The canopy and hatch is a QQ. Your yak is 3-4" shorter? Did you take into account the spinner. Most of the planes count the spinner in their total length. Love the Jig.

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
Good news tonight...my cutter told me that I should be getting the replacement parts on Monday or Tuesday which is way earlier than we had expected. Should have everything glued together by the end of next week.
I might get this in the air by the end of March if the weather is ok.
Cheers,
John

Simply awesome looking bird
Where'd you find the cardboard guide tube? Is that .25" inner diameter? I ended up making my own by wrapping my wingtube in waxed paper then laying up fiberglass around it and used thin epoxy.
Cheers,
John

Dear John,
I am a aeromodeller from Sevilla, Spain. I have had following with interest the development of your Yak 54 plans. I would like a lot to construct this plane. Is it possible to receive your plans? Thank your very much in advance for your attention.

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
Viper thanks! Hope this one flies as nice as the QQ.
Cosme, it's probably my fault for not making things clear. I've decided not to release the plans since there would be very little point due to the complexity. There really is no option but to have them laser cut. Even CNCing them would not be up to the task. I'm also worried about them falling into the hands of less scrupulous people who would look to turn a profit off someone else's work.
I certainly do appreciate all the interest you and others have shown. I puff out my chest a little bit when someone asks for the plans Seriously though, I've decided the best avenue to pursue is to have a run of the kit made so that we can get a discount. I'd definitely look into having them cut in Europe as well if that made sense from a shipping perspective.
Finally, the version I am currently working on is in what I'd refer to as "Beta". The final plan won't be set in stone until the current version is built and successfully put through the proverbial "wringer".
Having said all that, I am really excited to get this thing into the air and have some video of it so you guys can decide for yourself whether it merits a second look or not. I am targeting the end of this month for that.
Hope that clears things up a bit.
Cheers,
John

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
Good news,
The new parts came in today and I have now assembled the fuse. I still need to add a couple things here such as stringers, which should total an additional 5 or 6 ounces. The fuse and firewall combined weigh 1 lbs 9 ounces. It should come in well under 2 lbs when complete. To give some perspective, my BME Edge fuse and firewall weighed 3lbs 2oz and I thought that was light! If all the other components I am assembling were to be equal in weight to my Edge then I'd be looking at an all up weight of around 15lbs 6 ounces. I am quite confident that it will come in well below that and will be in my target range of 14.5 to 15 lbs. Considering everything about this design will be larger than my EF Yak and BME Edge, I'm guessing this thing will be a ball of fun to fly. The wing area alone will be about 10% greater on my design over the EF Yak. Of course, it remains to be seen if the construction and design techniques I've chosen will be up to the task of some serious "hucking"!
Tomorrow will see me finishing the fuse but first I'll have to go to the store and pick up some more medium CA...one bottle just isn't enough
Cheers,
John

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
I finished setting the wing incidence today. It took about 5 min. One side was perfect the other was 1/4 degree off. I had to trim about 3/32" off the balsa saddle and then it was spot on. Here is a pic of the wing bolts, anti rotation pins and switches installed. I also spoke with Wayne at QQ aircraft today. He gave me permission to mold the cowl and canopys for my airplane. I will be able to supply canopys and cowls for my design if I end up kitting it.

I am using monocote. I am working on the scheme now. I hate this part, it is tough to come up with something original that looks cool and is easy to see. I should start covering it by the end of the week end. I am hoping to maiden it next weekend.
Here is the first wing with the ail. cut out. It has 3/8 balsa glued in for the hinge line. It is now ready to be double beveled and hinged.
Quick question. Is the CA, WY for Casper Wyoming? I am from Powell WY.

Hi Brent
If you are not sure or tired of cutting the trims from monocote than the better way is to settle for the printed covering of vinyl, these look so professional that, iron on people can only dream of it, it is light weight and looks great.

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
I've used vinyl on my last couple of airplanes and wouldn't use anything else in the future. I even hand cut it myself. I think I am going to do the airplane in bright orange with white and black trim.
Brent that's great news about the cowls and canopies! Really nice of the QQ guys but I would get it in writing though...
Cheers,
John

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
Not a bad idea about getting it in writing. If I end up doing a lot of kits than I will do that. If this plane takes off and some other company wants it to kit then we will probably have to negotiate some kind of royalty to QQ. But that is something down the road and the chances are that it won't happen. Vinyl is nice!! I will be hand cutting monocote for this one. It just takes some time to think up the scheme and then make the posterboard templets. I am giving myself a week to cover. That way I won't burn myself out on it and do a half ass'd job.

Just figured I put up a couple progress pics. In the first one, you can see the sheeting I've completed. On the second one, you can see what the right side looks like prior to sheeting. The rest are self-explanatory The whole thing weighs 2lbs and I need to add sheeting to the right side plus the rudder post which should and about 3 or 4 more ounces.
Cheers,
John

Very, very, very NICE!!! I need to figure out how to do the cheeks built up. I took the easy way and made it from foam. I have not yet been able to down load solidworks. My cad is pretty tough to do that kind of stuff with. But hey it only cost me $16.00 on ebay.
The plane looks amazing and light. I cant wait tell the next update.

Just a general comment, not directed at anyone in particular, and I know of no one personally who will take any action:
If people are concerned about unscrupluous other people who would use other's intellectual property without compensating them for it, such as a model airplane design, I hope those same first people do not use other's intellectual property, such as CAD software, especially for commercial purposes, without paying for it and complying with the softare developer's license agreement.
