best 4 stroke for Goldberg Cub on floats
Hi all. I just bought a Goldberg Cub with built up balsa floats. I'd like to have it fly scale-like with a bit of surplus power to get me out of unintended situations. Can anyone recommend what size/type four stroke to mount? Thanx. .. Ken

I saw one fly with a .60 Fox 2C and it screamed, so I don't think you can overpower it too much. Those balsa floats are pretty heavy. I use the same set on my Cloud Dancer 60. I would consider a least a .70 or larger for a 4C. The guy from our LHS has one of those new ARF flying boats that looks like a SeaMaster. He put the new Magnum 50 size 4C (I think it's a 52?) and it was WAAAYYYYY underpowered.

RE: best 4 stroke for Goldberg Cub on floats
Hello; I have a friend (Al) who has a Goldberg cub with a Saito 80 in it that just will not leave the water. The two times I did manage to get it into the air, I had to leap off a boat wake or a water skier wake. Once in the air it did fine. I have seen them with OS 70's Saito 65's, OS 61's, all work okay off wheels and floats. I have seen one years ago that just had an OS 40FP, that worked pretty good too.

My friend has that plane on floats(heavy ones) and had a HP .61 in it until it wore out. He then put in a Saito .65 and it flies awesome. Takes off well, plenty of power, good economy. We float fly out of my boat at 35+mph and it's pretty cool to fly just a few feet above and ahead of yourself at that speed. The sound and wind is awesome. Theo only drawback is the castor oil from the exhaust will get in your eyes if you're close enough.[8D]

donkey doctor,
While the Saito 80 isn't the best of the Saito line, it should still power the Cub. Ask your friend how the floats are set up. The TOP of the Floats should have about 2 degrees of negative incidence compared to the wing.

Doug .. I just asked a friend exactly the same question you asked about the YS 63 FZ. His reply was that a pumped, supercharged engine on a float plane isn't following the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle. He said if I dunk the airplane - and there's a good chance that'll happen sooner or later - that the greater the complexity of the engine, the greater the likelihood of difficulties after dunking it. That sounded like a reasonable premise, but I - like you - would like to hear other opinions about using the YS 63 FZ on the Goldberg Cub on floats. .. Ken

Hello; I will pass that on to Al. I know he wants to get that lovely plane up and flying. He does have an Airsail Beaver on floats that he hasn't used for two years now.

RE: best 4 stroke for Goldberg Cub on floats
OK...you guys have me a little worried!
I have a Goldberg Cub I'm resurrecting from a long rest and adding the Goldberg Cub Floats, which I started 14 years ago! I picked up an OS 90 4-stroke to put in it, but after reading the posts, I'm wondering if that is too much engine? I figured bigger is better to get it off the water, and the 90 IS suggested by Goldberg.
Any comments, advice or experience?

Another vote for the Saito 65. My Goldberg flies great off the water or land. Plenty of power for the floats. It will lift off easy with less than full throttle. Not as scale sounding as the twins, but nice enough for the money.

Hello. About 6 years ago I had a Goldberg Cub and ran A OS 91 four stroke. It was great. it caught everyones attention and it flew great. I am building a Cub Again to go back into flying and i just ordered the YS 63, they say it is a great power plant. I know I will be happy to have it in the Cub.

DonkeyDoc, I sent you a PM with the wrong pic attached.
Al's cub does not need more power, I guarantee the floats are installed with the wrong incidence.
See the attached pic of a properly rigged Kadet: Wings at about positive 4 degrees to the top of the floats.
Compare to the Nose-High floats/Tail High Cub shown in the Tower Hobbies catalog: The tail of the Cub is easily four inches higher than it should be. When he tries to rotate for takeoff all he will do is dig the tails of the floats into the water.

RE: best 4 stroke for Goldberg Cub on floats
for what it's worth,
i have 3- 80" cubs and all are on floats. 2 goldberg and 1 h9, and 1 of the gb has a ys91ac and is on gb floats (it will hang the prop). #2 gb same setup as above w/os91s and flies great (off the water in <50'). the h9 has a os70s, and is on commander rc floats on my 5/52 custom wire gear and flies just fine.
the gb cubs are heavy vs the h9. an os70/90 will be fine (70=more scale).
also have a balsa usa 1/3 on their floats and have a bme100 up front (its off in 10' hehehe).
