Make sure you adjust the right screw, there are 2, on holds the shifter on the shaft and one controls the shift. The center one it the one that holds it on the shaft and should be hard to turn counterclockwise. I would suggest to turn the shift adjuster 1.2 turn counter clocwise then try it, do it again and again until you get it to shift. Dont do it too much otherwise you might loosen too much and the spring will pop out, you may have a bad shifter too, i had one and had to replace it. let me know what happens.

buy a new on from clermontmotorsports.com, i think they come with a bad spring inside sometimes, its not worth taking apart just to try and fix. get a new one, spray some lube on it and put it in and you will be fine, make sure that your not in second gear too, you can usually tell since its slow on take off. I would suggest the upgraded clutch bell and clutch spring too, check out the sticky on top.

not the tranny, this part: http://www.clermontmotorsports.com/s.../Detail?no=125

The little spring control the about of tension on an arm, when the transmisson spins fast enough, the arm is forced out to grab the second gear spur, it is hit and miss with them, i have 2 xp's , 1 has shifted fine from day one and one had to be changed, easy fix for $3.50. Sorry bro, you can try to fool with the setting some more but i wouldnt break the transmission down to try to fix it, your better off replacing it.

yeah, easy to install but dont get the factory clutch bell or clutch spring. you do need to get the factory gear changer though.
