RE: Maximum altitude??

I guess I would differentiate the equations to find bestpoints to aim for, rather than feed them into excel for graphs. But now that I see the graphs side by I think your way is better.
Its easier...

RE: Maximum altitude??

Very good job!
You deserve credits for that.
Also nice to make graphs of it in excel.
If i were to do it, I would just stick up the calculations in plaintext.
Making graphs makes it a lot...

RE: Maximum altitude??

Aha, good job then :) I overlooked that you had taken thinner air into account.
Well thought =)

No, my real name isn't Von Ohain.
I choose the name because at the time I registered here, I...

RE: Maximum altitude??

I think you guys might have overlooked something in propeller selection.
Air is rapidly getting a lot thinner, and the correct propeller at sea level (where we modellers practically operate, and...

RE: Maximum altitude??

If you are hellbent on doing it with piston, you can do it with fuel injection motors (I believe OS had fuel injected competition grade engines for many years now. They are priced as if they were...

RE: Maximum altitude??

You can workaround it by having a servo operating the mixture needle.
However, this is "blacksmithing" at best and definetly not keeping it simple, if that is an aim.
Servo operated mixture...

RE: Maximum altitude??

Thrust determined by newtons law (throw air in one direction, and you get pushed by the same force in the other direction), is determined by M * V.
That is, the mass of the air the propeller...

RE: Maximum altitude??

IC motors is bad for high altitude because the air is thinner, and the carburettor of model IC motors isn't sophisticated enough to compensate.
So your motor will stop due to thin air even before...

RE: Maximum altitude??

Good post UStick.
I might add that full sizes also use variable pitch for much the same reason that a car uses a gearbox:
To allow the engine to spin within its useful operating range, across the...

RE: Maximum altitude??

Guys, this thread started so nicely, please don't corrupt it by TROLLING.
"This can't be done" attitude is trolling in my book, and if i were moderator I would delete such posts.

"Dirty air"...

RE: Maximum altitude??

Very good thread, you got lucky with this one IflyPATTERN!
Lots of good input, and the "let's do this!" attitude is present, rather than the typical "thats not possible!" attitude so often seen on...

RE: Maximum altitude??

Wing geometry matters more than that.
Sure, surface area and wing profile is major determinants for lift, but there is other factors to concider aswell.
Short span, long chord wings for example...

RE: Maximum altitude??

Hi Brandon!

Judging by the title of your thread, I assume you want to fly as high as possible.
I believe a glider is not the optimal platform for this purpose. No existing model plane, at...
