Hey there peoples...
Wondering if yo guys could help me decide on a suitable 4 stroke ( cycle ) engine to power my KMP / ESM DH Beaver.
from other threads I believe this bird ( with floats on ) could weigh up to 22lbs? 18lbs at least.
I have a YS 120 SC FS and a Saito FA 180 FS engines.
Look forward to any responces... Thanks

Either one of the engines you describe should work well. I don't think the plane will be quite as heavy as you suggest. We have flown them with an Irvine 120 2 stroke as well as a Zenoah G26. My Unionville Beaver which is the same size, is going to get a Saito 120 FS and I expect it to have plenty of power. The Beaver is not a pattern bird, so fly it like the real one (on the wing) and you should have no trouble.

So, what engine did you put in her?
I would have gone 4 stroke, as some of the electronics can get screwed up if you get salt water on the connections in a Gas banger.
But, never with a 4 stroke.
Let us know.
Cheers,
Jim

I was refering to a couple of the local fliers with their choices. The Beaver is good in that you can put in a heavy engine and still not have to worry about it being nose heavy. I know the Irvine 120 powered one required a fair amount of ballast but I'm not sure how much. My Saito powered one is still being assembled so I'm not sure where it will turn out. Another one around here has been flown with a Saito 180 and it had lots of power. I'm sure a well set up Beaver with a good 90 or 108 would fly well also. Use a prop in the larger diamerer and lower pitch range for your engine to get lots of thrust for take off and also to provide some braking for landing approach.
Personally I would stay away from salt water with any plane.
Be sure to refer to some of the earlier posts regarding float set up as what is provided is geometrically incorrect. It will save you lots of headaches.
Merry Christmas,
Peter

Thank you Peter,
You also referred to some of the earlier posts regarding float set up as what is provided is geometrically incorrect.
Where do I find these posts?
Regarding engine choice, Saito 3 cyl SAFA170R3 developes approx. 2 HP. Are you sure that will be enough?
I have recently ordered my KMP Beaver and have to make a right engine choice.
Best regards
Mikael

I have just purchased a Beaver too, and also trying to decide on engine choice. From all the info I have read, You will need a 3 plus h.p engine too get it off the water, but the 3 cyl. would sound awesome. I am going to purchase a gas , just dont know which one.
here are my 5 top choices. Somebody help me out and set me in the right direction
ZDZ 40 rv-l
3w 28i
Brillelli 46gt
evolution 35
Zenoah 45
Which one would you use? for reliability, easy start, doesnt shake the plane apart.

Hi guys... Happy New Year to you all, and hope you had a great Chhristmas's too.
My main choice of engine is now the SAITO 180 FS, by all accounts so far it'll have tons of grunt ( and more than enough for ski use ) otherwise I have a YS 120 SC to use.
As yet I haven't managed to put much time into the assembly of my new Beaver, but here's a few things I intend doing... your thoughts are appreciated.
1, I don't care too much for the blue color on the leading edges, can I paint this covering?? I'd like to completely change the whole plane to an ARMY green as I have seen that the RAAF used "floated" Beavers.. Cool! make this a scale WARBIRD float plane eh??
2, I'd like some better looking scale type main undercarriage for land use, anyone done anthing here?? and also the tail wheel??
3, The other thing I will do is not to use the servo in the tail for the rudder and use a golden rod type arrangement. To do this I will make some sort of light former half way along the inside of the fuz ( also to stiffen the fuz sides somewhat )
Will go for now.. keep up your interest, ideas and let us know what you've done.
TTFN Cheers, Paul

What engine did you end up using? Also what did you find out about painting the covering? I have a ys 140 sport looking for a home and really love the DH Beaver!
Thanks!
Thanks!
