I am fairly new to RCs as well but if I am not mistaken you will and should only see smoke when under throttle. I know my buggies don't smoke from the exhaust at idle but when I apply the throttle there is a nice trail of smoke.
As far as richening/leaning the needles....rich is counter-clockwise and lean is clockwise. Hope this helps and I am sure the other guys/well seasoned RCers will be by to help.

and did it come with an owners manual?
if its a redcat lightning, good luck. the owners manual has many errors...and is confusing. [&o]

I have a hurricane xp w/.28. I'm charging the glow plug igniter again just in case. Is it normal after trying to start for a bit to have fuel in the muffler?

Yes fuel in muffler is normal and the factory setting should be set rich.
There should'nt be smoke at idle untill you apply the throttle.
At about a quarter throttle you should see a light smoke trail.
If theres not any smoke at quarter throttle, try a quarter turn counter clockwise on the hsn.

Welcome... I suggest you read through alot of these posts. THere is some good information here. Since this is your first nitro, this info will be a great help to you. The setting it came with will be enough to run it through break in. Fuel in the muffler is a sign of rich. Read the break in procedure and follow it. It will be better in the long run.

Update, got it running It was just to rich I leaned out the LSN. I was out driving it at 8 am I think it might be a little to noisy for 8am. I still think its to rich I can't get it above 120 deg. btw getting a nice trail of smoke. It seems to want to die when the clutch engages. anyhow I think maybe I'll wrap the head in some foil to get some heat in there.

120 deg? Wow! slowly start leaning out that hsn(clockwise) remember only small adjustments(quarter turn) then run for a few minutes.
Keep you temp meter handy and test after each run,It will warm up above 120 deg after you lean it out. 240-280deg is about the temp you want.

You richen it in cooler weather because the air is thicker when it's cold. That means you're getting more air into the engine. To counteract that you'll need to richen the fuel mixture to get more gas in there also.

haha yeah, I used to live up there in dublin, ohio. I'm going to college here at FSU though. I was going to go to the fsu rice game today but I'm a bit under the weather. The game is also at the same time the buckeyes are playing penn state. So that was an easy decision for me. I just gave my ticket to my room mate.
I was at that clemson game last week. Man you should have seen the faces on the crowd after clemson scored with 8 seconds left. I think i actually saw some people crying. It was pretty bad.

lol yeah
we were chanting "fire jeff bowden" at every chance we got. The guy is awful.
It just doesn't make sense. We have great players like Booker, de code fagg, and Davis but we can't get anything going on offense. I think I could even coach better than the guy.

I have leaned the LSN 1 full turn second run I was up to about 160 and I covered the head with foil!!! still have good smoke I think it still needs to be leaned more.. Ok well I'm goin to let it cool. What Kind of run time are you guys getting with the hurricane...
