Hi all,
Been working on my QHOR, my first. I have made 2 errors so far and need some advice.
1. I have a wing span of 20.5 inches instead of the normal 24 inches for a OS .25 MAX. Will this cause the plane to be out of control with such a short wingspan?
2. When cutting the angle on the aelerons, I made a very bad cut and so I cut them flat again. This only gives me 1 inches of control surface on the aelerons. Will my QHOR still roll right with such small aelerons?
Everything else is going as planned. The 3/4 inch channel seems to twist awefully easy and am thinking of shortening the length and adding something inside the channel to stabalize this. Opinions?
Thanks!

I hate to be the negitive ninny...but...although I think your plane will fly...it's going to be a little rocket with a very poor roll rate. I would say that if at all possible, make a new wing for it. We have found that wing dimensions used for the PQHOR (32" span with 4" ailerons) is the best performer...and if you want really radical aileron performance, leave them 4" straight across (no taper)
Of course, true to the Spad way...nothing stopping you from flying what you have, and then coming back with a flight report. Good or bad, there is always something to learn!

Brandon,
I would agree a new wing is in order...however as I note and seem to recall from a previous post since you are stationed in Japan material availability is a problem? You could salvage what you have by adding a 2" extension on each end....insert/glue several skewers or dowels into the existing wing flutes and slide/butt the wing extensions onto the skewers. Use some packaging tape or sign vinyl to cover the joint.
Cut off the 1" ailerons and hinge (Robart type hinge points) new 4" ailerons. The barn door ailerons are part of what makes thing perform the way it does. If you have a second compatable color for the extensions and ailerons it would look like you intended to be that way.
It would however add a little weight. Just a thought.
Not sure what you have for the channel....but the 3/4" ply edge channel although does twist a little is not a problem.
Goodluck and post pictures.
You'll absolutely love the way it flies....

Thanks for the help. I guess I will need to go buy some more coro today and rebuild a new wing. I do have another question while I am on here.
1. How do you cut your profile fuselage without it becoming all jagged looking? I tried and it looked absolutely horendous.
Thanks

I've had great success actually sticking the knive blade in my plywood workbench (stationary) and moving the coroplast as if the blade was a scroll saw
...I've also used a true scroll saw...works great but leaves the edges a little fuzzy...I've also used the sewing scissors...also works awesome, but can leave the edges slightly (fitigued) lighter when using the darker colored coroplast. Or you could cheat like Kraut does and make your profile all straight cuts

I will probably cheat like Kraut and go with straight cuts so I don't waste anymore coro. I built another wing yesterday and it came out fine. No tapered ailerons or elevators. I am having toughts on the wing and feathers stability. They still seem flimsy to me even being 4mm coro. I have not been able to find any wooden dowels small enough to fit into the wings. Not sure how I am going to deal with this or if it will make much of a difference in the flight characteristics. Guess we will see. Thanks!
