...isn't.

interesting...the funny thing is i got the vegetable oil idea from redcats website, under support/facts. i guess they are wrong and you are wright.

I thought I was over oiling them with the Traxxas filter oil, so I had gone to the vegtable oil to try...Only tried it one or 2 runs though, not a long time (funny, that's when I started having tuning problems), but both the Himoto and Traxxas owners manuals both say you can use vegtable oil...Of course the Traxxas one says to use theirs first, but if that's not available...LOL...

I've got perfectly good K&N filter oil though, I never even thought about using it on anything but my bike, LOL. screw these $3 half ounce bottles of air filter oil:P

LOL...Agreed Eric...I live a block behind a Kawasaki Dealer...I'm going to have to run over there and buy some...Even if not K&N (I think you might pay more for the name) but any bike filter oil...Although I remember my old man telling me when I was a kid that he used to run vegetable oil on his 2 stroke bikes when he used to race in Japan...but that's also back when they didn't tell you to oil the foam, it was OK to just run a foam ring around an open metal box...

Sticky oil is Sticky oil! LOL
ANY Air filter oil is good. Just be sure it's for air filters. Back in my lawn mower days we would oil the foam with motor oil. Vegatable oil is ONLY good for cooking! I've used a few drops of K&N on the top filter and the bottom filter never gets the least bit dirty.

I guess bikes were either cheaper then or the tolerances were HUGE!

well, he was riding for Okinawa's largest motorcycle dealer at the time, and was a jet mechanic, so it might have been that he had a lot available to him...LOL...He test rode the prototypes for the Water Buffalo (forget actual name, it was the first water cooled street bike) and the TZ750 (widow maker...remember the old pictures of Kenny Roberts entering the corner on the front wheel and exiting on the rear???)

HA HA the Water Buffalo! A friend of mine's been looking for 1 of them for long time! LOL That's cool.. You could probably get away with cheap oil in the "old" days with an engine with rings. I bet those rings got real sticky after a short while though. The Nitro engines as you know have no rings and rely soley on the oil film to seal the cylinder. I bet it would work...but not for long! LOL Water buffalo.. COOL![8D]

LOL...he bought one when I was a kid...left the guys house, we were following him and the transmission locked, almost threw him off the bike...he's been looking at them again more recently, but the price on them has gotten kinda out of control...

LOL Yeah My friend got his hands on a 6 cylinder Honda I think.. maybe a 600cc. Got a custom header for it from Texas, a D&D. That thing sounded like an Indy car! Looked like a piece of poo! LOL Those old bikes pull in the $$ now though.. WOW! way off topic! Sorry guys maybe my Volcano will be pulling in some big $$ on Ebay in 30+ years! LOL

go to my dad's garage and you'll see a few vintage 2 stroke zukes...the GT550 included
(and the redheaded ******* of the family, his '82 GL500, for a reason)...first bike I ever rode on the street was his warmed over T350. all i can say is it scared the hell out of me. Ever ridden a TM400 racebike?...somethin else that scared the hell out of me
BTW, the water buffalo was the GT750/550 triple. I called my dad one day about 7 or 8 months ago and told him i was looking at a Kawasaki H2. "You bring a GREEN bike into my family I'll disown you!! (most likely joking, but we'll find out eventually, lol) The guy wouldn't budge on the price though, so i went home
my next bike is hopefully an old Yami RZ350. all the aftermarket parts available for the Banshee (that's where the Banshee's engine came from, after all) and it shouldn't be slow. right now i'm happy putterin about on my old GS

CU...that 6 cyl honda, if it's what i'm thinkin of, is a CBX...SWEET bikes, don't know much about 'em, but they're 1000cc IIRC (750 4 banger with a cylinder stuck on each end apparently)
oh...yeah...and uh, on topic...

Eric, we had picked up an old H2 (450 I think) as part of a lot of recovery bikes...and When I was a kid, I helped him build an R5 (early air coled RD-350) bored to 460, put it in a TZ 250 race frame...$1200 (early 80's $$$) into the whole bike and it pulled 9 flat in the 1/4 (ticked him off 'cause he had $3500 into the engine of his car and only did high 10's)...He's got an old Yami XS-750 (maybe TX) triple all hopped up that was bought with a dresser conversion of it...Nothing like watching an 850lbs full dress kitty corner a pick-up bed, or lift the front end while smoking the tire (I witnessed both)...He's currently doing a Virago and I'm doing a Maxim (if I can ever find the carbs for it)...
Oh by the way, Back on topic...I stopped by the Kawasaki Dealer yesterday and picked up some RD (I think that's the name) filter lube...Super sticky....$6.95 for a whole huge can...How can you go wrong...To heck with that small tube we've been using...LOL...

damn it! i've been busy with work and i dont come in here for a couple of days and bamm...you can use bike filter oil. i just got some at hobbytown today for 4 bucks! [:@]
