ORIGINAL: RockyTop

Doug: I just built an whole new stub wing. It gives me 3/8ths of an inch clearance between the fuselage and the wing T.E. That way I can swing the 9 inch props the Fp .25's like. Are you using fuel pumps on your engines or relying on muffle pressure to get the fuel to the carbs? I'm going to try the muffle pressure route.

Hey rocky,
what are the specs for this new stub wing? Length, width, etc. The stock plans recommend a sort of laminate that tapers. Did you strengthen the wood or otherwise tinker with the base dimensions?

I'm sorry that I didn't take better measurements before I installed the new stub wing but now that it is glued in and the fuse center section is in place over it these are all I can give you. From the outer fuselage skin to the inside engine mount cut out is 4 and 5/8ths of an inch. From the outer fuselage skin to the outside or furthest point on the stub wing is 7 and 3/4ths of an inch. As for the angle, I mounted the engines with props in place and then used a 3/8ths of an inch spacer between the prop tips and the trailing edge of the wing so I would be a uniform amount of clearance there and then sanded the stub wing center points until they joined nicely and then nailed the stub wing down at that angle. I hope this explanation helps. I now have 3/8ths of an inch prop tip clearance at the T.E.'s and a little more than that between the fuse skin and the props. I didn't change anything else on the construction of the stub wing, it is laminated as per plans and seems plenty strong as it is.

A-10 would be a great project. I am interested however, don't really know where to start. I am interested in using some OS.25 FX engines I have kicking around. Just not sure of plans for that size of motor, ie wingspan, lenght and weight. Any info would be appreciated.

Craig.

Hi Craig,
Both Sina and RockyTop (both have posts on this thread) are building Keith Sparks A-10s of that size. Asking them would be a good place to start. Good luck

Craig: The plans for a "Stand Off" scale A-10 with a 61 inch wingspan powered by either 2 FP .25's or two FX .25's are available through Model Airplane News magazine. There was a building article on it done back in that magazine in July 2001. The weight is supposed to be 7.5 pounds with a 700 sq in wing area. I have mine 90% completed and it weighs 7.5 pounds without having any weight added to the nose to balance it. I still have to do that to mine and so far it looks like it will need nearly a pound to get the CG right. I'm using the lighter FP engines so with FX's you will have to add more weight than I will up front. Its a simple airplane for a twin jet look-alike and has not been easy to build but does come out looking pretty nice for not a lot of money. It isn't really hard to build but the sequence of the building is very different from the standard airplane that has the engine up front. The wing is really just a trainer wing so according to the designer it flies really nice. Cowls and other plastic parts are available from the designer for 40 bucks and they are of good quality. Best of Luck and have fun. Once I get mine finished I will post a report on how it flies. I won't be able to work on it for a couple of weeks so the first flight is still aways off.

Thanks for the info. I think it would be a fun build, and a fun plane to fly. I will have to dig up some info on the plans.

Default RE: A-10 Project

hi Craig,
I included two links below with references to the two different plans that i considered. Mike Pastro's version is a pusher .40, with all the trouble that goes with a pusher - but Mike is very good at explaining things. I settled on Keith's plans as I wanted to try a twin. I gotta let you know that Keith assumes that you are good at plan building. in other words, a lot of detail is missing, so you have to study the thing for a couple of days before jumping in. Earlier in this thread you should read RockyTop's challenges.

a guy at the field had one with undersized FP motors as well as trimmed props and he got two flights out of it. The last one with a highspeed crash into the grass at the end of the runway!

I am going to invest in two FX's as mine promises to be heavy and will definitely do what RockyTop did by elongating the stub wing to allow a standard prop. The article talks about three blades trimmed back and candidly I am not that good and will end up messing up expensive props.

I have a bunch of correspondence with Keith that I posted earlier - you should read those as well.

altogether though, I am happy so far. I am behind Canuck1 and a little ahead of RockTop in building mine. I have a couple of pictures and threads elsewhere posted on how to install retracts and so on that may be usefull to you.

Good luck and post lots of pictures.

Sina

HELP!!
If anyone following this thread has a clue of the control serface throws, Please post them.
Paul and I are scratching our heads about the elevator, rudder, and flap throws. We're just about to the point where we need this info and would hate to stop construction for lack knowledge.

Thanks,
Doug

Here is what Keith Sparks recommends:

elevator - 3/4"
Rudder - 3/4"
Aileron - 1/2"

It sounds about right when you consider the flat bottom airfoil and the tapered aileron. The elevator is "barn-door" and therefore at 3/4" throw should be pretty responsive. And the rudder is not gonna give you any knife-edge but will suffice for those low speed corrections on landing!

Of course there is no substitute for adding a 1/4" on dual rates but ALWAYS fly with the slow rates at pecs first - right fellas?

One more thing...

What does your rudder linkage look like? It looks very complicated on the plans and I can't even visualize how it would work. Do you know what I am talking about?

Thanks for the numbers Sina. Those number seem pretty realistic to me.
The plans don't give any throws at all so I'm trying to get opinions from everyone I can. I have to run differential rates on the ailerons. With the high lift wing you need more up aileron than down. Thank god for computer radios.
The rudders are a bellcrank in the center of the stab. From there, a pushrod to each fin which also have a bellcrank in them and then to the rudders.

Thanks Again,
Doug

The fitting of the wing. Man this thing has a thick airfoil. I didn't really notice it until I put it on the fuse.

Thanks Rich. Sure seems like a slow process to me. Wish I had more time to work on it. I've got a big Hellcat waiting in the wings so it's kinda hard to stay focused on the A-10.

Nacelle hatches. I still need to do some trimming on them.
