cyclone project progress

Finally I have time, on my vacation, to make some progress on my current project, the Cyclone 30.
It is a 46" ws design styled like a 30"s racer, powered by a Magnum 30 fourstroke. Lots of problems with the build but this is only the first version. Version 2 will incorporate a lot of modifications and have an Axi 2020 on 8 cells.
I will post a few times to get the pix in.

Thanks. I like your Vee Bee very much by the way.
Actually I had earlier built two 65" wing span versions of this design a few years ago but they are a lot of work to transport and assemble for flight so I decided to create a smaller version. The first ones had a Saito 91 and a Saito 120.

I am covering it now. I decided on Cub Yellow because it is small and I don't see that well anymore.
I had to precut the Ultracoat for the side to work around the wing flare. The horizontal stab was added after the covering but there will be some trim fillets added later to hide the glue better. Also I had to cover the bottom last so the rear links could be slipped in place after covering the sides.

Now there is the wingtips and rest of the trim to add. I prebalanced it for the electric version which will be started after this one, with the Magnum30 4-stroke, flys. Now I can figure where to put the batterypack and whether I will need a lot of nose weight, which would favor nicads over lithiumpoly.

DMP!, Thanks for the compliment. I have no plans at this point for drawings but I will kit it as soon as I can work out the problems and simplify the build a little.
I did (actually had a friend fly it) the maiden flight last Saturday. It was a little sensitive on pitch and roll, which is easy to adjust now that it is trimmed out. The main problem is the engine sagged after a couple of minutes and is apparently overheating, which made for a tense landing since another plane was in the landing process and my pilot had to stretch for another go-around. Now I am chopping at the front of the plane to get better airflow. I will also install a baffle to encourage the air to go where it is needed.
More later in a week or two after the next test flights.

I have completed my modifications; a much larger exit scoop behind the engine and a baffle to better direct the air. The cowl has been opened up too. This should do the trick.

Last Saturday I tested it (on the ground) for overheating and the modifications have fixed the problem. It was too windy to test fly however.
Today we tried again. Jerry Nichols - a good pilot at the Chula Vista field - did the honors. I took the controls for a little while too.
It is small and not easy for me to see. Also very quick and responsive. I will tame it down a little before going on. There are a number of modifications to the design before I order laser cutting for any kits but maybe in 6-8 months I can get it out.
