Default Computer geeks and RC go hand in hand

After re-reading *Crash* Johnson's thread about occupations, and seeing how many people support their hobby by being computer geeks, I have come to a generalization. Apparently, a fellow geek's propensity toward technical things attracts them to the world of RC. Is it the computer radios? Doubt it. It must be the mechanical end of things.

I'm curious. What are the comp techs most attracted to in this hobby? Flying? Building? The challenge? What else? I think for me it the mechanical end of things. I love to scratch build also.

I also noticed something else. I visit a tech forum often, www.pcmech.com . Anybody else a member there? I typed in RC over in their search field and didn't get too many hits (and they have a general discussion forum for stuff like that). If you fellow geeks ever need a wealth of computer info, go there. You guys are missing out. BTW, my handle over there is BFD Deadeye.

I'm looking forward to replies.

It's not the radios! (Ohh yay! If i turn the big wheel the little servo goes back and forth! Woo hoo!)

I am not a tech or anything, computers are just one of my side hobbies. I like gas cars and planes for the engines. They're just plain cool!

It probably would have been this way a long time ago, but computers haven't caught on till recently (by recently I mean the last 10 years or so)

Computers are a way of life and alot of the same people who have a pretty high aptitude for computers and technology can adapt in the RC world fairly easily. Plus they usually make decent money and can afford a fairly expensive hobby like this one.

Signed,
A computer geek

I've been in electronics since I was 9 years old and found "The Boys First Book of Radio and Electronics" It had a 1 tube shortwave regenerative receiver built on breadboard. I've been involved with PC since Radio and Electronics published their first issue on computers. It had switches and lights on the front panel! Getting it to use a cassette tape recorder to store programs was a very big deal!

I like all aspects of this hobby from building to figuring out 2 stroke motors to covering and finally there is flying. I believe I like it so well because it has so many different disciplines. Basically it is how I let off steam after work. I needed something that was intellectually stimulating yet at the same time could be relaxing and I've found it in RC Airplanes. I'm hooked.
