I just measured what I have, and it's actually about 7/8". I think anything up to about 2" is Ok. It's a personal preference, and what you have available....

It's difficult for me to visualize how bubbles could backup from the carb, but if there are actually bubbles coming from the carb, it could mean there is a backflow of air, possibly from the intake...
