daffydd, I've seen the Carbon Yak fly and I wasn't impressed. It flew far too much like a foamy for my taste. If I wanted a foamy, I'd be going to a dedicated flat profile foamy and I'd go all-out...

Considering a new plane

Firstly, let me re-introduce myself. I've been a member here for a while, but have become a lot less active in the past few years. I was in college and designing, building, and flying airplanes for...

RE: Strongest 46 engine

Yeah, Saturday was a BAD day for me.  After our 2-2 start, I've pretty much given up on the season.  That's sad because this is my Senior year and my Season Tickets are pretty good.  I was hoping to...

RE: Strongest 46 engine

Yeah, DBF is most certainly electric. They've always been 100% and won't ever change.
This glow engine is for the SAE Heavy Lift competition.

Well they've been showing up for at least the...

RE: Strongest 46 engine

Well, I know for a fact that Georgia Tech DOES compete in the AIAA Design, Build, Fly competition....and that's MY competition.  This'll be five year and 6th plane that I've worked on.  4th year and...

RE: Strongest 46 engine

2walla, if you're talking about circulation control: that would be AWESOME to get to do.  However, it's not really worth it on an aircraft of this size....even though it's something all of us have...

RE: Strongest 46 engine

I'm sure 60mph would be plenty fast.  I'm in another collegiate design competition that flies electrics.  We fly 60-70mph on our speed missions and like 50mph on our heavily-laden missions.

RE: Strongest 46 engine

Sport_Pilot, you're fantastic for having read the rules.  I'm not on the team, so I haven't thoroughly read the rules.  I'm asking because I'm the only senior that has much R/C experience and I'm...

RE: Strongest 46 engine

As far as reasonable budget, I meant under $1000.  However, as I posted above, I think that the model of their engine is specified as an OS46AX.

RE: Strongest 46 engine

Sorry guys, I misread the rules.  They're given a model of engine they're supposed to use.  I think it's a 46AX.<div>

RE: Strongest 46 engine

Well, rated horsepower is about as useful as a poopy-flavored lollipop.  Manufacturers SUCK at maintaining consistency with how they rate rated power.

RE: Strongest 46 engine

The group purchasing this engine is a college-level design team.  There would be no need to move it to another plane.  Even if they want to reuse it, the competition always calls for a 46.<div>...

RE: Strongest 46 engine

That was one of my first thoughts.  My other thought was, just because there is no takeoff requirement, a Jett46.  I know they're not optimized for slow, heavy planes....but there is more power.

Strongest 46 engine

So, there is a limit to a glow engine running 15% fuel with a max displacement of 0.46 cubic inches. So, it's not just a "46-sized engine"....it's MAX displacement. The engine will be flying a VERY...

RE: Some experience not a lot.Question

Nitro, did you notice I provided links to both the big and small one?  Also, if you go with the small one (which I'd recommend)....I'd get an engine on the larger end.  You can always move that...

RE: Some experience not a lot.Question

Nitroholic...that's a good, mature decision to not go with the Sundowner.  You **could** successfully fly it IF you had a GREAT buddy to fly with, spent TONS of hours on a simulator, had incredible...

RE: My Dad's next plane?

Yeah, that style landing gear has never impressed me....but his Mustang PTS (RIP) had that same style gear.  That's another benefit of the Stik or the Edge.....that style of landing gear (one piece...

RE: My Dad's next plane?

I don't mean crashing....I just mean rough landings when he has an "off" day.  Sticks can handle VERY rough landings, whereas my Kyosho Spitfire was pretty picky about its landings.

RE: My Dad's next plane?

Sorry, let me clarify....he's not a "trainer" pilot.  He's pretty good.  He's been flying for YEARS.  Not 3D level, not MY level ;) , but still pretty good.  I hadn't looked at the Big Stik or the...
