Default Engine Trouble!

Hey all, whats it mean when all the sudden my engine goes nuts and starts screamin at full throttle but the car doesnt go anywhere? Happened yesterday. Not cool LOL! Also I need suggestions on how to keep the engine running cooler. It gets to hot to fast then starts to bog down. Im not really familiar with this engine, I wasnt the original owner who broke it in. Im still in the process of learning what this thing likes! haha, if that makes sense. Thanks all! Arlin.

is it like the clutch slipping. that vx never really ran that hot, did you lean it out or somthing? i always ran it pig rich on the high end. also i never adjusted the mid range, it always ran great. slow but good.

id say go real rich high end and if you adj the mid range richen that also.

Yea, I had it going really well yesterday, Idle was good, speed was good, everything good. Then it started running a little too hot, then just started screaming full blast but the car didnt move anywhere. Just sat there with the engine going crazy. I havent looked at it yet though. I just figured that my clutch spring broke and flew off or something.

if its a 2 speed maybe the one way bearing instide the spur gear went bad, look and see if the spur gear is spinning when its not moving. make sure all your drivetrain drive cup universals grub screws are tight. If your overheating your either running too lean or you have an air leak on the engine, carb, fuel like or fuel tank. If your running too rich is wont overheat unless its sucking in air from somewhere else.

Its only a single speed. I checked again and sure enough my spur gear was stripped. I couldnt see it last night in the dark when it happened. But it is still overheating. Whats a common place where air tries to find its way in? Also, any suggestions to lengthen the life of a spur gear? I know how to mesh the gears properly, I just didnt know if anyone knew a secret I didnt. Thanks. Arlin.

I had a similar issue, I had to run it so damn rich, it was almost flush on the high side.

Fuel tank, mine was in the lid ... used the rubber ring in a new HPI primer tank I bought and now it's leak proof.

Here's the best way to test:

1. remove tank from chassis, with lines attached (empty)
2. plug/pinch the feed line (goes to carb)
3. take the return line (from exhaust) and blow into the end of it, listen for whistles

You could take dishwasher soap and dab a little around where you hear the whistle, you will see bubbles where the leak is. Mine was under the cap.

if you blow in the end of the tube, should no air come out at all? Or should some come out?

no air should come out of the tank unless you blow hard and it opens the seal on the cap.

Hey mini, well no leaks in the tank. Im gonna tighten up my exhaust a little cuz I think its a little loose and see if that helps. Let me know if you've got any other suggestions! Thanks man! Arlin.

i dont think i bad seal in the tank lid would put bubbles in the fuel line. i mean, the air goes up and the fuel goes through the line at the bottom of the tank,. there is a little staw thing that goes to the bottome of the tank. what im saying is what minicwik said doesnt make sence.

???? if the tank leaks air it will not build up pressure so it wont be able to push fuel and run very lean, so why doesnt that make any sense to you? this will make an engine run hot and stall at full throttle and actually not run very good at all.

Of course it will put bubbles in the line. It will be sucking air if the tank is not sealed.

about your engine screaming. . . my ofna did the same thing, i checked the diffs, put new oil in, checked the clutch bell/spur gear but everything was in perfect condition. so i started it up, drove it for about 5 minutes and it was fine, then the screaming engine and not going anywhere again. i had forgotten to check the set screw. all i did was tighten it and its been running perfect ever since. i know you figured out why it was doing it but i just posted it so maybe somebody wont make the same dummy mistake as i did by overlooking the set screw

what im saying is there is no way for air bubbles from the back pressure line to get into the engine. unless youre low on fuel.
