I think it sounds like you just need a 2-D modeler to make drawings. Any CAD program released within the past 2 years can import and export DXF, DWG format which is the AutoCAD standard. Try out one...

Another site you might check out is the Jayhawk Modelmaster flying field just east of the Clinton Lake dam in Lawrence, KS. It's about a 35 minute drive from Overland Park, but it's well worth it....
