RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

hey guys got the gears and put them in but now it wont shift to second and i already looked at the other post in here about the screw on the tranny, it is out as far as i dare or i will get lost. could it be sumthing i did putting it back together? and i am still not sure i set the gear mesh right. how long should the first gear last if i do it right? it already looks like it is wearing down.

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

Well if it shifted into second before and now after replacing the gears, it's not, I'd give everything a once over and retrace your steps. Your bound to find where you went wrong. Also a good idea to set that "gear screw" back to factory setting.

I will try the soapy water trick this weekend to see if I have a leakanywhere. Also going to be ordering a new exhaust coupler as well. Hopefully that will get me back up and running. Thanks for the info!

I have been looking for a buggy or truggy and i was just wondering what would be the best choice and the max money is about $250 would the volcano or the tornado s30 be a better choice

A real nice buggy that everyone is talking about is the Ofna Hyper 7. On Towerhobbies.com it's $299, a bit more than you stated but I'm told it's rock solid. If you take some time to search around on the net, you might find it a bit cheaper. You'll hear some people say that RedCat/Exceed/ and Himoto aren't great for bashing and that they break easy. But at the same time, other's will say they beat the crap out of them and they hold up rather well. It's all about what you want. Find something you like, read up about it and make a choice. I myself bought a Exceed HyperSpeed. It's a single speed buggy with a .16 engine. As soon as I got it, before I even ran it, I swapped out the stock servo's for some better Traxxas waterproof servo that also offer more torque. Plus I dumped my Futaba FM radio system in it with a Ofna Failsafe. I'm now in the middle of breaking it in. But so far so good. A friend of mine has the same buggy and he treats it like crap, but it always bounces back, that's why I got one.

The Tornado S30 is a upgraded version of mine, it just offer a two speed tranny. The Volcano looks nice but I dont know much about that one. Plus either way you go, parts will be cheap and RedCat offer some great customer service.

I jsut got the Tornado BB 1/10 scale. After starting my car for the first time I pulled out the glow starter and it immediatly died. This happened every other time after this as well. What can i do to fix this, what might be causing this problem? What should i do to return the car and idle screw to factory settings so it will at least idle normally. Thank you

John

When you get it tuned right and it warms up it will quit doing that.................try leaving you igniter on it for a minute to clear off the glow plug, I have to do that when mine sit a while [:-]

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

The stock settings for the engine are 2 1/2 turns out for the high speed needle and 4 turns out for the low speed needle. Turn them all the way in and stop immediately when you feel resistance. Then turn them out the number of turns you need for each. For the idle adjustment screw, turn it clockwise to increase the idle speed and counter clockwise to decrease it. If you haven't broken it in yet turn the high speed needle 4 1/2 or 4 turns out.

Just before I broke in my Buggy, I counted the turns on my HSN/LSN. I got 2 1/2 on the HSN and 3 on the LSN. I've always read that the LSN it supposed to be flush but this one was set way in. Is that normal for these motors?

amf66 01-10-2009 11:32 AM

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

Thats normal. Never trust the factory needle settings on an engine. The real factory settings should be flush for the LSN and 2 1/2 for the HSN.

joeyhatch11 01-10-2009 06:32 PM

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

I went and retested today. With the LSN flush, it ran like crap. I turned it in about 2 turns and it now sits pretty much where it was when I got it. At first after making it flush it wouldn't start. I would pull and pull and get nothing. I turned in the LSN and she kicked right over. I dont know, seems really out of place if you ask me but I retuned her and she's flying again. I guess it is what it is. But thanks for the info.

Hey, Can you adjust when the gear shifts, if so how

joeyhatch11 01-11-2009 09:00 PM

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

Look through the manual. There should be a section where it tells you how to make the 2-speed adjustments. Turning the screw in/out with make it shift sonner/later. I believe turning it in will make it shift later and turning it out will make it shift sooner. But you can't be too loose or the screw can fall out and if it's too tight you'll mess up the spring inside. Be careful

joeyhatch11 01-11-2009 09:01 PM

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

I also believe stock settings are, from all the way closed, three turns out.

There is nothing in my Manuel about the transmission, but i did find a hex screw next to the aft gear, i want to stay away from touching it though:)

joeyhatch11 01-12-2009 06:31 AM

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

Well if you dont touch it, then how are you going to get it to shift sooner/later? You gotta do something. It's all about that screw.

jambafromhell 01-12-2009 05:11 PM

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

After looking further i found 2 hex screws....... So. I dont really know wich one to adjust, i gues i should fiddle around. I will try it this weekend, hope i get good results

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

I know on my HPI RS4 3 there are 2 set screws. The one on an angle is the one that I'd adjust to make it shift sooner/later. Does your have one like that?

Brett185 01-12-2009 05:46 PM

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

Do you have the little round silver clutch in you transmission with 2 screws in it? If you do, one is a set screw that holds the clutch to the shat, the other is the adjustment screw. The adjustment screw is the one that is less recessed, the hole it is in is angled. You can make adjustments 1/8 turn at a time. Turning it clockwise will shift later, counterclockwise will make it shift earlier. Don't be afraid to mess with it. your not gonna screw it up. But like joey said though, don't loosen it too much or the screw will fall out, however if you tighten it, all that will happen is it won't shift. some people just tighten it up so it won't shift at all and just run on 1st gear.

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

My Nephew has a tornado BB with the Vertex .18 that I dont think is shifting either. We tighten or loosen the adjustment screw and it makes no difference. I guess I'll need to pull the transmission out and see where RedCat screwed up.

joeyhatch11 01-12-2009 06:06 PM

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread

Yeah that does sound like a tranny issue. Check the spring in the tranny. Someone once said that if you over tighten that set screw it'll ruin the spring.

turning the grub screw in makes it shift sooner, or stuck in first....screwing it out makes it shift later or it will stick in second
