I have no reason to hide or not share this element of the build. What really going on is, I have 4 ESC wires coming through the wing out the centre section of this wing. When I initially programmed my ESCs individually, all were ok and when I made my roll out video, all motors started as suppose to. Well issues started after the roll out video, any time I would have the model stored and when I wanted to run the engines, either ESC's would beep constantly or one or two motors will turn and others would beep!. I traced the issues to connections of 3 Y harnesses that I had to connect in order to have 1 port going into single throttle channel!. To fix the beeping issue, I would disconnect the Y harnesses and reconnect them and all 4 motors would start.

Recently I bought Spetkrum AR12120 receivers brand new for this model to bind with my DX18 TX. Couple friends also suggested to use 2 receivers on the model, one to power the throttles only and other for all flight controls. I am also told the length of the wires coming through the wing is a lot longer and that's why I'm having this signal loss problem.

Paul, I'm using 2 x 6s 5000 mah Lipos to power the motors only and use separate nicad battery to power rest of the flight controls through receiver. Since these both are done, I'm looking to buy 6s 6000 mah lipos to fly this model on. Each esc at max uses 45amps and I have 60A esc's on these motors.

Sam,
Solder the connections for the esc together rather than using the y plugs. Twist the leads to the receiver, and use toroid coils on them as well to minimize rf crosstalk.

Paul,

What are Toroid coils and how would I put them on the leads?

Edit: Got it, they are those small doughnuts that comes with some ESC's.

Partial question remains, how do I put them on already insulated wires?

3rd,

I bought AR12120 receiver to plug in 3 throttles leads on different channels and then mix them all with actual throttle channel. I'm going to install RX right above the wing saddle to keep all leads shorter. I think I will have to make adaptors for all the wiring coming through the wing into the fuselage and leave the adaptors on the receiver when wing is taken apart for transportation and storage purposes.

You just wrap a few of turns of the 3 lead servo wire around the ferrite core at the esc end, and just before the plug for the receiver. So this means you will use 2 "doughnuts" on each lead worse case. Usually you can get away with just putting them on the receiver end, sometimes both.

Consider these as well. These units are popular with the jet community.

I brought this RX due to its ability to deliver equal power to all flight controls through 10v power provided with two batteries for redundancy. ...

So it sounds like ur saying to add power box on top of this RX?, is that's so...

Got it, well do as you said.

Would these be needed on flaps and ailerons, rudder and elevator power wires also as they are much longer then ESC signal wires...

Check the specifications of each unit. Those units are not only battery backers but also helps with long wires. You will not need any ferrite doughnuts if using these units. As I said these are quite popular with the jet people (personally I think they are mandatory in such an environment)

I am just finishing up my Don Smith Connie. It will be powered with 4 , 5030 electric motors. I modeld it after the 1049C. Putting a large cargo door in the forward fuse, to service the 8 batteries. So far so good. The paint scheme is the Eastern Air Lines air shuttle version. I will be finishing the paint now that it has warmed up. I was able toinstall three small servo`s in each vertical fin to operate the rudders. Tight fit but it works. I went with the split flaps...Panel lines with rosie riveter rivets, which I need more of, but I guess they are not available any more.

Wll, I did have, but I just got my computer back from repair, and all of my picture of the whole build seem to be missing. Grrrrr!

Dymnnnn!, was looking forward to seeing your great Connie build...

I also have servos in each outer fins for rudders and one inside fuselage for center rudder. I bought eflites tri-gear wire harness to connect servo wires into single rudder channel on RX.

Default connie

Those pic`s should get me going again. I ran out of steam this spring. I beganto wonder why I build these things when I don`t fly. Most of the work I have left to do on my Connie is just paint, which I have already started in the Eastern air lines colors. It will probably only go to the static display stage. Sure looks great flying though.

Oh: I built my model from the Don Smith plans, and is 134" wing span, built after the 1049C Connie, which we used for cargo as well as passengers. The picture was in Presque Isle, Maine on a charter for the Vahlsing co.

Nothing beats the sound of 4 internal combustion engines all in sync doing a fly by. Electric just doesn’t do it the same justice.

I thought props4ever was going to use a sound system to reproduce the sound of the four R-3350 engines. I think if you could blast the sound around 100db or more it would sound pretty good. Not sure how big a speaker that would take to do 100db.

I am running a sound system at 92 db it’s the loudest it gets. Barley passable for a 64 inch MXS. I am running the max 6S lipos and two 4 inch speakers if there are other internal combustion motors running the sound system is pretty limited. By itself it’s passable. Larger scale or multi engine application its going to be pretty anemic. I bought this for a possible 80 inch mustang project I am not sure if its worth the extra effort to install it. I like the idea especially having gun sounds, led gun flashes and the ability to hear the canopy opening and gear cycling however if its not loud enough to be heard over the others flying it sort of defeats the purpose. The power required to increase the db level is not practical. I programmed a Merlin into the sound system and did a low pass man it just doesn’t have the presence. The plane approaches but the sound never reaches the volume you expect. It sounds like its passing overhead at altitude. My speakers are fully open to the outside bottom of the model with speaker grills painted to match the fuselage. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Well guys it's seems as I don't have that desire in me now days to fly this bird. I have been procrastinating on couple things to finish on it but it's not in me to do so anytime soon. I'm guilty of saying it will be done in couple weeks over few times but reality is I'm very afraid of losing it and it will hurt me a a lot God forbid if it happened!. This bird means a lot to me and it costed me In thousands to build it not to mention years it took to be built, so maybe I'll get over this hard step n will fly it before the end of this year, time will tell. Lately it feels as if I'm pushing myself to finish her up and that feeling just puts me off. I really don't know what it is but it is what it is. Hope some of you guys can understand my feeling.

I've found that when I push myself too hard to finish a plane to get it out to the field quickly to fly, that's when I make mistakes that usually end up in losing the aircraft. Take your time and when you're ready to finish up the plane then do it when you're ready. Getting in a hurry on a bird this beautiful can only end in an ugly death. I doubt anybody here on is going to fault you for taking your time in finish this up when you are ready.
