Here is my upscaled Corrowot. She is 1.6 x 1.25 with a 61 up front.

It has a slight problem with the C/G. It needs about 700g in the nose..thats with every thing mounted at the front.

I have 2 options, Mount the ASP400 or extend the 61 engine 160mm...

Hi jaav
I would move the wing back, along with the landing gear.

jaav 04-18-2010 06:35 PM

RE: New bird

thats a major task!

RE: New bird

Hi jaav
I agree, it is difficult. On my SPAD Biplane I made a mistake on my CG location and had to move both wings back. As I build I keep the CG in mind at every step. Usually I end up very good, but occasionally I screw up. Part of the experience. I try to leave options so I can move things.

I started this in Feb and got the plans mixed up during the build.

RE: New bird

1st flight was good, a nice and gental run with low rates perfect landing. the opened up the rates and had fun..Very little trim was required, the only faults I found is real bad rudder flutter to the pint is disconects the tail wheel ( it has to move up 7mm it disconect the link) She is a lot more stable upside down so I might mount the U/C on the wing as well and it needs a bit more down thrust.

have vids on all 5 flights. The last 4 flights had a H9 P51 doing combats with me, a lot of fun...Will mount a much bigger engine on her in a week or 2 (Ryobi).

Congratulations! You flew and still have the plane! Such a deal! Good going. Quite a sense of accomplishment, wasn't it? Thanks; Ernie P.

Havent had a crash for a while now...The rudder has CF all the way through it and down through the bottom of the fuse.
More runs tomorrow..

I'll bet the flutter problem is with the rudder balance. Can you run a CF rod horizontally through the balance, and into the rudder itself? Thanks; Ernie P.

jaav 04-25-2010 06:26 PM

RE: New bird

I had all ready before the 1st flight..If it sill does it the balance is coming off.

RE: New bird

The flutter changed to a drumming so I cut the balance off. No more problems..

After doing low speed work, the nose droped regained controll for a sec then turned into a mud dart....

After cleaning her up for the next run, the radio system was dead..Dont know whats going on yet.. This is the 2nd day of use for this new radio. My 1st 2.4ghz.

A vid of the last flight yesterday.

See? I sometimes know what's happening. <g> Check the voltage on your transmitter battery. If the voltage drops, the system will recycle; and while its recycling, you're locked out. It may be your TX battery just ran out of juice on the last flight. Thanks; Ernie P.

jaav 04-26-2010 03:44 AM

RE: New bird

TX battery recharged last night still is 9.4v. the RX has 2 batteries for back up and were charged last night as well and rated @ 2.25A 6v..Will check the radio tonight. This unit binds in 1 sec....

Well just ran the radio up and it work straight away!!??

Have left it on for the last 1hour untill the TX started to beep at 8.5v and the system still works....

More testing needed..

After 3 tanks of problem free flying, I made her swim in the ocean. Landed short and touched down on the edge of the water flipping her over as she floated in the waves.

Ok vids of the last weeks flying, Crashes, power loss, hard landings, swimming and blood.

Do you think it will fly? I cant get the CoG right...

spaceworm 05-04-2010 10:46 AM

RE: New bird

I think that muffler you have under the engine is much to heavy, maybe remote mount it toward the rear about 50 feet, that should help the balance.

Or, just mail the engine to me, I am about 1500 miles away, that offset should help.:D

GOOD LUCK!!

jaav 05-04-2010 10:58 AM

RE: New bird

I think it will suffer from massive torque roll at idle and the UC has to be raised..

jaav 05-23-2010 06:38 AM

RE: New bird

I landed this girl in the ocean 2 weeks ago..Distracted landing....There is a vid of it along with blood on the wing on the tube (RC Broome) Today did a high Alfa with no speed and way too low, (read showing off) wing droped past 90 and hit the water again with the wing this time , yep she floats. Ran her up again and found it real sluggish in the turns and wanted to roll all the time...After landing found the wing to fuse pins made out of CF had split all 3 and the wing was moving..its a wounder it stayed up there..now she's going for the big refit....New engine 32cc and sprout an extra wing...

Ok guys after doing a High Alpa with dumb thumbs and twisting the fuse, I finaly got the Ryobi conversion motor running.
Vid of it , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSMy-1oGa7c

It was looking for a new bird for it so here it is....

Very interesting, and may be a way to use up some of my extra wings. It looks like the top wing is a thicker airfoil than the bottom. Is this true or just camera angle? Thanks and Good Job.

Sincerely,

Richard

Ok after a week of getting the P-47 up to 1st flight mode[8D], Got back into the Corrowot Bipe. Some more build pics. The inside of the fuse has been boxed up with ply for the wing mounts. The engine bay will need some more and the UC will have to be raised or a 3 blade prop. She's heavy...But built like a brick shizen house.;)

RE: New bird

Ok an update. Ran the motor last week and could'nt keep it running at idle carby problems. Tried another type and she wont rev past 5k rpm, will with a smaller prop but this is a big bird the comp is too low as this is one of the single ring blower motors with no grunt. ordered a new 30cc motor today. The Ryobi will power something else like a profile 3D

wow, a very cool bipe! good luck on the engine new engine

RE: New bird

Ok got back to the bird this week.
New engine fitted but now too light on the nose, The Ryobi is twice the weight as the new one. Just have to plumb up the fuel refit the wings, stop the fuse from flexing at the firewall and hopefully running this week end.

jaav 08-20-2010 09:55 AM

RE: New bird

Tried to balance the Bipe tonight. need 1 starter battery in the nose!!!over a kilo..
Stripped her down and redrilled the fuse to bring the wings back 2", checked twice and still stuffed up one side by 1/2' The joining tube is a bit out of alignment. Had refill the hole and trying again in the morning.

jaav 08-26-2010 09:58 AM

RE: New bird

Update..Still didnt get the hole for the tube correct..A bit of filing and grinding. Refitted the wings didnt shift the upper wing and the CG is about right..
Ran the new engine today. love gassers, low stable idle and a clean prop wash( no metho). Ran it for 10 mins or so. My 1st spark engine plane.
Just have to fir the top deck on.
Pretty?? No way...

Nice plane, jaav . Not to many try the biplane; a lot of added work, plus a crash involves more repairs. I love them. I totaled my SPAD biplane a few months ago. I never had one bad landing with it, except the last one when it got WAY ahead of me. I'm drawing up the plans for my next one. Keep up the good work and show us the flying photos.

Ok ran her up tonight, and did a taxi run untill the prop turned into a trencher as a wheel fell into a hole..Have to make here a dual boggie as the tires are flat spoted.

jaav 08-27-2010 09:26 AM

RE: New bird

Sorted out the wheel problem, Forgot that I had some 3 1/2" wheels I got for it. Just finished sheeting the top of the fuse where the wing was originaly. Wind permiting Maiden on sunday....

Hi jaav
Are you using a servo for each of the 4 ailerons? What does it weigh?

Well shes ready!!!!!!

changed all the wing mounting bots to quality 4mm with nylocs, Made a 2 piece deck cover which slides in a channel to lock in.

maiden tomorrow Wind or no wind. With this sort of weight i dont think wind is going to be a problem..
