Most the time the theory "there's no replacement for displacement" holds true,
but if the critical angles are not set up right a bigger engine just makes a bad set up into a faster air-boat
A properly set up plane should be able to take off very close to the same speed it will land at.

Hi

I have had this problem and seen it on other planes.

The step is not always where it appears to be, put the plane on a flat surface with the wings level and see where the float touches it could be that it is in front of the actual step effectively moving the step forward when it is planing and not allowing it to take off.

If this is the case just stick a couple of wedge shaped bits at the actual step in order to make it deeper.
