...especailly when kits were less than 10 bux when I was a kid...

Mind you, at 200 hours I imagine it would be pretty spectacular. Some of the plastic modelers are artists when it comes to scale...

Hello! hope someone is still interested in this project. Seems like a waste to let such a nice plane go unmodeled.

If anyone is interested I will post some pics of the PBY-5 I am making a plug for a mold. 108" wingspan. The progress may be a bit slow as the downer day job gets in the way but I will work as fast as possible. Just to let anyone know, this will be kitted so anyone interested let me know. I can also start a new thread if you guys think that is advisable.

Happy building. Kevin.

There are pictures of a modelled PBM at the North Dallas R/C Club web site
ndrcc.com
Scroll down to the bottom of the 11th Annual Float Fly picture page
You will also find a link to the builders web site
Hope this helps

It dose make a nice one. Hey lets all make up like ten of them and park them beside this guys at their next fly in! I'm sure this guy feels bad to be the only one there with a PBM. Why we could all paint ours like his too so people will think they are all ARF's

Nony: We are going to try it with 60 size 2 strokes first. We may have to do some adjusting to mototr angles, splash rail etc. to get it off the water and to stop too much spray into the props. If these do not work we will go bigger.

If you have any suggestions, feel free...

That has been the problem with the PBY's that I have seen. If they get too heavy, they sit too low in the water, and get water in the props. I have not seen one as large as the one you are building, though, so hopefully size does make a difference.....

Relax Guys, I have two PBM's. 8 foot span, 6 foot fuse. Powered by either .45's or .52 4 stroke. The plans are finished and so is the article. I'll be turning it in soon. I'd bet it will be available for your next winter project.

Now if I can figure out how to attach the photos........

I have tracked down the designer of the 118" PBM and he still has plans for sale. If any of you are still interested let me know and I will put you in touch with him. There are (I think) seven sheets with a lot of detail including the cockpit.
Vise 101, he is interested in the kit idea, let me know if you wish to pursue it.

The 118" PBM you are talking about that Jon N. built , I first saw it fly in 1971 at Brimfield Dam in Brimfield Mass. There's a float fly there at the end of May and Labor day that Don Foster of Gee Bee products puts on. Jonh flys it at both dates. From what I recall it has two ST75 electric start has Estes rockets for take off, that looks wild. It's all foam fuse fiberglassed wing foam balsa. the outer wings hook on with a piano hinge top and bottom. If you can make the float fly it is good. It's dates are in AMA mag

Jetranger, The plans I am talking about are by Ed Zematis and are of wood and ply construction. I have a set of them and there is no foam in the plane construction.

Default FOAM ?

Hi, it's me again. Could some one please tell me what is so wrong with building from foam?
It cant be because its heavier; because a flying buddy of mine built a Top flight corsair from the kit and I took his plans and made one from foam......mine was 1.5 pounds lighter.
It cant be the cost because the kit cost Is way more than $60. that's what mine totaled including paint. Keep in mind I'm only talking airframes. Perhaps its the time required, personally I build faster using foam but then again I've made allot of planes this way. I'm sure there is a learning curve involved.

Sparkie: Absolutely nothing is wrong with foam. It's used in wing cores all the time. I think maybe some people just aren't used to working with it. I have a deHavilland Caribou that has a foam fuse( although I am going to make some glass ones from it )

In the end it is whatever turns your crank.

Sparkie, if you are talking to me I did not say there was anything wrong with foam, I was just descibing the construction of the PBM plans from Zematis.

Jllayton,
No, it wasn't meant for any one person. Sometimes when I bring the foam planes out and the questions start; people find out that its a "fomie" the interest fades fast.
nothing negative is said but I can see it on their faces " why would any one build a plane from foam?"

The reason I asked is because I've been taking notes on the subject. I plan to write a book on the basics of building from foam. I believe that you don't see many foam designs because most don't know how to approach the project. The people at Combat Models had the right idea but they didn't have an entry level kit to introduce people to foam building. Perhaps a how to book is needed.

Sparkie, a book on foam constuction is probably a good idea. It always seemed to me that a plane could be built faster that way, especially with some of the composite materials available.
I have made a couple of cowls and such but never tackled a whole plane.

Those of you interested in the 118" PBM plans contact Ed Zemaitis at [email protected]. He is the cioyright owner and has plans for sale. Good luck
